INTRODUCTION

Who am I (what I do, CCBC, short testimony)
The study of the nature and purpose of the church is called “ecclesiology”.
The study of the nature and purpose of the church is called “ecclesiology”. Ecclesiology comes from the Greek word, “ἐκκλησία” which means assembly, and where we get the word “church from”. When studying “ecclesiology” it is easy to fall into doctrines and interpretations. There are over 32,000 Christian denominations in the five major groupings of Christianity (Independents (about 22000), Protestants (about 9000), Orthodox (781), Roman Catholics (242), and Anglicans (168)). Unfortunately most of these denominations were founded because some disagreed with what was taught, while scripture says, In “8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. 9“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” When someone disagrees they may start a new church or they may attend another church where they agree with the teaching. So many churches get started over views of ecclesiology, eschatology, and many other doctrines, and theology

My goal to cover many topics and to peek your curiosity to continue your own studies.
Read my outline to everyone.

2 WARNINGS:
“I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” ().
Don’t make theology the priority
Jesus tells His disciples that He is going to build a church, and it’s going to be powerful.
Without Christ rising from the dead there would be no church.
Once Christ died, the prime use for Israel is over, but not His love and promises.
The main reason for Israel was to bring Christ into the world, to save the world. Once Christ died, salvation became available for the entire world.
As God used the 12 tribes to build Israel God used the 12 disciples to build his church.
In Acts we read that God establishes the church to spread the gospel, and to make disciples.
The gospel was spreading and the church was growing.
God used Philip to spread Gospel to Samaria and beyond
Then God used Paul and Barnabas on the their first journey to go to the Jews, then to the gentiles, then to Iconium, then to Lystra, that is wear Paul was stoned and left for dead.
Then God used Paul’s second missionary journey, with young Timothy and they went to the Church’s from his first journey, to give them strength and they met the Bereans on that same journey.
On Paul’s third missionary journey he went to strengthen the disciples. and he went to all of Asia. Then Paul was put under house arrest.
The Word spread far and wide, saving, and then sanctifying. Seems like another prophecy came true.
Today we will that not every Christian hold the same views...
I have seen many people in our church who have accepted Jesus or rededicated their life here and grew into an amazing lover of God but because they read a few books from some scholars that they have gone to other churches or no church and they have put down this church.
To me it is sad because when you talk to them know there is a sense of aggression, and bitterness to the church that provided to them the gospel and got them excited about Jesus.
These classes and this class specifically is dangerous because all it takes is to read some book and you become convinced of some other view.
says knowledge puffs up but love edifies.. when you study the Bible there is a wrong and a right way… if your knowledge puffs you while you think your helping others your only causing division and hurting others.
As we learn of other Christians we will learn different views… but we must remember Jesus command to all Christians:
John 13:35 NKJV
35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
I know people from all kinds of denominations and church backgrounds… although I may disagree in some views I love them because they love Jesus.
Disagreement is an earthly thing… in Heaven we will all be one church in agreement and unity!
Our focus should not be set on our disagreements but on our agreements.... however it is good for us to be aware of the disagreements .. so we are aware… but if the person loves trusts Jesus to be their Savior they are a brother...
Humans have made things complicated with how the church is to be ran…
So in this class I will cover some of the main denominations out there and our disagreements with them… but we have to know that despite their denomination if they accepted Jesus as their Savior they are a brother…
At the end of the class I will cover
- A complicated and divisive theology is an earthly thing… no need to get caught up in it too much now!
Better to focus first on the Kingdom of God by obeying the commands Jesus has given to us, love God, others, each other, spread the gospel, make disciples, baptize, take communion, and wait for His return.
My goal is to not push much theology even my own and just give facts and scripture

