The climax of Christ’s work is that he is made Lord over all things in heaven and on earth.
Philippians
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
What’s that mean?
Lord?
What’s going on guys, thank you for showing up to week two of No Other Name.
This is an important series as we prepare ourselves for Easter and celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior.
Before we dig in I would like to set this message up by talking about the word “Lord,” and what it means.
There’s a crazy scene in the Bible that triggers the response I’m hoping we can navigate through tonight and here it is.
In your Bibles, turn to
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
Wow. This is crazy. 2 facts I’d like to pull out of this passage that help us understand the word “Lord.”
Lord means
The first is this...
He’s in control of the living and the dead.
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,
Matthew 27:
Curtain torn from top to bottom
Earth shook, rocks split
Tombs opened
No other historical information about this event has been found, but it is natural to suppose that if they had resurrection bodies, they would not have died again. They may have been taken up to heaven at or after Jesus’ ascension

The second is this...
He’s in control of the heavens and the Earth.
54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
Matthew 27:
Jesus’ name is different. Jesus’ name combines the greatest qualities together under one person. They are Author, First, and Leader. His name means that we can find all that we need in this to understand
The centurion and his guards were accustomed to seeing crucifixions, but these cataclysmic events, coupled with the extraordinary self-control, purity, and love shown by Jesus in his death, made the centurion realize that Jesus was the Son of God.

Truly this was the Son of God. Although they may not have understand fully the phrase they used, these Gentile soldiers make an appropriate confession of Jesus’ identity, as Simon Peter did on behalf of the rest of the apostles (16:16 and note; see 3:17; 17:5), while the natural heirs of the covenant are deriding their Messiah.

What’s this mean for us today?
