Serves as the conclusion to Jesus’ comments concerning the coming of the Son of Man.

Transfiguration
Mark 9:2-8
- Most commentator view Mark’s record of the transfiguration experience as a preview for the three disciples of the exalted Son of Man
- Most view the continuity between Jesus, Elijah (Prophets) and Moses (Law)
- There is also continuity in the fact that all experience rejection.
- Jesus explains the paradox regarding who He is and the then current expectations of the Messiah.
- The Son of Man is identified as the One who will suffer and the one who is to be exalted.
- God’s approval of Jesus mission in Mark 9:7 suggest that the work of the cross (Luke 9.31) was intimately tied to God’s work through the ages in the two great religious traditions
Priest and Prophet
- Jesus is revealed as the culmination

Ultimately, the focus was upon Jesus only (V.8)
Jesus commanded the three disciples to tell nothing of what they had seen (V.9)

Mark 9.33-37
- In Capernaum, the disciples were in a tense exchange regarding position.
- Capernaum was the center or “hub” of Jesus’ ministry in the Galilee region (Matthew 4.13-14)
- There was debate over who was to be the greater, or greatest in Christ’s kingdom
Who is the Greatest?
- Mark 9.33-37 is viewed as a key passage in the gospel because of the emphasis upon service.
- Jesus is seen as the servant-leader in Mark’s gospel
- The “first” in Christ’s kingdom is one who had no selfish ambitions but desire to become a servant; to cast aside pride

The message on the Messenger

- God’s plan was at work, as evidenced by they prophetic quotations in Malachi 3.1 and Isaiah 40.3
- John was a “forerunner” who was the subject of prophecy and is considered the last of the great prophets.

Matthew 3.7-10; Luke 3.7-14
- John the Baptist was a road builder who prepared the way of the Lord.
- John the Baptist was and ax man who got to the root of sin and exposed it.
- John the Baptist practices water baptism of repentance.
- John the Baptist preached the forgiveness of sins.

- John the Baptist painted a picture of a suffering servant.
- John the Baptist painted a picture of Jesus’ coming representing judgment/salvation
Jesus and His Preaching

- Jesus’ main ministry was teaching and preaching
- His forums were synagogues, marketplaces and the lakeshore.
- *He placed a heavy emphasis upon prayer and not allow the demands of His work to take away from the time alone with God *

- Jesus prayed alone; if Jesus need to start His day with God, so should His followers.
- Mark 1.38-39
- Healing provided Jesus the opportunity to preach; preaching was a major means of revealing God’s salvation plan to the world.
- Jesus moved beyond the focus of teaching/preaching to minister to the physical needs of the people.
- Jesus’ teaching on preaching ministry of compassion was a natural Sequel from the passion on conviction found in the preaching of John the Baptist.
Jesus and John the Baptist provide excellent examples of preaching and proclamation.
John preached with conviction.
Jesus preached with compassion.
We are challenged to be preachers of Conviction and Compassion.
