A Dumpster diver once found a stack of overrun CD-ROMs behind our manufacturer’s facility.  He started selling these beta copies of our software product for a fraction of their retail price on the internet.  He refused to stop when we contacted him.

The suggested plan of action around our office ranged from a lawsuit to refusing to support customers who purchased these CDs to seeking compensation from the manufacturer.  Anger was consuming us, and our plotting threatened to take even more time and resources.  When we stopped and thought about how few disks he had to sell and that they represented less than 0.1% of our business, we realized that the winning move was to ignore him.  We even offered to deduct what customers had paid him when they ordered our legitimate and updated version, turning his stolen-goods sale into hundreds of happy new customers for us.