KEY WORDS

KEY WORDS

Theology - the study of God
Doctrine - teachings, beliefs
Denominations - a church group that hold a particular view of the way the church is ran.
Reformer
A person who makes changes to something in order to improve it.
In Christianity it normally is a reference to someone who stood up against unbiblical practices of the catholic church in the protestant reformation.
Protestant - A member or follower of any of the Western Christian churches (not Orthodox or Roman Orthodox) that separated from the Roman Catholic Church
A a member or follower of any of the Western Christian churches that are separate from the Roman Catholic Church
Western Christian Churches - Basically not Orthodox or Roman Catholic -
Protestant Reformation -
The Protestant Reformation is generally considered to be Luther’s posting of his Ninety-five Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Church on October 31, 1517.
Basically the protestant reformation was a protest against the unbiblical practices of the catholic church.... the famous protestors/reformers were Martin Luther in Germany, Ulrich Zwingli in Switzerland, and John Calvin
basically it was using scripture to correct the catholic church.
Ordinance
Reformers such as Martin Luther in Germany, Ulrich Zwingli in Switzerland, and John Calvin in France protested various unbiblical practices of the Catholic Church and promoted a return to sound biblical doctrine.
Calvinist -
Calvinism is named for John Calvin, a French theologian who lived from 1509-1564
A theological view that believe in the five points of Calvinism can be summarized by the acronym TULIP:
T stands for total depravity, all humanity is dead in trespasses and sins. Man is unable to save himself (; ; ).
U for unconditional election, Because man is dead in sin, he is unable to initiate a response to God; so, in eternity past God elected certain people to salvation. Election and predestination are unconditional; they are not based on man’s response (;; , ) because man is unable to respond, nor does he want to.
L for limited atonement, Because God determined that certain ones should be saved as a result of God’s unconditional election, He determined that Christ should die for the elect alone. All whom God has elected and for whom Christ died will be saved (; ; ; ; ; ).
I for irresistible grace,- Those whom God elected He draws to Himself through irresistible grace. God makes man willing to come to Him. When God calls, man responds (, ; ).
P for perseverance of the saints.- The precise ones God has elected and drawn to Himself through the Holy Spirit will persevere in faith. None whom God has elected will be lost; they are eternally secure (; ; ).
Arminian
Arminianism is named for Jacobus Arminius, a Dutch theologian who lived from 1560-1609.
D: Diminished depravity – Humanity is depraved, but God uses grace to restore man’s ability to respond to Him. A: Abrogated election – God bases His election on His foreknowledge of those who freely choose Him. I: Impersonal atonement – Christ died for everyone, making salvation possible for everyone. S: Sedentary grace – God calls everyone to salvation, but many freely reject it. Y: Yieldable justification – The saved can fall from grace and lose their salvation.

10 MAJOR DENOMINATIONS

there is literally thousands of denominations, but most in some way branch from these 10… and these 10 are the most common we hear about.
10 MAJOR DENOMINATIONS
Orthodox (east)
Catholic Church / Roman Catholic (west)
Anglican (Arminian)
Methodists (Arminian)
Pentecostal (Arminian)
Lutherans (mix of both, most conservatives here are Calvinists)
Anabaptists
Presbyterians (Calvinist)
Congregationalists
Baptists (mostly Calvinist)
Adventists
ABOUT 10 MAJOR DENOMINATIONS
1. Orthodox (East)
The Orthodox Church claims to be the one true church of Christ, and seeks to trace its origin back to the original apostles through an unbroken chain of apostolic succession.
Orthodox thinkers debate the spiritual status of Roman Catholics and Protestants, and a few still consider them heretics.
Like Catholics and Protestants, Orthodox believers affirm the Trinity, the Bible as the Word of God, Jesus as God the Son, and many other biblical doctrines.
In doctrine, they have much more in common with Roman Catholics than they do with Protestant Christians.
Sadly, the doctrine of justification by faith is virtually absent from the history and theology of the Orthodox Church.
Rather, Orthodoxy emphasizes theosis (literally, “divinization”), the gradual process by which Christians become more and more like Christ. What many in the Orthodox tradition fail to understand is that “divinization” is the progressive result of salvation, not a requirement for salvation itself. Other Orthodox distinctives that are in conflict with the Bible include:

Other Orthodox distinctives that are in conflict with the Bible include:
The equal authority of church tradition and Scripture Discouragement of individuals interpreting the Bible apart from tradition The perpetual virginity of Mary Prayer for the dead Baptism of infants without reference to individual responsibility and faith The possibility of receiving salvation after death The possibility of losing salvation

