One More Year… Luke 13:1-9 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Luke 13:1 Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Luke 13:2-3 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them— do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” Luke 13:4-5 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. Luke 13:6 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ Luke 13:7 “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’” Luke 13:8-9 Blame & Justice What the Prophets have to Say God is the Good Gardener Not Judging Others Pursuing Justice and Hospitality And Relying on God Luke 13:1-9 = Luke 11-12 Blame & Justice = Not Judging Message of the Prophets God the Good Gardener = Pursuing Justice & Hospitality = Relying on God For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent. They sell the innocent for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. from Amos 2 They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed… Now then, I will crush you… Even the bravest of warriors will flee naked on that day. Declares the Lord. from Amos 2 I am like one who gathers summer fruit at the gleaning of the vineyard; there is no cluster of grapes to eat, none of the early figs that I crave. Micah 7:1 It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your houses. What do you mean by crushing my people and using the faces of the poor as your millstones? Isaiah 3:14-15 I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. Isaiah 5:1 He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit. Isaiah 5:2 “Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad? Isaiah 5:3-4 Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be destroyed; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled. Isaiah 5:5 I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.” Isaiah 5:6 Love Joy Peace Patience Kindness Goodness Faithfulness Gentleness Self-Control Galatians 5:22-23
