Who is Jesus?

Matthew 16:13-20

13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.18 “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.19 “And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

I. Who do men say that I the Son of Man Am?

A. John the Baptist? A preacher of repentence

B. Elijah? The for-runner of the Messiah.

C. Jeremiah? The weeping prophet.

D. Some other prophet come to life? Just another spokesman from God.

II. Who do you say that I Am?

A. Peter said — “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

B. Others in the Scripture have said:

1. Thou art My Beloved Son — said the Father

a. Mark 1:11 Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

2. I am the Son of God — Jesus Himself

a. John 10:36 “do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

3. This is the Son of God — John the Baptist

a. John 1:34 “And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

b. John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

4. Thou art the Son of God —

a. Nathaniel John 1:49 Nathaniel answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

b. Peter John 6:69 “Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

c. Martha John 11:27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

5. This was the Son of God — The Centurion

a. Matthew 27:25 And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”

6. Thou Son of God — the Demons

a. Matthew 8:34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region.

7. The Hope for Glory — Paul

a. Colossians 1:27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

III. Who Do You Say That Jesus Is?

A. A Good Man?

B. A Prophet?
