How Jesus Instructs You to Pray

* Opening Psalm: Psalm ______________
*Come to Pulpit
*Layout Items
*Greet Congregation -Good Morning I welcome you in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
*Turn in your Bible to repeat It can be found on Pg. ______ in your pew Bible.

Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

The Lord’s Prayer

5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

10  Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11  Give us this day our daily bread,

12  and forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13  And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
*Brief Prayer of Illumination -LET US PRAY
Father in heaven give us your people ears to hear what your Word and Spirit would have us to learn in Christ name AMEN

How Jesus Instructs You to Pray

When we as Christians pray to God we cannot pray this this prayer if we live in opposition to it in our everyday lives.
ILLUSTRATION
I cannot say “our” if I live only for myself.
I cannot say “Father” if I do not endeavor each day to act like his child.
I cannot say “who art in heaven” if I am laying up no treasure there.
I cannot say “hallowed be thy name” if I am not striving for holiness.
I cannot say “thy Kingdom come” if I am not doing all in my power to hasten that wonderful event.
I cannot say “thy will be done” if I am disobedient to his Word.
I cannot say “on earth as it is in heaven” if I’ll not serve him here and now.
I cannot say “give us this day our daily bread” if I am dishonest or am seeking things by subterfuge.
I cannot say “forgive us our debts” if I harbor a grudge against anyone.
I cannot say “lead us not into temptation” if I deliberately place myself in its path.
I cannot say “deliver us from evil” if I do not put on the whole armor of God.
I cannot say “thine is the kingdom” if I do not give the King the loyalty due him from a faithful subject.
I cannot attribute to him “the power” if I fear what men may do.
I cannot ascribe to him “the glory” if I’m seeking honor only for myself, and I cannot say “forever” if the horizon of my life is bounded completely by time.
(1) Let us not pray to to be seen by others.

5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward

(ESV) And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
Do you only pray to God when your at church.
Do you only pray to God when you are at the mid week Bible study.
Although praying at Church and praying at the midweek bible study are good things.
If this describes you check you motives for praying
Are you praying to be seen by others or are you praying because you truly seek to communicate with our Lord.
Our hearts desire and our motive should be to communicate with our Father.
Not for the praise of men. TELLS US - for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.
for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.
Let us as the people of God pray to our father earnestly
when we are sick - seems to be when most people understand their humanity and their frailness.
when we have a true need
When we desire to see the kingdom to be expanded and more people brought into the flock of God.
The key to this is pray to God for things that are according to his will
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Lets hunger and thirst for righteousness.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Our Father is the one who saved us.
Our Father is the one who has given us Jesus Christ.
(2) Let us pray to our Father in Secret and Not with empty Phrases.
(ESV) But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
So we should pray in private unless its corporate or family worship.
The goal is communication with God our Father and no one else around us.
So what rule has God given for our direction in prayer >
The WSC tells us in question 99 “The whole Word of God is of use to direct us in prayer; () but the special rule of direction is that form of prayer which Christ taught his disciples, commonly called The Lord’ s prayer. (, )
And
PRAYER—is a conversation with God; the intercourse of the soul with God,
Let us explore what prayer is a little more since we have not only the Lords Prayer but the entire Word of God to direct us in it.
PRAYER—is a conversation with God; the intercourse of the soul with God,
not in contemplation or meditation, but in direct address to him.
RAYER—is converse with God; the intercourse of the soul with God, not in contemplation or meditation, but in direct address to him. Prayer may be oral or mental, occasional or constant, ejaculatory or formal. It is a “beseeching the Lord” (); “pouring out the soul before the Lord” (); “praying and crying to heaven” (); “seeking unto God and making supplication” (); “drawing near to God” (); “bowing the knees” ().
Prayer may be oral or mental, occasional or constant,
You may blurt it out, or it may be formal.
It is a “beseeching the Lord” (); “
pouring out the soul before the Lord” (); “
praying and crying to heaven” (); “
seeking unto God and making supplication” (); “
drawing near to God” (); “
bowing the knees” ().
Prayer presupposes a belief in the personality of God, his ability and willingness to hold intercourse with us, his personal control of all things and of all his creatures and all their actions.
Let us not to pray to God with empty phrases.

