Baptist Confessions of Faith 3. Assembly or Second London Confession

THE Supper of the Lord Jesus, was instituted by him, the same night wherein he was betrayed, to be observed in his Churches unto the end of the [page] world, for the perpetual remembrance, and shewing forth the sacrifice in his death confirmation of the faith of believers in all the benefits thereof, their spiritual nourishment, and growth in him, their further ingagement in, and to, all duties which they owe unto him;2 and to be a bond and pledge of their communion with him, and with each other.

As we gather today for the Lord’s Supper, I would like to read from the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith regarding this ordinance. It says… (Read Above)

Take special note that it not just a remembrance of what the Lord Jesus did for us, for his bride the Church. The communion of the Lord’s supper is more than that. It is a pledge of allegiance to the Lord. And not only to him, but to his body, which is the Church. As we partake together, we are remembering that Christ did die for us, and his blood was shed for us. But we also are pledging that we are united together in one common goal, one common Church. Consider what Paul says in ...

The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, since all of us share the one bread.

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?

I would ask as you take today, remember what it is you are doing. You are committing yourself to the Lord Jesus and his mission for the Church, to unite yourself with her, and to pledge yourself as one with her. You who take the Lord’s Supper should remember this and take note what it means. We take the same bread and the same wine. So for those of you who do not follow the Lord Jesus and pledge yourself as part of the bride of Christ, one with the Church, do not take the cup and the bread. It is not for you. This is a holy observance reserved only for the family of God. If you believe yourself to be part of that, then repent of your sins, follow the Lord Jesus, and take with us. But if you do not, pass the plate and remember what I have said.

This Communion is not just for members of Sonrise Church, but if you are a follower of Jesus, committed to his work in bringing his family home, then please partake with us. Please hold on to the elements so that we may take together as one body after I have prayed for the body and blood of Christ which was broken and bled for us.
