A/V Jesus Enters Jerusalem
Today is Palm Sunday – where we celebrate Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem
We can learn many principles of living our lives in this story.
1/ Always celebrate that we are born again : Jesus entering our lives
Celebrate Jesus entering our lives
A/V A young donkey
Mark 11: 1-7 As Jesus and his disciples approached Jerusalem, they came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of them on ahead.
2 “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As soon as you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
3 If anyone asks, ‘What are you doing?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it and will return it soon.’”
4 The two disciples left and found the colt standing in the street, tied outside the front door.
5 As they were untying it, some bystanders demanded, “What are you doing, untying that colt?”
6 They said what Jesus had told them to say, and they were permitted to take it.
7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it, and he sat on it.
Jesus sent two disciples ahead ... to get the young donkey ...
Jesus knew that the young donkey would be there – prophetic
But he also knew that people would question what the two disciples were doing
2/ People will always question you – be bold and answer
The Lord needs it and will return it soon
A/V Other spread leafy branches
Mark 11:8-9a Many in the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him,
and others spread leafy branches they had cut in the fields.
9 Jesus was in the centre of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting,
Others spread leafy branches they had cut
Matthew 21: Cut branches from trees and spread them on the road
Jesus was in the centre of the procession ...
Others were shouting ....
A/V Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord
Mark 11:9b-10 “Praise God! Hosanna
Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
10 Blessings on the coming Kingdom of our ancestor David!
Praise God in highest heaven!”
Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord
3/ Praise God : Shout it out : Hosanna
A/V Uproar !!
Matthew 21:10 The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered.
“Who is this?” they asked.
11 And the crowds replied, “It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered
“Who is this ?
It’s Jesus the prophet
So what had this prophet Jesus done to cause such a disturbance / uproar in the city
This is nothing new to Jesus – just after he had been born – 3 wise men came looking for him
Causing deep disturbance with everyone in Jerusalem
People will always ask you – who is helping you ? – how do you know that ?
4/ Proclaim His name when asked who is this !
A/V Mary anoints Jesus
A week before the Palm Sunday procession Jesus was at dinner at Mary, Martha and Lazarus’ house
John 12:3 Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair.
The house was filled with the fragrance.
Then Mary took a very expensive jar of perfumed cream and anointed Jesus
Judas – the man who would betray Jesus complained at the cost of the perfume
John 12:7 -8 Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial.
8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
Leave her alone
5/ Pay homage to the Lord
A/V They flocked to see him
John 12:9 When all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him
and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.
As they heard of the news that Jesus was coming, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.
John 12:12 The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet him.
John 12:17-18 Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it. That was the reason so many went out to meet him—because they had heard about this miraculous sign.
6/ Press in to see the miracles of Jesus in your life
Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb
... so who was this Lazarus
A/V “Lazarus come forth”
Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha, he became sick and they called for Jesus to come
However Lazarus died some days before Jesus got there ..
John 11:38 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.
39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested,
“Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”
41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.”
Here we have a man who has been dead for four days : they have wrapped him in bandages and put him in a cave – a tomb – with a stone over it
Jesus arrives – tells them to roll the stone away – and speaks out
43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come forth!”
Lazarus come Forth
44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”
7/ Push off the wrappings that bind you
A/V Let the Stones Cry Out
Luke 19:37 all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along,
praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.
38 “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”
39 But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said,
“Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”
40 He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!”
The name of Jesus is the name above all other names : The religious leaders wanted the people to be quiet- too much praise here – someone might hear. Sound familiar
Jesus says : the very stones and rocks would cry out !!
Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord
8/ Proudly praise the name of Jesus in your life
A/V Things won’t be the same
When Jesus entered Jerusalem : things would never the same again – yes he was going to be crucified – but before then : He wanted the temple clean..
Luke 19:45 Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out
the people selling animals for sacrifices.
When Jesus entered the Temple he looked at the money lenders and salesmen selling animals for sacrifice – overcharging for them ... he drove them out
When Jesus enters your life – he wants to drive out the unclean rubbish – unscrupulous practices
Luke 19:46 He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.”
My Temple will be a house of prayer
9/ Present yourself free of rubbish – but full of prayer
A/V Put your trust in the Light
Jesus entered Jerusalem on a young donkey – the crowd had already heard of his miracles – like raising Lazarus – Mary anointed with oil not knowing he would be crucified within the week.
The very crowd that praised him with palm leaves – would shout out crucify him – he would die!
We know that he rose again from His tomb – we will celebrate that on Resurrection Sunday
Meanwhile let us make certain we have put our trust in Him
John 12:36 Put your trust in the light while there is still time;
then you will become children of the light
10/ Put your trust in the light of Jesus