2. Catholic Church (west)
Catholic Church (west) broke off from the Orthodox (east) church in 1054AD with an event called the Great Schism.
Because of cultural, political, social, and language differences it caused religious doctrine to be different which caused the seperation.
Catholics reject the doctrine of sola scriptura and do not believe that the Bible alone is sufficient.
We believe:
2 Timothy 3:16 NKJV
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
They believe that both the Bible and sacred Roman Catholic tradition are equally binding upon the Christian.
As a result many of Roman Catholics doctrines, such as purgatory, praying to the saints, worship or reverance of Mary, etc., have little or no basis in Scripture but are based solely on Roman Catholic traditions.

Another disagreement between Catholicism and Protestantism is over the office and authority of the Pope.
Another disagreement between Catholicism and Protestantism is over the office and authority of the Pope. According to Catholicism the Pope is the “Vicar of Christ” (a vicar is a substitute) and represents Jesus as the head of the Church. As such, the Pope has the ability to speak ex cathedra (with authority on matters of faith and practice), making his teachings infallible and binding upon all Christians. On the other hand, Protestants believe that no human being is infallible and that Christ alone is the Head of the Church.

On the other hand, Protestants believe that no human being is infallible and that Christ alone is the Head of the Church.
We protestants believe that Christ alone is the Head of the Church.
Another difference between Catholicism and Protestantism is how one is saved.
Catholics teach that the Christian must rely on faith plus “meritorious works” in order to be saved.
Essential to the Roman Catholic doctrine of salvation are the Seven Sacraments, which are baptism, confirmation (HS out pour), the Eucharist (Lord supper), penance (repentance) , anointing of the sick, holy orders (power and grace to serve), and matrimony (marriage)
We believe that by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone we are saved ().
Another major major difference between Catholics and Protestants has to do with what happens after death.
Both believe that unbelievers will spend eternity in hell, but there are significant differences about what happens to believers.
From their church traditions and their reliance on non-canonical books, the Catholics have developed the doctrine of purgatory. Purgatory, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, is a “place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God’s grace, are not entirely free from venial faults (sins that is not depriving), or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.”
We believe that when we die, we will go straight to heaven to be in the presence of the Lord ( and ).
A very disturbing aspect about the Catholic doctrine of purgatory is the belief that man can and must pay for his own sins.
This results in a low view of the sufficiency and efficiency of Christ’s atonement on the cross.
Simply put, the Roman Catholic view of salvation implies that Christ’s atonement on the cross was insufficient payment for the sins of those who believe in Him and that even a believer must pay for his own sins, either through acts of penance or time in purgatory.
However the Bible teaches that it is Christ’s death alone satisfies or propitiate God’s wrath against sinners (; ; ; ).
3. Anglican (episcopal) (Armenian)
broke off from catholic church in 1534.
it started by King Henry being denied to divorced his wife by the pope and so King Henry figuring a way to get authority over the catholic church.
This denomination says that they are Protestant and catholic.
There doctrine is a mix of Catholicism and protestant reformation theology.
Interestingly, the church does not require individuals to agree with or accept all the statements of their beliefs but encourages its members to join in the process of discovery.
However their church service reflect a lot of the catholic traditional type services… and so many can be confused in thinking they are justified by religion and not by grace.
Methodists
4. Methodists (Armenian)
The United Methodist Church is the largest American mainline denomination, with nearly 12 million members in 42,000 congregations worldwide
Broke off from the Anglican church in 1738
The United Methodist Church is the largest American mainline denomination, with nearly 12 million members in 42,000 congregations worldwide
Doctrinally Methodists are concerned with personal holiness and emphasize the need for an experience of salvation.
Today there is a liberal movement within the church to grant full communion to practicing homosexuals and even to ordain homosexual marriage.... however those in the denomination say that if they do allow that the whole Methodist denomination will be split up.
Also belief in the inerrancy of Scripture is low among Methodists, although they affirm the authority of the Bible
Methodist churches include:
The Church of the Nazarene (1908)
Christian and Missionary Alliances (1887)
Salvation Army (1880)
African Methodist Episcopal (1814)
5. Pentecostal (mostly Armenian)
Broke off from the Methodists in 1901
Pentecostals teach three 3 major steps in the life of a believer: 1. Justification 2. Sanctification, and 3rd “Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Some of these Pentecostal churches emphasize more then other on the importance of speaking in tongues and other signs from Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
The danger of some Pentecostal churches is to trump scriptural teaching to attempt to conform Scripture to what they “know by experience.”
however teaches us that our experiences should not trump scripture.
Matthew 7:22–23 NKJV
22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
2 Peter 1:19 NLT
19 Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.
2 Peter 1:9 NKJV
9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
2 Peter 1:19
Churches include:
Church of God (1897)
Pentecostal Assemblies (1907)
Assemblies of God (1914)
Foursquare Gospel (1927)
Charismatic Churches broke off from Pentecostal in 1965 with Calvary Chapel then 1983 with Vineyard Ministries.
6. Lutherans (mix of both, most conservatives here are Calvinists)
Broke off from the Catholic Church in 1517 with the Protestant Reformation
There is a lot of different types of Lutheran churches but they all base their practices and teachings on Martin Luther to some degree.
Which is interesting because Luther had no intention of starting a new church, but only wanted to correct what he saw as violations of clear biblical teaching.
The Lutheran church teaches that all men have some measure of freedom of the will—
which is ironic considering Luther comes to the opposite conclusion in one of his most famous books, The Bondage of the Will.
Lutherans also believe that, without God’s grace, given by the Holy Spirit, man is incapable of fearing or believing in God.
