1 The Difference, 5:16-18

1 The Difference, 5:16-18

1.1 What is the result of walking by the Spirit?

Galatians 5:16 ESV
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

1.2 Why are these two desires opposed to each other?

Galatians 5:17 ESV
17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

1.3 Does the NT lead or coerce?

Galatians 5:18 ESV
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

2 The Dual-List, 5:19-23

2.1 The Works of the Flesh Metric,

Galatians 5:19–21 ESV
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
· If evidence of this 1st Metric is found in you, what can you not inherit?

2.2 The Fruit of the Spirit Metric,

Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
· If evidence of this 2nd Metric is found in you, how many laws are you still guilty of?

3 The Deduction, 5:24-25

3.1 What have Spirit led disciples already done?

Galatians 5:24 ESV
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

3.2 What do Spirit led disciples continue to do?

Galatians 5:25 ESV
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
