When I was in high school, I liked a girl.
I liked her so much that I made a point to hang out with her.
We planned it all out.
We were going to the mall.
I was going to pick her up from her house and take her to the mall.
We’d walk around and then I’d take her home.
I know… it was exciting times.

I had a time limit though, because I had to be home at a specific time for my parents.
It was a Wednesday night and I told my parents that I was going to youth group.
I went a different way and went to her house, picked her up and we spent some time at the mall.
I had just enough time to drop her off and then head back home.
No big deal.
So I thought.
Well, Sunday came and I went to church with my family.
The youth pastor’s wife came to me and said, “We missed you at youth group on Wednesday.”
I just shrugged and said that I was sick.
Church hadn’t begun yet and my dad lead from the lobby back to our car in .05
seconds.
My mom and sister went to the service.
He gave me a long talk about telling the truth and how important it was.
Unfortunately it wasn’t the last time I’d have to hear that talk.
Looking back I realized that he sat me down because he loved me, because he wanted me to do the right thing as I continued to grow up.
Even as an adult I still don’t always do the right thing.
I’m now on the other end of truth-telling as I raise my kids.
Luckily I wasn’t the first person to lie to someone.
Tonight we are going to spend some time looking at the disciple of Jesus, Peter.
He was often outspoken.
He often didn’t shy away from telling people how he felt.
We’re going to spend our time in and 27.
Jesus just finished the Last Supper with his disciples.
They end their time together with communion as well as the singing of a hymn.
They go from there to the Mount of Olives where the Garden of Gethsemane was located.
Matthew records the account as follows:

Maybe you’ve said something similar to Peter and the other disciples.
“I hope that if I’m ever in that situation I would not be afraid and hold my ground!”
Maybe you’ve had thoughts similar to, “I hope that if I’m ever in that situation I would not be afraid and hold my ground!”
After Jesus says these words he goes by himself to pray in the Garden before he is arrested.
When Jesus gets arrested Peter follows at a distance and sits in the courtyard as Jesus is being falsely accused inside the courtroom with the Sanhedrin.
1. Denial of knowledge
Peter is sitting outside near the fire.
It’s dimly lit and his face is shown in the fire.
A servant came to him and immediately recognized Peter as being with Jesus.
She spoke up and said, “You were with Jesus too!”
She must have spoken loud enough to get everyone’s attention, because “he denied it in front of everyone”.
Without thinking of the consequences for his actions he denied being with Jesus.
Maybe you have talked without thinking.
It’s the foot in the mouth statement that could have been avoided.
1. Denial of knowledge

2. Denial of Relationship
In court when a person is giving testimony they are asked to pledge an oath of, “telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth...”
Peter just denied knowledge and a relationship with Jesus.
“I don’t know the man”
This is the man who descended from heaven and came in the form of a baby born, not in a hospital, but in a feeding trough.
He grew up and was fully God and fully man, knowing the past, present and future of the whole universe....
He even chose Peter as his closest friend.
He knew, really knew Peter like no other person on earth knew him.
And Peter goes fluffs it off and denies he even had knowledge or a relationship???
3. Denial of Self-Control
This is similar to the type of cursing that might take place when someone cuts us off in traffic.
It is a type when we lose our cool.
We have no self-control and we often hurt others with our words.
Maybe there have been times when you’ve hurt someone with your words.
Bottom line: our sinfulness needs forgiveness.
I have 5 kids ages 9 and younger.
Most times they are obedient and a joy to be around.
There are some occasions when that isn’t the case.
They disobey and fight with each other, etc.
There are times when I find myself saying that the older one is responsible, while the younger one is not.
That’s not the complete truth.
The younger child is still growing into their responsibilities and often times I have put them in a box because… they’re just 2 years old.
Maybe you’ve had an experience where the emotion was overwhelming and you wept bitterly.
Just like I lied to my parents....
I am a sinful person and I need the forgiveness of Jesus.
Our sinfulness needs forgiveness.
But that wasn’t the end of Peter…
After Jesus resurrection he was forgiven and restored.
Distance separated Jesus and Peter, but more that that it was Peter’s sin.

Peter went on to spread the Gospel and was instrumental in the spread of the first century church.

We are sinners in need of forgiveness.
It is only through the blood of Jesus that a person is able to attain heaven.
It is simply by grace through faith that is not from anything we do.
It is a gift of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
As we prepare to take communion, maybe there’s something that you need to ask the Lord to forgive.
Give that to Him tonight so that you can be forgiven.