In Lutheran services you can see many of the ceremonies and rituals of the Catholic Church with modifications to reflect their doctrines.
Churches that came from a Lutheran background are
Evangelical Covenant(1885) (historically lutheran)
Evangelical Free (1950) (congregationalist)
7. Anabaptists
Ana Baptist Literally means “one who is baptized again” - because they refused to follow the catholic church in infant baptism
Kinda always have been around sort of kinda
They don’t really have a building or organization
They refused to join the rest of the church in 250AD to follow the hierarchy of Bishops and the pope
After the protestant reformation they kinda mixed in mainly with the Baptists.
Churches from the Anabaptist movement are:
Churches are:
Mennonite (1537)
1530 Hutterite
1693 Amish
8. Presbyterians (Calvinist)
Presbyterians
Branched from Catholic church and out of the Protestant Reformation in 1536
They are the Reformers and Calvinists we hear about.
The Presbyterian Church was first organized in Scotland under the leadership of the Reformer John Knox.
Presbyterian church are ran uniquely:
The congregation elects elders called a session that will govern the church and make decisions, and hire pastors
While most Presbyterian churches will agree on general themes such as the depravity of man, the holiness of God, and salvation by faith, but there is diversity on how they define and apply those things
Some churches treat sin as like a disease and pretty much remove any personal responsibility, while others hold a firm line that sin is a violation of God’s unchanging law.
Some Presbyterian churches teach that the Bible is the verbally inspired, infallible Word of God, while others teach that it is a human book subject to error.
Some Presbyterians believe Jesus is the virgin-born Son of God, and others deny His divine nature.
When seeking out a Presbyterian church, a person would be well advised to carefully examine the church’s formal statements of doctrine and the practical implementation of that doctrine.
Any church worthy of the label “church” must conform to Scripture as its ultimate authority ().
1 Thessalonians 5:21 NKJV
21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.
9. Baptists (mostly Calvinist but there are Arminists)
The origin of the Baptists is very old since there connection with the Anabaptists
Baptists and Presbyterians tend to bicker at each other.
Baptist churches are very complicated because there is First Baptist, Second Baptist, American Baptist, Southern Baptist, General Baptist, Independent Baptist, Primitive Baptist – the list goes on and on.... and so do what they practice between each other
the baptist denomination has sub-denominations within
The Baptist church believes in Baptism only after a person has professed Christ as their Savior and that Baptism symbolizes the cleansing of sins.
Baptists tend to be very big on biblical authority
he Baptism symbolizes the cleansing of sins.
Baptists are also big on evangelism and missionary work (Famous Baptist evangelist is Billy Graham)
As with any other church, the name isn't as important as what is taught within.
As we examine any church, we would do well to follow the example of the Berean believers in , who “searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (KJV).
10. Congregationalists
While the Anglican “Episcopal” church government is ruled by bishops, and the “presbyterian” church government is ruled by elders, the “congregational” church government is ruled by the congregation.
Congregational government is found in many Baptist, some Methodist and non-denominational churches.
Congregational churches recognize the sovereignty of Christ over His Church and make that a touchstone of their faith.
Congregational government nearly always avoids such hierarchy, maintaining that the local church is answerable directly to God, not some man or organization.
Congregational government nearly always avoids such hierarchy, maintaining that the local church is answerable directly to God, not some man or organization.
What some congregational churches fail to recognize is the duty that all believers have to correct and instruct one another.
In , the believers were commanded to withdraw themselves from “to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.”
In , (NKJV), we are told “If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness...from such withdraw yourself.”
In Paul's letter to the Galatians, we find repeated references to correcting or withdrawing from those who teach or practice falsehood (, ; ; ).
God's design for believers is that we would be conformed to the image of His Son () and that our fellowship be based on a unity of faith and practice ().
11. Churches of Christ
Branched from the Congregationalits church in 1801
Many Church of Christ churches are in fact solid, biblically based churches.
Some Churches of Christ that have an extreme over-emphasis on the absence of musical instruments,
Some claim to exclusive access to salvation,
Some have doctrine of salvation that is borderline (at best) works-based,
So there are definitely some Church of Christ churches that should not be attended / participated in.
This requires discernment on the part of a believer considering joining a Church of Christ church.
Adventists
Started in 1844
They mainly
SUMMARY
This was a lot… and there are way more!
The important thing is that the church holds to the essentials
As you can see here for the most part denominations because of non essential disagreements.
The essentials is the authority of God’s Word and we are saved through faith in Christ alone
The
Authority of God’s Word
Isaiah 40:8 NKJV
8 The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”
; ; ; ;
Salvation in Christ alone
Romans 3:22–23 NLT
22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. 23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Romans 3:22 NKJV
22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;
It is important to not let the enemy takes us the wrong direction by focusing on non-essentials.
I have dealt with a number of False Teachers and people deceived by them:
if your reading a book or hearing a teaching that seems to be more biblical and pressures you to leave a church that holds to the authority of scriptures and salvation alone in Jesus chances are there is another book or teaching that speaks to just the opposite.... be careful to what and who you listen to....
I have learned that the heart reveals a lot… when a person thinks they have found these answers to the way church should be ran or what the beliefs should be and they are prideful, arrogant, and demeaning that they will be swayed to another view and another and will be stuck in the bitterness and frustration.
Now I am not opposed to studying theology I think it is good, but I am opposed to division and arrogance that can so easily come.
Plus man’s theologies complicate so much of Christianity that is simply meant to be about love and sharing the gospel!
2 Corinthians 11:3 NKJV
3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

