Matthew 21:1–2 ESV
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.
Matthew 21:3–4 ESV
If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
Matthew 21:5–6 ESV
“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.

(1) Jesus painted a picture on Palm Sunday

The picture Jesus painted here--
(1) Romans would have seen Jesus as a conquering general
(2) Jewish people would have Jesus as a fulfilment of prophecy
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Malachi 3:1 ESV
“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.
Mal 3:1
(3) Jesus was coming as the one who is victorious
John 11:57 ESV
Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

(2) Jesus was coming as king on Palm Sunday

Jesus’ life demonstrates him as king
- declared king
- anointed as king
- recognized as king
- enemies call him king
- Jesus calls himself king
Parables - shows the kingdom arrived
Matthew 21:7–8 ESV
They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
Matthew 21:9–10 ESV
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”
Matthew 21:11 ESV
And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Matthew 21:9 ESV
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

Let’s celebrate!!

(3) The problem on Palm Sunday

Luke 19:41–42 ESV
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
People missed the true reason why they should celebrate
They thought he was going to be like David
They thought he was going to be like Moses
Deuteronomy 18:15 ESV
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen—
People want Jesus to do what they want Jesus to do.
Matthew 12:19–20 ESV
He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory;

(4) How do we not miss Palm Sunday?

Questions we need to ask ourselves-
(1) Do we celebrate Jesus when we should?
Philippians 4:4 ESV
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
(2) Do we actually listen to Jesus?
Matthew 11:15 ESV
He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
(3) Do we see Jesus as Lord?
