Overview

Author:

Time period:

AD 80-90 (possibly as early as AD 70)

Audience:

Jewish

Style:

Why:

Theme: Jesus as King
Functions as bridge between OT and NT
Emphasis: Jesus’ teaching (5 discourses)
One of three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke)

Culture:

second generation of Christians
defining event was the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple by the Romans in AD 70 in the course of the First Jewish–Roman War (AD 66–73)
from this point on, what had begun with Jesus of Nazareth as a Jewish messianic movement became an increasingly Gentile phenomenon evolving in time into a separate religion
The Christian community to which Matthew belonged, like many 1st-century Christians, was still part of the larger Jewish community: hence the designation Jewish Christian to describe them

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

What does this tell me about God?

He wants us to know what is going to happen; He wants us to be prepared
What He says will happen is true and sure
when we set our mind on the things of men rather than the things of God, we are a hindrance to Christ ()

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

What does this tell me about God?

He calls us to a way that is contrary to the world
He calls us to a way that is contrary to our human nature
To follow Him we must deny ourself
Christ is going to come with His angels; in His glory

Chapter 17

The Transfiguration

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

What does this tell me about God?

Jesus tells his disciples a second time what is to happen
He wants us to know what is to come; He wants us to be prepared
The disciples were “greatly distressed”

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

What does this tell me about God?

Not God of the dead, but of the living
Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection
They did not know the Scriptures nor the power of God
In the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage; they are like angels in heaven

The Great Commandment

Whose Son Is the Christ?

Chapter 23

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

Lament over Jerusalem

What does this tell me about God?

God is patient; has been willing to “gather” Jerusalem many times; but they were not willing
At the return of Christ- they will say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”

Chapter 24

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

Historical fact: Temple was destroyed in AD 70

Signs of the End of the Age

Many will come saying, “I am the Christ”
They will lead many astray
Wars and rumors of wars
Be not alarmed; the end is not yet
nation will rise against nation
famines and eathquakes
This is the beginning of the birth pains
You will be delivered up to tribulation and death
You will be hated by all nations for His name’s sake
Many will fall away, betray one another, hate one another
Many false prophets will rise; lead many astray
lawlessness will be increased
love of many will grow cold
The one who endures to the end will be saved
Gospel will be proclaimed throughout the whole world

The Abomination of Desolation

What does this tell me about God?

He wants us to know what is going to happen
He wants us to be prepared
Foretelling- just as He did His death/resurrection
For the sake of the elect, those days will be cut short
False christs/false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders
Do not go to where they say he is
The coming of the Son of Man will be as lightning (shining from the east to the west); all will see and know; it will not be in secret

Coming of the Son of Man

Lesson of the Fig Tree

No One Knows That Day and Hour

Chapter 25

Parable of the Ten Virgins

What does this tell me about God?

No one knows the day or hour the bridegroom will come
He expects us to be ready
He expects us to be prepared

Parable of the Talents

What does this tell me about God?

He gives generously
He expects us to do something with what He has given
He reaps where He has not sown
He gathers where He scattered no seed
Those who invest (use) the gift of the Spirit they have been given; they will be given more- in abundance
Those who do not invest (use) the gift of the Spirit they have been given; it will be taken away, they are “worthless” and will be cast into the outer darkness
If we are not good stewards of the gift; the gift will be removed

The Final Judgement

What does this tell me about God?

Christ will come in His glory
Christ will come will all the angels
Christ will sit on his throne
He will gather all nations before Him
He will separate the sheep from the goats
Sheep on the right; goats on the left
Sheep inherit the kingdom He has prepared; eternal life
The kingdom was prepared from the foundation of the world
He expects us to feed the hungry
He expects us to give drink to the thirsty
He expects us to clothe the naked
He expects us to welcome strangers
He expects us to visit the sick
He expects us to care for the prisoner
How we care for others- is how we care for Him
The goats he will send to “the eternal fire”; eternal punishment
We are to serve “the least of these”

Chapter 26

Plot to Kill Jesus

Two days before the Passover
Jesus told his disciples he would be crucified
Caiaphas (high-priest), chief priests and elders plot to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him
Not during the feast- would cause uproar among the people

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

Bethany
House of Simon the leper
alabaster flask of very expensive ointment
poured on his head
disciples “indignant”; why this waste?
“She has done a beautiful thing to me”
preparing him for burial
She will be remembered wherever the gospel is proclaimed

Judas to Betray Jesus

one of the twelve
Judas goes to the chief priests (they did not come to him)
“What will you give me…?”
thirty pieces of silver
From that moment, sought an opportunity to betray him

Passover with the Disciples

What does this tell me about God?

First day of Unleavened Bread
Disciples prepare the Passover feast
Judas calls him Rabbi- others call him Lord
“One of you will betray me”
They were sorrowful, “Is it I, Lord?”
fulfillment of the scriptures
Judas- “Is it I, Rabbi?”
Jesus- “You have said so.”

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

What does this tell me about God?

blessed it
He gave his body and blood for us
blood of the covenant- poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins
broke it
We will drink wine with him in his Father’s kingdom
gave it to the disciples
“Take, eat; this is my body”
He took a cup
gave thanks
gave it to the disciples
“Drink of it…this is my blood of the covenant…poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

What does this tell me about God?

He knows we will deny him
went out to the Mount of Olives
“You will all fall away...”
He loves us anyway
“after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee”
Peter- “I will never fall away”
Jesus- you will deny me three times before the rooster crows
Peter- even if I die, I will not deny you
all the disciples said the same
