Introduction

I.

The impact of False Teachers (1-3)

Now it becomes evident why they needed to be reminded of the importance of a godly life, why they needed to reminded of the certainty of Jesus future coming, why they needed to be exhorted to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

False teachers had arose among the people, secretly bringing in destructive heresies.

So chapter one is not just an abstract thesis on Christian growth, this is necessary!

The danger of false teachers is real, the danger of being led astray is real.

Peter is urgently responding to the threat that was upon the church.

Of course we are told in other places that this is one of the dangers within the church

False teaching can come from without or it can come from within the church.

Jude it seems to come from without

But here the false teachers seem to be rising from within

Paul also warned of this

Peter concluded the first chapter by emphasizing that his readers should pay heed to the prophetic word as their source of illumination and teaching.

The Holy Scriptures should be trusted as the light that leads us in the way of truth.

As important as prophets and teachers are in the church to led God’s people in the way of truth with the Word of God Peter makes it clear that not all prophets were from God and not all teachers are from God.

In the OT the Scriptures warn against false prophets again and again.
