Worship Series – Part 1

“Worship Like a Child”

Luke 9:46-50

Who Will Be the Greatest?

46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all—he is the greatest.”

49 “Master,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”

50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Introduction of Worship

·         Jack Hayford - "Worship changes the worshiper into the image of the One worshiped"

  • Transitive verb – direct object
  • Intransitive verb – no direct object but participation

    • Attitude of worship

Vs 46 – Argument about Greatness

  • Vs 1-6 – power to heal and preach
  • Vs 10-17 – feed five thousand
  • Vs 27 – Kingdom of God before dying
  • Vs 28-36 – Peter, James & John to mountain
  • Vs 44-45 – They didn’t get it
  • Kingdom of God should be great – shouldn’t it?

Vs 47a – Thoughts - Greek (καρδία) heart

  • Jesus doesn’t say anything, he acts (How?)

Vs 47b - A little child (Why?)

  • Children were a blessing to have but had no rights
  • They were the dogs of society
  • Archinos said: “Morning sleep, mid-day wine, chattering with children and tarrying in places where men of the common people assemble, destroy a man

Vs 48 – Jesus never addresses the subject-Greatness

·         He lets the Holy Spirit speak

  • Jesus was saying when their hearts accepted the least in society, as if it were Him: then they would be great in God’s eyes.
  • The least is the most
