The Deliberate Triumphal Entry

21 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, 2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. 3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. 4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. 6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, 7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. 8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. 9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. 10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? 11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

INTRODUCTION
Jesus began the last week of his life. He had spent the night before (the Sabath Evening) in Bethany with Lazarus, Mary and Martha (jn 12:1f). He was now getting ready to demonstrate that he was the Messiah, the one prophesied to be the Savior of the world he is to deliberately going to fulfil his prophecy
1. HE DELIBERATELY BEGAN HIS LAST WEEK IN JERUSALEM (21:1)
a. In Suburb of Bethphage
Means house of figs
In the Suburbs of Jerusalem
Lying towards the Mount of Olives
Jesus Arrived by foot - Jesus had no means of transportation other than his 2 feet that God has blessed him with.
b. Sent 2 disciples on a special mission:
- He borrowed from another man
c. One of 3 things happened that allowed this man too let Jesus borrow his Donkey
the man was a Disciple who would allow the Lord to borrow his animals, The Emphasis on, “ the Lord has need of them” can point that he may have known about he situation; or
The Man may have made previous arrangements to borrow the animals
The best one is, The Lord was demonstration his divine Omniscience to Validate his claim as the Messiah
2. HE DELIBERATELY FULFILLED PROPHECY (21:2-5)
a. The disciples special mission: To secure a donkey and her colt
- He borrowed the colts from another man
The best one is, The Lord was demonstration his divine Omniscience to Validate his claim as the Messiah
b. The point: A deliberate fulfilment of prophecy - a picture of
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion;
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem:
Behold, thy King cometh unto thee:
He is just, and having salvation;
Lowly, and riding upon an ass,
And upon a colt the foal of an ass
Ass-Colt: In Ancient days , the colt was a noble animal, it was a service animal to help men with their heavy loads that they had to bare. it was used to take the heavy burdens off of man.
What did the prophecy say:
1.
to warn Jerusalem; why were they suppose to warn Jerusalem? Because He wasn’t coming the way they expected him.
The King cometh unto thee; this was the first warning He was coming as they expected. they were right about this part, he was coming.
He comes gently, he was coming meek. this was the second warning. The Messiah was coming meekly, not as a Reigning Monarch, he was coming to win heart and lives, spiritually and eternally, not physically and materially.
He comes upon an Ass (Donkey) and a colt. The Messiah was not coming as a conqueror, riding on a white stallion, ut as a King of Peace, riding on a Donkey. He was coming to save the world through Love, not hate retaliation and war.
Christ didn't come to execute justice, but to save men spiritually through the forgiveness of sin.Christ didn't come to judge men for their ignoring, neglecting, rejecting and misinterpreting God; but He came as a messenger of Peace to reconcile men to God, by the cross
3. HE DELIBERATELY RECEIVED HOMAGE OF THE DISCIPLES (21:6-7)
a. They did as He requested: they gave Homage to God ( reverance and recognition)
The disciples did exactly what he said, despite the uncertainty.
We are to give Homage to the lord by obeying his commands
If you keep my commandments, yo will abide in my love (jn 15:10)
b. They used their own clothes for a saddle: The Disciples lived a life of poverty following Jesus, so the used all the had to care for the comfort of our Saviour, they put their, dusty dirty, smelly garment on the Donkey, as another sign of reverence for our Messiah
4. HE DELIBERATELY RECEIVED HOMAGE OF THE PEOPLE (21:8-9)
What had happened was? It was a very great crowd. John, said that the world had gone after him
he people probably gathered early n the morning so, see this man from Galilee, who had just raised Lazarus from the dead.
I am lead to believe that thousands of people, lined to see this man that was able to open blinded eye, and cleanse men of their leprosy
a
a. Many received him as King: spread cloaks and branches before him:
They threw their cloak on the road and tore branches down to lay before the King
They cried “Hosanna Hosanna” which means “Save now or save we pray”
see what the people actually wanted, was Jesus to save them from the Romans, now. they weren't thinking spiritually and eternally. the wanted Jesus to bring Judgement to the Roman empire.
b. Many received him as Messiah:
As Son of David
As the Lord
As the highest
As the Highest
5. HE DELIBERATELY STIRRED THE PEOPLE TO ASK THE KEY QUESTION OF LIFE. (21:10-11)
a. Question: Who is this?
The Roman sensed that a popular uprising might be in the making
The Herodians, whi were the Jewish ruling party, feared, they would be overthrown
The Pharisees were stirred to new depths of envy and malice
The common people were convinced that their day of Liberation had finally arrive in Jesus of Nazareth
b. Answer: Jesus the prophet of Nazareth!
