John 12:12 NIV84
The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.

We shift from the dinner table to the streets of Jerusalem. Thousands had come in preparation for Passover. Many wondered if Jesus was going to attend like He had done in the past.
John
John 12:13 NIV84
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!”
They lined His path with their clothes and palm branches. Why?
They shouted HOSANNA which means “save us.” They included words from the Messianic Psalm
Psalm 11
Psalm 118:25–26 NIV84
O Lord, save us; O Lord, grant us success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.
Psalm 118:26 NIV84
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.

Jesus’ miracles repeatedly caused the crowds to praise and glorify God. Such praise was short lived because it often looked for physical and political deliverance rather than for the fulfillment of God’s purposes.
John 12:14
:14
John 12:14–15 NIV84
Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, “Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
John 12:14 NIV84
Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,
Why did Jesus ride a donkey instead of being driven through the streets on a chariot like a king?
This is fulfilled prophecy as found in Zechariah, which was written in the middle 500’s BC.
Zechariah 9:9 NIV84
Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
The phrase “Daughter of Zion” was a well known phrase for the expression of the citizens of Jerusalem.
John 12:16 NIV84
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.
John 12:
“At first his disciples did not understand all this.”
What else did that disciples not understand?
Luke 2:50 NIV84
But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Luke 2:
Luke 9:45 NIV84
But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
Luke 18:34 NIV84
The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.
Luke 18:
Mark 9:32 NIV84
But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.
“Only after He was Glorified”
When was Jesus glorified?
John 2:22 NIV84
After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
Also when they received the Holy Spirit they received.
John 7:39 NIV84
By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
John 7L
John 20:21–23 NIV84
Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
When we study the truth of scripture, we have these “a-ha” moments and understanding takes place. This is a precious gift from God!
John 12:17 NIV84
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.
Go back to , Jesus prayed to the Father and so the crowd would hear.
John 11:42 NIV84
I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”
Now, they were still testifying what Jesus had done. This miracle had great power to convince others and bring them to faith. What can we testify about right now that shows what Jesus has done in our lives?
John 12:
John 12:18 NIV84
Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him.
Why is it important to be able to share what Jesus has done in your life?
John 12:19 NIV84
So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
Why were the Pharisees so frustrated?
Such testimony disturbs those that oppose the Lord. The Pharisees certainly did get upset.
As for the rest of the crowd, this quote from Bob Goff sums it up: “They would lay down their palms; He would lay down His Life. A lot can change in a week.”
