Introduction
What stands out most in Jesus’s life that he did?
Miracles.
Healings.
Walking on the Water.
Something most of us wouldn’t say as a first response but that all agree is important is that Jesus forgave people.
The word forgive means to give up any right to compensation.
If you forgive a financial debt, the person who owed you the money has no obligation to pay back anything.
Ah, but what if you forgive a wrong done to you? We’ve all heard people say, “I forgive but I don’t forget.”
It would seem that is a different kind of forgiveness from what God offers.
Jeremiah tells us about what the future is like for the children of God.
p. 561
When we say “I forgive but I don’t forget” we really aren’t forgiving.
We may not want to be paid back in dollars, but we are holding on to a grudge and that grudge is emotional compensation or payback for the wrong we suffered.
No, forgiveness means to also forget.
p. 428
The first word of Jesus on the cross were a prayer of forgiveness.
p. 748
If we pause and think about the moment as it actually happened, these are not the first words we would expect.
Luke 23:32:38
Jesus had been brutally beaten, perhaps worse than any beating anyone had ever endured.
Isaiah’s prophecy clearly describes what Jesus endured.
p. 523
Why would these be the first words he said?
Even more, why would He say these words at all?
1. Jesus life and ministry was all about forgiveness

2. Jesus’s compassion led him to pray for these men.
He prayed this first because our forgiveness was His goal in His life and it would be in His death.
66677
Who was Jesus praying for?
I think all those who brought about his death.
The Jewish leaders, Pilate and the Roman soldiers.
There are degrees of punishment in hell.
Can you imagine any worse sin than killing the Son of God?
Yet they didn’t know at the time that is what they were doing!
Jesus knew that and prayed for forgiveness for this deed.
Jesus had to die to pay for our sins.
Someone had to bring about His death.
It was His compassion that prayed this.
3. What is our response?
Accept the forgiveness of God if you’ve never trusted by believing Jesus died for you.
Accept the forgiveness of God if you have trusted in Him but still carry guilt for sins you’ve confessed many times.
You are dishonoring the death of Jesus by continuing to feel guilty for sins you have confessed.
Pray for those who are dear to you that they will understand the Gospel.
Examine your heart.
Are there sins you are doing that “you know not what you do” is sin?
Probably.
Practice forgiveness.
If there is anyone in your life you haven’t forgiven, forgive them.
Right here, right now.
No they don’t need to ask you for forgiveness.
These didn’t ask Jesus.
I think some of them did later and were it not for God’s cleansing forgiveness, they couldn’t have lived even one day with peace.
