3 Observation on the Cross

6 All we like sheep have gone astray;

we have turned—every one—to his own way;

and the Lord has laid on him

the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,

yet he opened not his mouth;

like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,

and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,

so he opened not his mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away;

and as for his generation, who considered

that he was cut off out of the land of the living,

stricken for the transgression of my people?

Transition - As we look at our text this evening, What are key truths that must keep in mind as we remember the death of Jesus?

This first truth is this.

1.

Without exception, Everyone has sinned against God.

I have sinned against God. vs. 6

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him [Christ] the iniquity of us all.

-In this important Biblical truth we as sinful humans take a beating.

-Why?

There is no defense for us.

We are confronted with our spiritual failure.

We are confronted with our spiritual brokenness.

“We have gone astray” “We have gone our own way” Selfishness has ruled our life.

We are rebels against the holiness and goodness of God.

pounds us again.

ebellion against a sacrificing God. vs. 6

In our American culture of humanism we think we are basically good people.

The Bible says that our hearts intentions are on evil.

Even those who seek noble acts: serving others, helping the sick, encouraging the broken hearted - when God is not the center of our good works - then part of that good work is done for us - to make us feel better about ourselves.

So we see without God’s intervention (even in our good works) , that our hearts intention is not pure.

Even the most respected person in your life, that person with the highest integrity, still sins.

continues to kick us while we are down.

Where does this all leave us?

It leaves us with guilt.

We are guilty before a holy God.

The kind of guilt that we have we cannot overcome on our own.

We are in desperate need of a savior.

Transition - As we lay on the floor of sins ocean, dead in our sins, God reaches down.

When His knuckles scraped bottom of the ocean, He picked us up and gave us hope.

In verse 7 we begin to have hope, but it is at the expense of Jesus.

2. Jesus willingly became my sacrifice, vs. 7

… Emphasis on “willingly”

Isaiah 53:7

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

We see that Jesus was not controlled by his fleshly desire, but He willingly went to the cross.

We know that during His suffering that Jesus was beaten, He was mocked, He was physically and verbally abused, but He willingly took the punishment and did not fight back.

When Jesus faced Pilot, the man who would sentence Him to death, Jesus had his final opportunity to defend himself.

If he defended himself there was a good chance he would not have died.

Jesus instead obeyed the Father and took the punishment that He was lead to.

Jesus did not fight back.

He did not defend himself.

He willingly and obediently went to the Cross to be a sacrifice for your sin.

Transition question - Why was Christ so willing to go to the Cross?

Because of His purpose.

A. He was perfectly obedient to what the Father had for Him.

3. Jesus purpose was to bear the weight of my sin and make payment for it.

vs. 6, 8

B. The decision to go to the cross was made before the foundation of the world.

3. Jesus bore our sin to make payment for it.

vs. 6, 8

Isaiah 53:6-8

vs. 6, ... and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Jesus was stricken for our sins.

Stricken by the rods, the whip and the nails of The Cross.

Jesus was stricken by the Father

Is

The weight of the wrath of God reigned down on Christ on the cross.

Because our sin is eternally offensive to the holiness of God.

The eternal wrath of God against sin was poured out on His Son.

Transition -

There was a great purpose for this unimaginable sacrifice.

The great purpose is the forgiveness of your sins.

If you have trusted in what Jesus has done on the cross in faith, then the payment for sin is forgiven.

The payment for sin is a powerful payment.

It can cover the worst sin.

There may be sins of deep regret in your life.

Sins that you cannot forgive yourself for.

Know this… If you have fully trusted Christ...

The sins of ...

You stand forgiven before a great God.

You stand justified before God.

Your sins are no longer held against you.

Amidst the heaviness and anguish over our spiritual failures, we must rejoice in what Christ has done on our behalf.

Will you allow yourself in this moment to have peace and joy?

Will you in this moment take a spiritual breath of relief because the weight of your guilt is gone?

Will you this moment thank the Lord that your sins are no more.

Jesus takes away sin.

His purpose was to be the sin bearer and to remove the sin of those who trust Him.

So we take joy and comfort in...
