Introduction: Open Bibles and read I Peter 4:7-11 Reminder of One another series and how the Scriptures help us to know how to function as the body of Christ.
Today we are going to overview this text with some observations.
And then focus most of our time unpacking the instruction to serve one another.
God’ plan: is coming to culmination
God’s people: are instructed
God’s grace: is source of gifts to serve one another
God’s word: is what we speak
God’s strength: is how we serve
God’s glory: is why we serve
Interpretation: Since God has a plan to bring an end to all things, God’s people should head the instruction to; pray with self-controlled and sober minds, keep loving one another earnestly, show one another hospitality without grumbling, and serve one another, all for the purpose of God’s glory.
Serve one another
As each has received a gift
uniqueness of individual gifts (see I Cor 12)
Illustration: Physical body.
Each part is unique but every part together is what makes up the body.
Each member has unique giftedness but all of us doing our part makes up the body of Christ and accomplishes our mission to glorify God and make disciples.
Use your gift to serve one another.
What are some examples of practical ways we can serve one another?
Counseling one another, seeing someone sitting alone and befriending them, hearing about someone having hard week so taking them a meal, cleaning someones house, washing their car, taking them grocery shopping, taking to Dr. appointment, free baby sitting, helping someone at their work during a busy season, cleaning up a yard, etc.
As good stewards of God’s grace which is the source of gifts, noticing the two main categories that we could place all of our gifts.
Speaking gifts: God’s word
Serving gifts: God’s strength.
Example: Last evening the folks who were serving parents by watching our children while we went out on dates.
You needed God’s strength to accomplish that!
Transition: This instruction is to every member of the body of Christ.
Because of our position in Christ we are all called upon to serve one another.
This does not diminish the two major responsibilities or positions that Christ has given the church namely that of Elders and deacons.
Rather it reinforces those roles and includes the whole body in that act of serving one another.
And finally notice the purpose for which our service is to be accomplished...
3.
In order that in everything God is glorified
Transition: Since the end of all things is at hand.
How will we use the gifts God has given us by his strength and for His glory?
What is required of us to fulfill this mandate to the church?
Closing: Being aware and notice others needs.
Being concerned about others interest ahead of my own.
Being sacrificial.
Being intentional.
Being humble.
