The resurrection is the most earth-altering, earth-shattering event in human history.
It is the most well-documented fact of ancient history.
And yet, it is the most debated fact of all history.
There is nothing more consequential than your reception or rejection of the resurrection of Jesus.
I can think of only 3 reasons people do not believe the resurrection:
Unfamiliar with the facts
Gary Habermas - Minimal Facts Approach
Lee Strobel - Set out to disprove Christianity and became a Christian
Presuppose miracles are not possible
In a circular way, the rejection of miracles causes one to reject all evidence of miracles
People don’t like the implications
That they are going to be held accountable for their actions
Underlying reason is that unless God reveals himself to us, we will by nature reject him. Mankind is bound by the curse of sin. This curse is precisely what Jesus came to reverse and in doing so bring glory to himself and glory to the Father.
When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
Knowing all that would happen to him...
God had a plan. From the beginning, God had a plan.
That plan was the glory of God.
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
The hour has come...
What hour? The hour of the crucifixion. This is the high point of all the history of the universe.
There is no more significant scene in this play.
You are not the significance

“You’re not a good person. The world is not better off with you. You don’t have a good heart. The biggest enemy in your life, is you. The biggest problem you have, is you. You can stop blaming your parents, you can stop blaming your politicians, you can stop blaming your genetics, you can stop blaming your culture, you can stop blaming your upbringing. At the end of the day, you are responsible before God, for you. You are not the solution, you are the problem. Jesus Christ came to save from Satan, sin, death, hell, the wrath of God and to save you from you. You are the greatest enemy you have. If you are the enemy, who’s going to save you from you? If you are the problem, the solution cannot be you. We’re not evolving and getting better. Education, will not fix this problem. Economic equality, will not fix this problem. Social justice, will not fix this problem. This is not only your problem, this is the problem of all humanity, this is the problem of sin, and only Jesus is the solution to that problem. Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.
When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
The cup the Father has given me...
Jesus knew what was about to happen, he laid his life down for his sheep.
Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
My kingdom is not of this world...
Jesus is a king and he does have a kingdom. But this place we live now is just temporary.
The Bible teaches us that we have a spirit. That our spirits are eternal.
Think about someone who is maimed? Are they less themselves because of it?
Even brain damage or dementia?
How would you know? You’d have to talk to someone from the other side. We have that someone. His name is Jesus.
From the Father
In the beginning
Creator of heaven and earth
Sustainer of all things, he holds all things together by the word of his power!
Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
You say that I’m a king...
But not the type of king that Pilate was thinking.......
For this purpose...
Truth.
Jesus came from heaven, he ascended back into heaven, he is preparing a place for his redeemed people!

So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.
So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.

Feeling alone is absolutely the worst feeling in the world.
All Jesus’ friends abandon him in his greatest hour of need.
Jesus was crucified with criminals, blamed but innocent, accused but without fault, condemned but without sin
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
All was now finished...
God had a plan all along.
God had purposes, things for Jesus to fulfill
God has the ability to take the evil of man, and turn it for good.
God took the most evil act in all human history, and turned it into the greatest good.
If God can do that, he can turn whatever evil you are facing in you life to good.
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.
He must rise from the dead...
Why? Why must he rise?
Because this was the defeat of death.
This was the defeat of the power of death.
This was the clear and decisive reversal of the curse.
Romans 5 explains that through one man death entered the world, and through one man grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ.
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
to the soul who seeks him.
It is good that one should wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
