Eliot put it this way:  “We are always putting on a face to meet the faces we meet.”

Isn’t that part of our dilemma?  The tension that we live with an awful lot, live between the fear of being found out …all that stuff that’s really in us and that aching desire to be known….to be truly known.

There is something deep in the heart of our faith about being known, fully known.  So I think when Burton asked his question:  “If you knew me would you love me?” it’s Jesus who answers “Yes!  By all means, yes.”  The one who knows all and sees all, is also the one who forgives all.  And we know that in this text, because towards the end of the conversation when the woman has gone into all this conversation about “when the Messiah gets here,”   “When the Messiah gets here, He will explain everything to us.”   “When the Messiah gets here,  everything will be clear.”
