The Resurrection for Today
Central Truth or Title?
Today the Resurrection impacts my soul.
The Resurrection of Jesus effects me today.
C.T. ***The Resurrection impacts my soul today.
Song - If this is real this changes everything.
Hook - Invention that effects us still to this day.
Chinese invention of gunpowder.
In 142 A.D. Chinese alchemists were playing with chemical substances in search of a mixture that would give eternal life. They created a substance that when lit would flame, spark and dance. Little did they know at the time - they had created gunpowder.
-The effect of the creation of gunpowder in 142 A.D. has echoed through the walls of history and effected greatly many generation. Through gunpowder the Chinese defeated the Mongols. By the use of gunpowder the Revolutionary war was fought and won by the Revolutionists. Today, gun powder is used from children’s fireworks to industrial tools like rivet guns.
The point is this - something that happened almost 2,000 years ago still has a great effect on us now.
Today we celebrate a miracle that happened 2,000 years ago that still has a deep effect on us now. Today we celebrate Easter. The day that Jesus was raised from the dead.
Transition-
Transition - The greatest day in history is celebrated today. The day that Jesus was raised from the dead.
How does a historical event from 2,000 years ago effect us today?
Today we are going to look at just 3 ways the resurrection of Jesus effects us today.
1. Through the Resurrection I can be Justified
Justification
Romans 4:24–25 ESV
24 but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
Romans 4:24
What is Justification? To be declared righteous. Your sins no longer held against you. Declared not guilty.
Romans 4:25 ESV
who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
“... It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.”
I Corinthians 15:17
1 Corinthians 15:17 ESV
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.
... It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
So we see that part of the purpose of the resurrection is to bring to the Christ followers life “Justification”
I Peter tells us this in Chapter 1, verse 3.
1 Peter 1:3 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Why do those who have been born again have a living hope?
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,”
Why do those who have been born again have a living hope?
Because Jesus conquered: Satan, Sin/selfishness, & death when He was raised from the dead.
We have been spiritually raised from the dead & justified (being guiltless) by fulling trusting in Jesus. Giving your entire life to Him.
Have you been Justified by Jesus? Have you given your entire life to Him?
There are people in this room today who God is calling right now to put your full trust in Jesus. Turning your entire life over to Him and His control.
Will you right now say “Yes” to Jesus. Do not wait to the end of the sermon. Do not wait another day to “Think about it.” Trust Jesus now. Be Justified - Have you sin forgiven - not counted against you.
Through the cross and the resurrection Jesus can forgive your selfishness. He can forgive you of terrible words. He can forgive you of your addictions ...
He can forgive you of your addictions ...
Through the Resurrection you can be justified.
The very things in my life that steal my peace Jesus has conquered.
Through the Resurrection of Jesus I have peace.
2. Through the Resurrection I can have Peace.
The resurrection of effects can effect your soul today.
Not only can I can be justified and I can have peace.
2. Through the Resurrection I can have Peace.
A. We have peace with God because we are No longer enemies.
Romans 5:10 NIV
10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
Through Jesus life, through His resurrection from death to life, our relationship to God was made right.
If you are not a Christ follower the Bible is clear. God calls you His enemy. Why? You are not following Him. You are living for yourself, going your own way, not giving yourself to God being King of your life.
If you are a Christ follower ...
You went from being enemies to being friends.
You went from being a child who was disobedient and living life selfishly to a child of God who love Him and is trying to follow Him.
We have peace with God through Jesus resurrection.
B. We also have peace with God because we are no longer condemned and we are no longer a people of sinful shame
We have peace from shame
Jesus is our advocate and an intercessor,
-34
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
We see through that we have peace because God, who is our great judge, does not condemn those who have been saved.
B. Through the resurrection we have peace from our shame because we are no longer condemned for our sin. God chooses to remember them no more.
B. We have peace from shame - Because we have been justified by God, our past sins have been paid for. God does not count that against us. God chooses to remember them no more.
You say, Pastor you don’t know what I have done.
I may not know what you have done, but I know what Jesus has done for you.
He has taken your shame so you can live with Him at peace.
We are not longer His enemy and we no longer have to walk in the shame of our past. He has forgiveness us through the Resurrection.
Romans 5:10 NIV
10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
Through Jesus life, through His resurrection back to life, our relationship to God was made right.
We went from being enemies to being friends.
We went from being children who were disobedient and living life selfishly to children who love Him and trying to follow Him.
We have peace with God through Jesus resurrection
Jesus has life because He was raised from the dead.
We are not longer His enemy and we no longer have to walk in the shame of our past. He has forgiveness us through the Resurrection.
Through the resurrection our relationship with God was made right.
We are not longer His enemy and we have peace from...
and we have peace from...
C. We have peace
Romans 8:34 ESV
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Through the Resurrection we are Justified, we have peace and finally...
Through the Resurrection of Jesus I have Purpose.
3. Through the Resurrection I Have Purpose
“We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.”
“We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.”
What does it mean to walk in newness of life?
It means to live a life where Jesus is the center.
In 1514 an astronomer named made a discovery and wrote a theory that turned the scientific community on its head. Previously, we thought the sun and the galaxy revolved around the earth. Copernicus said, nope the earth and other bodies rotate around the sun.
When Jesus is in the center of your life. You don’t expect Him and everyone else to revolve around you.
You revolve around the son S.O.N.
Our purpose is not to follow the empty desires of our life, but follow the eternal plan of God the Father.
It is my preference to rarely use the term Christian. I think the word Christian has lost its meaning. I prefer the term Christ Follower.
It is my preference to rarely use the term Christian. I think the word has lost its meaning.
Why not Christian? 9 out of 10 people in Jefferson county call themselves Christians, but so many of those people who wear the name of Christian are not Christ followers. How do you know? Just watch their life.
It doesn’t even in the slightest revolve around God.
A Christ follower follows God.
Your purpose is to follow God.
Transition - Let me close by sharing with you a story.
Closing story - Youth group in the Chicago area, gangbangers attending, but hanging out in the back and listening. After one youth group meeting they approach the youth leaders and wanted to know if they could ask a few questions.
Closing story - Youth group in the Chicago area, gangbangers attending, but hanging out in the back and listening. They approach after youth group lets out. “Do you really believe that a dead guy came to life?
“Do you really believe that a dead guy came to life?
Why would they ask that question?
If it is true, it changes everything.
It means that you can be justified before God.
It means you can have real peace.
It means that your life’s purpose is not for the short term self, but on the eternal God.
So how are you going to respond?
Because Jesus was raised from the dead by His own power:
Will you make a commitment to follow Him and obey Him more deeply?
Will you ....
Will you ....
If you are not a Christ follower, will you trust Him now to forgive your sins and give your entire life over to Him.
We will have a closing song. I will be down front.
If you would like prayer.