CONTRAST: ANTICHURCH LEADERSHIP: False Apostle/ False Teacher/False Prophets
In short:
A false Apostle is a person who will have a different command, or purpose for the church.
A false teacher is a person who will make a claim to some new insight from God or God’s Word,
A false prophet is someone that will claim to speak on behalf of God that is not.
Scripture primary warns us most about false teachers. That is because they are deceptive. They appear smart, they appear studied, they may even appear humble… but there is always pride, arrogance, and a hidden motive.
A key instruction gives to the leaders of the church is to discern and remove false teachers
Now I am not opposed to studying theology I think it is good, but I am opposed to division and arrogance that can so easily come.
I have learned that the heart reveals a lot… when a person thinks they have found answers to the way church should be ran or what the beliefs should be and they are prideful, arrogant, and demeaning chances are that they will be swayed to another view and another and will be stuck in the bitterness and frustration… because they will never get what they want from people… and so the false teachers heart shows it true colors.
So how can you protect yourself from false leadership? in 2 ways:
1. By examining God’s Word yourself
How should I respond to any doctrine taught?
Hebrews 13:7–9b NKJV
7 Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.
2. Examining their fruit.
Jesus said we can know a person by their fruit
Matthew 7:15–16 NKJV
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?
John 13:35 NKJV
35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The fruits of the spirit:
Galatians 5:22 NKJV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
I have learned that the heart reveals a lot… when a person thinks they have found answers to the way church should be ran or what the beliefs should be our red flags should go up and be ready to test their words and examine their actions:
Matthew 7:15–16 NKJV
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?
Matthew 7:15–20 NKJV
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
Matthew 7:15 NKJV
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

