Luke 23:44–49 NASB95

It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, because the sun was obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last. Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent.” And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, began to return, beating their breasts. And all His acquaintances and the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

1. This is a clear picture of God’s wrath on our sin brought upon Jesus. (vss.44-45a)

Why was it dark?

An eclipse? Eclipses’ do not happen during a full

moon.

A full moon always accompanies Passover.

It was Satan.

Does Satan really have an effect over the natural world?

It was God

Notice the reaction of the people at Calvary (vs. 48)

Even though God is a God of Light, His presence is also seen

through physical darkness, especially when His wrath, or His

judgment, is poured out.

Those at Calvary knew what this was ….. It was God’s Judgement

Hell is a place of darkness as well.

12 but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

It is punishment for rejecting God

It is punishment set aside for Satan and his demons.

There is no light in hell.

When this darkness came when Jesus hung on the cross it was a fearing darkness

People were unprepared for it

Those at Calvary had to stay because they could not see

Preparations for all the Passover festivities had to cease

People knew it was God’s judgment at hand.

2. At the end of God’s judgment, the lights come back on and access to God is granted.

God is satisfied with Jesus’ atoning work on the cross

After 3 hrs of hell in Jerusalem, total darkness, Jesus enduring

the penalty of sin on the Cross, the lights come back on but

look at a small phrase in verse 45 ….. the veil was torn into.

This veil is the curtain that separates the Holy of Holies

from the rest of the Temple.

It is the place where God dwelt

Only one time per year was anyone suppose to

God back there

The Veil, that separation from God and man, was torn in two.

It was torn because God’s Wrath was satisfied.

With the veil gone it means that

Through Jesus we have direct access to God.

You don’t have to go through Me or anyone else

No more bloody sacrifices to atone for sin

The old covenant is gone and the birth of the New

Covenant begins

3. We see that Jesus said it was done. (vs.46)

It was a cry from Jesus

Now it is over.

It would have been physically impossible for Jesus to speak

loud enough for anyone to hear him, but people heard!

Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent.”

It was a loud cry one commentator said.

4. How should we respond? (vs. 47)

Recognize Jesus for who he truly was and by faith turn to Him.

Recognize who you are, a sinner and repent.

As a believer, remember the reason why you have salvation, by the sacrificial death of Jesus and His resurrection.

Identify with the Cross through Baptism.

Honor the work on the Cross with your obedient life to Jesus.

Conclusion

Your debt from your sin has been paid in full, but to redeem your payment, you have to put your faith and trust in Jesus alone!

We are called to lives lives worthy of someone dying for us, are we doing that?
