Easter - In this world you will have trouble

Today’s message is for those who have tried Jesus but things didn’t go like you thought

Maybe you tried going to church but your girlfriend still broke up with you

or your car broke down

sometimes we have a false idea of what Jesus said so we have the wrong expectations

some things that Jesus never said:

- whoever does the will of my father, will always get the best parking spots

if you lose your life for my sake, always look good in a swimsuit

seek first the kingdom of God, and you’ll never get a zit before prom

Jesus never promised that you’d be healthy wealthy or thin

keep hair- turned down for a date - zit before prom - wifi buffering

Jesus giving life givnig instructions to his disciples

John 16:20 NLT

I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.

Jesus uses “world” 19 times in his next conversation

if the world hates you, hated me first

if you belong to the world, love you as it’s own

It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world.

I saw this 3 times with Megan

almost didn’t use drugs with 1st one

when it’s over she didn’t remember the pain while she held the newborn

So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.

In this world you will have trouble

you may have days when you feel like trding in one of your kids

plumbing may backup just before your guests arrive

may lose your job

he may dump you

you may struggle to keep your faith

Pain is a promise

suffering in this world is inevitable

difficult season

feel left out - overlooked - rejected - alone

lost confidence - battling depression - anxious

got bad news - financial struggle - health challenges - relationship in shambles

pressure feels unbearable - more than humanly possible

maybe in this place you are wondering where God is

if pain is a promise then there must be some kind of purpose

trouble and hardships prove your faith

Peter wrote to a group of persecuted Jesus followers

there was a leader in that time who was terrible to Jesus followers

take animal skins around Christians

sew them in

turn them lose and have wild dogs chase them while the people watched the dogs eat them alive

pour wax on christians and burn them like human candles at his home while he had a party with his friends

Peter wrote these words to people who were experiencing this kind of trouble

1 Peter 1:6 NLT

So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while.

It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. if there is a genuine faith then there must also be a counterfit faith

I experienced this raised in church and knew

trials came - got married

and my faith wasn’t geniune so I fell appart

I hear this all the time

everyone that I talk to says that they are a Christian

but many aren’t in church

this happened / that happened

now I’m sitting at home with my drug problem just trying to cope

we talked about this some last week with the sower and the seed

that the worries & cares of this world will choke out

they don’t have the root

when we think that God isn’t real b/c he didn’t answer our prayers or fix our problems

our faith is not genuine

when our faith is genuine we will stand strong in the storms because our faith is not in our circumstances but it is in Jesus

In John Jesus contrasts being in Him and being in the world

in the world you will have troubles

Jesus says In me you will have peace

in the middle of trouble and sin filled world you can still have peace

I have been in many devistating situations for both myself and for those around me and something that is always overhelming for me to think of and profess in these moments is that God is good even in days that are not

He can turn your mourning into joy

Trials prepare you for purpose

not that something is happening to you

but something is happening through you and in you

ease and comfort never make you stronger

allowing the resistance strengthen us

resistance strengthens your faith

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

complements may make me feel good

but rejection and criticism has made me stronger

my in-laws put me off for 6 months to go have dinner and talk

in their defense I was 19 and their daughter was 18

Early in my ministry I was working with high school students

there was a guy that would throw such a fit if we had a shoe mark on the floor that I would scan the entire room after every meeting

I have had people correct me when I was wrong and I have grown from those times

I have had people challenge me to my motives

test me to my faithfulness in God

I was physically attacked after one of my most spiritually high moments in my life because of what God was doing

and it made me stronger

after being faithful with our lives my wife and I had become fully devoted followers of Christ we had our 5 year old diagnosed with cancer 2 times

we could have doubted God’s existance or we could know that this world has many troubles

could it be that God’s package of preparation comes packaged as pain?

peter stepped out on the water with Jesus and sank

denied Jesus 3 times then rose up and spoke boldly

when life is tough

not something happening to me

but thru me

not just pain but preparation

it’s purifying your heart

if your ready in your pain there is always purpose

the good news is not that Jesus delivered you from your pain but that He delivered you from your sin!

Having faith is not about having life as you hoped

it’s about dying to self and giving ourselves to Jesus

lot living for this world but for the one to come

That’s why Jesus said

John 16:33 NLT

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

in this world

you will be rejected

you will have tough days

you will have pain

But at the end of this life

when we show that our faith has been proven

1 John 5:4–5 NIV

for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