It always some
If a person claims to know a lot of scripture then they should be the one of the most humble, loving person you met!
The Bible has also put together a list of characteristics of a biblical leader (which I referenced earlier) ((, , ))
If not they have just puffed themselves with the little knowledge they do have.
In cripture I have seen
For myself I have created a guide based on the fruits of the spirit and biblical leadership qualifications.
I ask myself 6 questions about the person
A Test of a Leaders Fruit:
I ask myself 6 questions
1. Timothy was told to look at their marriage and relationship to their kids. ()
1 Timothy 3:5 NKJV
5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?);
How do they treat their spouse? What is their relationship to their kids and how do the kids act?
1 Thessalonians 5:12–22 NKJV
12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.
2. Scripture says to respect your church leadership ()
How does the person conduct himself to leadership in church?
How does he conduct himself to leadership in church?
3. Scripture says to be unified in doctrine ()
1 Corinthians 1:10 NKJV
10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
Does this person go behind church leadership back to discuss his observations instead of to the leadership?
4. Scripture says that a true leader has self-control, not violent and quarrelsome ()
1 Timothy 3:2–7 NKJV
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
Can this person control their emotions ?
5. Scripture says a teacher should be gentle and patient ()
Ephesians 4:2 NKJV
2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,
Does he or she communicate with grace and love or is there aggression in their tone, and a sense of I need to be right? and I know something you don’t know
A good teacher doesn't point a finger at someones lack of knowledge in something.
Because a good teacher knows that we are all growing, and the knowledge is not what is important it is the growing that is ()
6.Scripture says a leader is humble ()
Matthew 20:26 NKJV
26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.
Does the person serve you or does the person try to make you follow them?
A false teacher always is driven by pride, but a true leader knows his weakness and relies on God,
A false teachers refuses to seem wrong to others, they cant seem submissive to someone younger ()
Ephesians 5:21 NKJV
21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
They are always proving themselves with the appearance of spirituality whether it is how much they spend time with God or the verses they can quote.
Just because a person says a lot of spiritual things or a lot of verses does not make them right....
Check their verses to see if their right, and check their character
NOTE: a person can speak true doctrine in a wrong way.
Don’t judge doctrine based off of how someone says it (they may say it in a wrong way)
Judge doctrine for it says. Based off of its content. Then determine if it has the fruit of the Spirit.
Note these questions to ask are not some definite answer to a false teacher it is a guide
Personally I approach the character test like:
If fails at all of the character test then there is a big red flag.
If someone fails at most its a red flag and you should definitely be testing what they teach
If someone fails at some know that not everyone is not perfect and maybe it was a bad day or moment for the person…but keep watching.
If a person passes all of this that doesn't mean that he is all good to listen to… I know a false teacher who would pass all of the character tests from what you would see from the pulpit but they teach false teachings.

PURPOSE

All seen in Acts 2:
The nature of the church is seen in . It began in the Spirit (v.1-4), it preached the gospel and baptized all believers (v.5-41). It was devoted to apostles teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayers (v.42), It was in awe of the power of God (v.43), It was unified with love of others and God (v.44-47a). And it was grown by the Lord of those were being saved (v.48).

