Prayer is a primary emphasis of the Church. In Acts they continued daily among other things, "in prayer"
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Problems We Face In Prayer
We don’t know how to pray.
Dull, uninterested in prayer; weak in praying
Vague generalities,
Misunderstanding of God
Fleshly Lusts (Self-centered praying)
We need to avoid vague generalities as we pray by focusing on specific topics. This often leads to vain repetitions. D. Gunderson
So ultimately we need to be taught to pray!
The “Lord's Prayer” is the specific intentional passage to teach us how to pray. The whole Bible serves this purpose, but this passage specifically has this intent. This example is not meant to be recited, but to be an example to teach us how to pray; give us what to focus on, and what prayers are pleasing to God. This is how we energize our prayer life.
This text gives us a model of how to pray.

The texts gives us a model of how to pray.
The Glory of God comes first in my praying! The priority of my prayers
The Glory of God is the lens through which I petition for needs.

Praying with an Understanding of Who God Is
Praying with an Understanding of Who God Is
We address him as Father in heaving, meaning we are to pray understanding who God is.
The woman at the well was an example of this.
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
She would have prayed differently if she knew who he was.
Father: That he is compassionate and caring.
As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
In Heaven: Sovereign and reigning
and said, “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you.
Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.
Hallowed Be Your Name
Hallowed Be Your Name
“That God would be treated with the highest honor and set apart as holy.” ESVSB
It means to reverence His name.
for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
Name: meaning his Character, his person.
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
Rev.
So God is alone worthy of Highest reverence.
This is also why he acts in Scripture.
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.

This is a Chief motivator for God, the Glory of His great name!!
“if you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” John 14:14
Your Kingdom Come
Your Kingdom Come
And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,
Col. 1:
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,
The Spread of God’s domain in the hearts of men and completely in his physical return.
Your Will Be Done
Your Will Be Done
On Earth as in Heaven, completely and fully.
His revealed will, his Word. That people would become obedient to God’s word fully.
ent to God’s word fully.
Praying for the Glory of God
I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
This is the Purpose of Missions
The Key of Effective Prayer
The Key of Effective Prayer
That God's name would be hallowed, his kingdom spread, and his will obeyed.
Aligning ourselves with the purposes of God.
“You have no right to ask God anything, if God’s glory is not your chief motivation.”
This is why God doesn’t hear the prayer of the unsaved. He hears, and he has a loving disposition, but their hearts have impure goals and ultimately don’t seek his Glory.
The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
This is the Purpose of Missions

This is how we Pray for everything.
The Lens Through Which We Bring Needs
The Lens Through Which We Bring Needs
God's glory is the basis for asking for needs.
These are brought also in a community context
We identify in community. Vs. 11, 12, 13
Us, us, us.
We pray for the needs of the community because the Glory of God is on the line. Provision, so that we might honor his name. A Spirit of humility and forgiveness so that God might be glorified. Holiness together so that God might be glorified.
Praying for Needs
Praying for Needs
vs. 11: Give us Daily Bread
It's okay to pray for our needs, but only with the Glory of God as the root.
Not as if comfort were the goal of our heart. Comfort is not the goal of the Christian, ease and success are not the goals of Christians, God’s glory is.
We pray for needs ultimately for the glory of God.
Give me this day, daily bread so that through me your glory may spread throughout the world. Bless me, so your glory might reign.
God bless me so that I can be faithful and more generous to the advancement of the Gospel in the world.
May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, Selah that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.
Bless us so that the nations might know you. That doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy God’s material blessings but they are not the ultimate goal of our hearts.
? Bless us so that the nations might know you.
Bless brother… so his business may flourish and he can give more to missions. God, make a few faithful brothers in our Church millionaires so they can give and we can be more faithful in preaching the Gospel around the world.
Not every Christian is called to be a Foreign Missionary, but every Christian is called to be a Missionary in his Prayer Closet.
God's name, his kingdom, his will are our priorities of life and Prayer.
Why we often Get this wrong??
Why we often Get this wrong??
Do we not indict ourselves when we pray otherwise. Focusing on health, wealth, and comfort. Showing our hearts are not aligned with God's.
One of the reasons we don't know how to pray is that we are obssessed with things that are not important. We hate to be sick, we hate to have a hard time, Lord let us live long. We are as a culture not content with God's dealings with our lives, and then it's no wonder that when we pray it's vague and generally self-focused. Our prayers often manifest that we don't trust God.
Don't consume yourself with the things of this life and allow spiritual priorities to go to the fringe.
God free us by the power of the Gospel and the promises of Christ to forget our health, wealth, comfort and in a word ourselves, and to be consumed with the fame of His name!
We Often Pray for Missionaries in the same way. Lord, keep them safe.
What is the primary concern in missionaries going to the foreign field, safety??? Why do we pray for that then almost automatically. We should rather pray for the advancement of the Gospel whatever the cost. That the Gospel would spread to the nations and that God would empower men with courage to be willing to pay whatever cost necessary to make that happen.

Church Prayers
Unity, Holiness, Growth as a Church.
Focusing on the needs of us together more than the individual needs.
Don't consume yourself with the things of this life and allow spiritual priorities to go to the fringe.
