Scene A: (The Resurrection- 1-10)
Mary Magdalene-
- Had 7 demons cast out of her, supported Jesus’ ministry financially
- Was there at Jesus’ crucifixion, had “followed him and ministered to him”.
Peter & John-
Leaders, part of the inner circle, not surprising that Mary went to them.
Setting-
First day of the week, early (while it was still dark), stone was rolled away
She sees the empty tomb, runs and tells Peter and John, they go and see then return home.
Cyril of Jerusalem on , “In Paradise was the Fall, and in the garden our salvation. From the tree sin came, and until the tree- sin lasted.”
Observations-
The details of the linen strips and face cloth, why go into this detail? John wants our attention here. This is another proof of the resurrection. No thief would have stripped the corpse of the linens, nor have taken the time to fold up the facial cloth!
What did John believe? (Verse 8) Did he believe Mary’s testimony or the reality of the Resurrection? Verse 9 would seem to indicate the former, they didn’t understand the Scriptures at that point.
Scene B: (1st Appearance- 11-18)
Observations-
Mary is weeping, its dark, the looks in the tomb, sees two angels, appears she doesn’t realize she is talking to angels, then sees Jesus and doesn’t realize who He is either.
Jesus calls her by name and sends her to tell the disciples that he will ascend to His Father. Mary obeys and goes and tells the disciples she has seen the Lord.
Jesus appears first to a weeping woman, other accounts mention multiple women, John zeroes in on this encounter with Mary Magdalene. He comforts her, calls her by name, and sends her out to be his witness!
Scene C: (2nd Appearance- 19-23)
Observations-
Appears to Mary in the dark of the morning, appears to the disciples in the dark of the evening. Specific time is mentioned, why?
The disciples had their doors locked, and 10 of them were together. They were apparently very afraid of the Jews. Luke records that the disciples did not receive Mary’s )The Women’s) Testimony. (Lk. 24:11)
Jesus appears, first thing said is: “Peace be with you.” Showed them his wounds.
Jesus sends them as the Father has sent them, breathes on them the Holy Spirit
What does verse 23 mean?
Scene D: (3rd Appearance- 24-29)
Observations-
Why wasn’t Thomas there?
Like the disciples didn’t believe the women’s testimony, Thomas doesn’t believe the disciples Testimony. Thomas needed to see and touch before he believed.
Jesus appears 8 days later. Greets them, tells Thomas to see and feel his wounds. To believe.
Thomas confesses Jesus as His Lord and God.
Jesus blesses those who believe what they have seen. (Blessing us)
Epilogue: (30-31)
Written so that we may believe Jesus is the Christ/Messiah, that He is the Son of God, and that believing we may have life in His name.