And it was grown by the Lord of those were being saved (v.48).
Despite how simple this is the purpose of the church is still very debated
Here people will mention sacraments, or ordinances.
Sacraments variey a lot throughout denomination
For the most part the majority of churches American hold to 2 ordinances of the church to being the purpose of church with the goal of spreading the gospel:
The Ordinances of the Church: Lord’s Supper and Baptism (will discuss later)
-The mission of the church
I would like to focus on to give us the main purpose of the church
The role of the church as a whole
Acts 2:42
Acts 2:42 NKJV
42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Apostles Doctrine
this would be teaching of God’s Word but is called the apostles doctrine because they didn't get to teach directly from the Word of God because in those day access to God’s Word was mainly by the synagogue
So the Apostles would teach about what Jesus had taught them through the Holy Spirit reminding them and teaching them.
John 14:26 NKJV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
The Apostles also would have taught on how Jesus fulfills the OT (which Jesus taught them - He came to fullfill - , road to Emmaus - ) these teaching are seen all over church history
It is no surprise that teaching of God’s Word is crucial:
“16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”.
However we should know that the key point is have a relationship with God. Don't have a relationship with teachings.
doctrine - the word “doctrine” is used 38 times
Fellowship
κοινωνία (koinaninia) - which means to be connected, or to share freely, “potluck” is probably the closest word to the original meaning of “κοινωνία”.
Fellowship can be understood by looking at the only 2 prepositions used in the NT for Fellowship.
These 2 prepositions point out the 2 forms of Christian Fellowship in scripture.
pass out handout
The first preposition speaks of our Fellowship with God.
The second preposition speaks of our fellowship with others.
irst preposition (with God) Eis - IntoWe learn that our fellowship is in Jesus “9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”Second preposition (with others) Epi - uponWe learn that our fellowship should be founded upon the Gospel.
First preposition (with God) Eis - Into
We learn that our fellowship is in Jesus
1 Corinthians 1:9 NKJV
9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
fellowship with God the Father
You can speak to Him. () but you are not with Him face to face ()
fellowship with Jesus
He intercedes for you ()but you are not with Him face to face (()
fellowship with Holy Spirit (; )
The Holy Spirit teaches us ()
The Holy Spirit gives us abilities to do will of God (;
Second preposition (with others) Epi - upon. We learn that our fellowship should be founded upon the Gospel.
Philippians 1:5 NKJV
5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now,
Fellowship with Others supposed to look like: Spirit led () so our relationships with others should resemble the fruits of the Spirit ()
It was important in the early days of the church to spend a lot of time together.
They would spend their time discussing the apostles teaching, encouraging each other, and challenging each other.
These 2 prepositions point out the 2 forms of Christian Fellowship in scripture. (use diagram you created)
The first preposition speaks of our Fellowship with God. The second preposition speaks of our fellowship with others.First preposition (with God) Eis - IntoWe learn that our fellowship is in Jesus “9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”Second preposition (with others) Epi - uponWe learn that our fellowship should be founded upon the Gospel.
Fellowship is also important to the Christian because we are not to be friends of the world (; ), but to be with people who are of the Light (,).
Fellowship is also important to the Christian because we are not to be friends of the world (; ), but to be with people who are of the Light (,).
This fellowship also allowed for the poorer members to eat or receive something they don’t have.
John, Acts: Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary, Volume 2 The Early Christian Experience and Practice (2:42–47)

It was important to these early believers to spend much time together. These hours would have been passed in discussing the apostles’ teaching, encouraging and challenging each other, and enjoying one another in the family bond that the Spirit created. This “fellowship” also extended to a tangible manifestation of love for one another that found expression in sharing with the poorer members of this new community.

Breaking of Bread
Breaking of bread is actually an expression that refers to both sharing meals, and a time to remember the Lords death we call communion.
In the time of Acts communion was held in conjunction with a common meal in homes throughout the city.
During communion the people would have a moment of quiet reflection and then they would express thanks to Jesus.
John, Acts: Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary, Volume 2 The Early Christian Experience and Practice (2:42–47)

This expression refers both to sharing ordinary meals together (furthering their fellowship) and to remembering the significance of the death of the Messiah by celebrating what came to be known as “the Lord’s Supper.” At this stage, the Lord’s Supper was held in conjunction with a common meal in homes throughout the city. This remembrance would have been a time of quiet reflection, as well as an occasion for expressing thanks to the risen Jesus and praising him for what he had accomplished.