(ESV And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
Acceptable prayer must be sincere (),
offered with reverence and godly fear,
ffered with reverence and godly fear, with a humble sense of our own insignificance as creatures and of our own unworthiness as sinners, with earnest importunity, and with unhesitating submission to the divine will. Prayer must also be offered in the faith that God is, and is the hearer and answerer of prayer, and that he will fulfil his word, “Ask, and ye shall receive” (, ; ; ; , ), and in the name of Christ (16:23, 24; 15:16; ; ; ; ).

3. So remember to pray to your Father in Secret and be direct and honest in your communication with him.
(3) Let us recognize God as our Father and Lord
(ESV) — 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Do you pray to you father?
If he is your father you ought to pray to him.
And he can only be your father if you believe on the name of Jesus Christ. our only mediator between God and man.
This was what Peter did when he recognized who Christ was in .
(ESV) — 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
(ESV) — 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
(ESV) — 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
So if you are in Christ pray to you Father in heaven because you have a mediator Christ Jesus who enables our prayers to be heard.
Now I have to point out that this prayer to the Father cannot be done by everyone.
We are reminded of this in (ESV) — 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
(ESV) — 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
We are told that these hypocrites that pray to God for the approval of men
The Father does not hear them because they are not his.
These are identified in our passage as those who are Jews praying in Synagogues
and Gentiles who pray with lots of words for show.
Do not deceive yourself that your prayers will be heard if you don’t believe and trust in Christ for salvation.
It is not your membership in the church that saves you.
It is not your saying of a prayer that saves you.
It is not the family you are apart of on earth that saves you it Christ alone through Faith alone that saves you
So only those who are trusting in Christ can honestly pray to God as their Father.
(4) Let us desire God’s perfect will to be done and ask for physical provision
(ESV) — 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread,
1. Examples of this in History of Gods will being done
Abraham’s servant prayed to God, and God directed him to the person who should be wife to his master’s son and heir ().
“Jacob prayed to God, and God inclined the heart of his irritated brother, so that they met in peace and friendship (; ).
Jacob prayed to God, and God inclined the heart of his irritated brother, so that they met in peace and friendship (; ).
David prayed, and God defeated the counsel of Ahithophel (; ; ).
Physical Provision
Samson prayed to God, and God showed him a well where he quenched his burning thirst, and so lived to judge Israel ().

If our son asks for bread (ESV) — 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

“David prayed, and God defeated the counsel of Ahithophel (; ; ).
Let us pray with the knowledge of Gods Word and understanding of what he desires for our lives.
Christ desires young men to find wives.
Christ desires families to come together and worship him
Christ desires you to work hard at your job for his glory.
Christ desires you to manage your money with him in mind.
Christ desires you to give to his work for the kingdom.
Christ desires you to commune with him at communion and every Lords Day when he is among us and preached to us.
and every Lords Day when he is amoung us.
Let us P
Let us ask for physical provision
(ESV) — 11 Give us this day our daily bread,
(5) Let us ask for forgiveness and forgive others and for spiritual protection.
(ESV) — 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
A story from to help you keep in mind why its so important for you to forgive OTHERS of their trrespasses
(ESV) — 23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
We must live forgive others when they sin against us.
We are commanded to forgive others by our Lord Jesus
Christ died to forgive you of your sins.
(ESV) — 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
(ESV) — 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
(ESV) — 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
(ESV) — 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(ESV) — 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
We must forgive others because its what our Lord does for us.
(ESV) — 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
And because we are warned if we don’t forgive others our father in heaven will not forgive us.
If we are unforgiving this may be speaking to whether Christ has given you a new spirit
:26And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Christ promised this to all his elect in Ezekiel 36:26
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
So check yourself and make sure that you are in Christ and you do have this forgiving spirit Christ promises us.

So if you are in Christ keep these things in mind

I can say “Our” because I live only for Christ.
