Introduction: During the time of what we know as Passion Week (the root is the Greek verb pascho, “to suffer”) Jesus’ travels has come to an end and as He approaches the city of Jerusalem, He wept for the people because He knows that the same people cheering for Him will ultimately send Him to the Cross.
I. Jesus showing His royal power and promised Messiah.
II. Jesus knows that judgement will come upon Jerusalem.
III. Will you recognize that Jesus is the true Messiah?
A. There will be a time when you will meet Jesus for Judgment.
1. Verse 34-“The Lord needs it” Jesus tells two disciples to go and get a donkey that is tied up from a village up ahead.
a. Imagine for a second what the disciples thought will the owners know who Jesus is?
b. Were they scared to ask? Did they have enough faith to trust Jesus and build up the courage to ask for the Donkey. (Jesus divine knowledge-Jesus knew someone was going to ask )
2. Verse 35-“As he was going along, they were spreading their clothes on the road.” The Jewish tradition of spreading clothing out to announce a king.
3. Verse 38- “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you. “ Luke only echoes but both Matthew and John quote the prediction of the Messiah and the ride that symbolized Jesus’ coming victory over sin.
a. The people of Jerusalem wanted someone to take out their Roman oppressors. They wanted a military leader who would over throw the Roman Government. Instead they got a king on a donkey who comes to bring peace and salvation.
4. Verse 39-40-The Pharisees have a problem with the disciples. The disciples are expressing what is ultimately and finally true; God will provide a witness even if they were kept silent the truth will come out. All life is formed from God.
a. Opposition to Christian witness cannot be stopped and will not be silenced. This is the Power of our promised Messiah.