Prayers
Word “pray/prayer in NKJV:Is used in the OT - 215 timesIs used in the NT - 159 timesIs used in the whole Bible - 374 times“
Scripture mentions a lot about prayer. So we are to be doing a lot of prayer. “
In this time of Acts the believers spent a lot of time in prayer, they prayed privately and together as a group.
It is likely that these Christians maintained a Jewish pattern of prayer which was setting aside 3 times a day to focus on prayer.
The early Christians would continue to go to the Temple and pray. Which is interesting because they are the only Christians with the opportunity to pray at the temple until the Anti Christ.
The prayers we read in the NT (specifically Acts) are centered on guidance, boldness in proclaiming gospel, praise, and blessing
John, Acts: Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary, Volume 2 The Early Christian Experience and Practice (2:42–47)

The first Christians spent much time before the Lord in prayer. They prayed privately, but they often prayed together as a group. It appears that many maintained the Jewish pattern of setting aside three times a day for focusing on prayer. Some continued to go to the temple and pray at the customary Jewish hours of prayer. Their prayers probably centered on blessing and praising God as well as asking him for guidance and for boldness in proclaiming the Gospel.

Prayer brings us into fellowship with God. It is our way to speak to God. God taught us how to pray (), and all throughout scripture we are exhorted to pray.
Prayer brings us into fellowship with God. It is our way to speak to God. God taught us how to pray (), and all throughout scripture we are exhorted to pray.
Do the Commands of Jesus:
Since Christ is the head of church () the church follows His commands.
Since there are many commands of Jesus and we don’t have the time to go through the Gospels and throughout the Epistles I will summarize into 7 main commands:
Actually I can summarize all 7 commands into 1 which is to seek first the Kingdom of God (laying all treasure in Heaven) (; )…
but how do we seek first the Kingdom of God? by doing these 7 commands that summarize the commands of Jesus
1.Love God ()
2. Love Neighbor (; (orphans, widows, sick, poor, and enemies - ; ; ) (do to others what you want done to you ()
3. Love Each Other (-love as He loved us (laying down life)
We can love each other not just in giving but in the gifts of the Spirit is seen in , and in .
. is a key verse in understanding the purpose for the gifts
The Bible says we are a body, and our gifts make us a part to that body, and so it makes us a whole as Christ as the head
4. Spread Gospel (; )
5. Make Disciples & Baptize ()
Baptism comes from the Greek word “βαπτίζω” -means to be immersed into, or identified with.
There are 5 baptisms in scripture but the baptism according to the Lord’s command is pretty simple.
The one being baptized is identifying Himself with God. Its doctrine speaks of death from old man, and being born again by the Spirit ().
6. Communion ().)
Communion was instituted by Jesus in ; ; ; .
We are to do this in remembrance of Jesus ().
The Lord’s Supper unites us with our Lord and Savior Jesus. It is His body, His blood, and we become one with Him by receiving it.
*maybe explain communion - passover lamb (), clean, cup of redemption, drink my blood.
The Lord’s Supper Leads to Another Supper.
If you partake of the Lord’s Supper you identify yourself with Him then you will be able to partake of the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb” ().
First you benefit from His salvation now then you will benefit from His fellowship later
7. Wait for His return ()
False Teachers:
I have dealt with a number of False Teachers and people deceived by them:

About Calvary Chapel

DISTINCTIVES
What I love about Calvary Chapel in my own view it has a little bit from a lot of other denominations.

CONCLUSCION

I will close with what I started with:
A complicated and divisive theology is an earthly thing… no need to get caught up in it too much now! Better to focus first on the Kingdom of God by obeying the commands Jesus has given to us, love God, our neighbors, each other, spread the gospel, make disciples, baptize, take communion, and wait for His return.
