Sermon:
2 Peter 1:
For he who lacks these qualities
is blind or short - sighted - cannot see far off.
or short - sighted - cannot see far off.
having forgotten his purification from his former sins.
3 POSSIBILITIES OF INTERPRETATION:
a person can loose their salvation
immature christian that doesn’t realize that Christ’s death removed Adams sin
it is not possible to live a decent christian life if you do not realize that sin is not a problem in your life.
This does not make light of sin, but makes much of Christ.
What have you done to your evaluation of the death of Christ if you are living under the guilt and condemnation of sin.
The one who is not in vs5,6,7 of this chapter is the christian who is engrossed in trying to cover the sin issue in his life.
The question that you must ask here is: “is the death of Christ sufficient?” Jesus did a wonderful think and now it is up to you, no only demeans Christ but blasphemes the work of Christ.
Is that true my friends?
If your new creation can sin now, then it can sin in Heaven and that would be a mess.
We are either dependent upon Christ or not.
Do you recognize the present truth of the infinite value of the work of Christ.
Your sins are forgiven or they are not.
Confession is but a statement of belief.
The word is I believe you forgave my sin.
Why?
Because Christ did it, because God said it, not because you confessed it.
My saying it does not make that true, but I tell you, to come in agreement with God certainly does make all the difference in your life.
Therefore, brethren,
be all the more diligent (aorist imperative - command)
…rather than being stuck in the mire of your former sin…give the same diligence as you were instructed in chapter 5 to...
to make certain about His calling and choosing you;
Not that it was ever unsure to God…but to you...the word certain ought to be stable.
Calling - when you heard it
Choosing - before time
The point is that it is a finished transaction.
You did not become elect at a later point in time or at a time of your choosing.
I want you to be stable in this...
Do you know that God chose you before time began?
Are you certain in that?
Before time began you had the assurance of Christ choosing.
for as long as you practice these things, (the things of chapter 5-7)
you will never stumble
You could assume that this means go to hell…I don’t think so…I don’t think that you can stretch the text that far.
To fall doesn’t mean go to hell…the Greek word means to stumble.
Don’t you stumble my friends?
Certainly you don’t fall back towards hell…no…you stumble displaying that you fail to practice verse 5-7.
You stumble displaying that your not diligent in the things that you ought to be.
We stumble because we have the wrong affections, because we seek the wrong things.
We stumble displaying that we have not true love.
The word here for never is absolutely never.
You stumble recently my friends?
That’s because your not in the word of God enough.
That is because you’ve put family, friends, things, progress above Christ your Lord and Redeemer.
You stumble because you look not to the things above…that seems to far off.
Your far to busy with the now.
You my friends are short sighted.
Oh but pastor you tell me…you can have it all…the world and God.
or… you say…I don’t believe that God wouldn’t want me to have what this or that and I need to pursue it, and look at so and so who followed this path or this is how my family has always done it…i’ll be alright....

Cleverly devised - sophizo- to make wise/ tales - myths
If it’s not the word of God my friends, if it’s not God Himself…then it is just a myth…cleverly devised…promising to make you wise, but a promise that is a myth is of no value…its not true.
You want truth…set your affections above, keep on seeking the things above, the things of your faith…what is that…virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, piety, brotherly kindess and love and in these things show all diligence.
Diligence - the steady application of…it is to make it your buisness.
How many of you have alot of things that seem to be your buisness…you’ve got a spouse, children which means sports, groups, school....a job, a family, hobbies....we don’t just have one thing that is our competing buisness we’ve god a Mary Poppins bag full of things that we are seeking to make our buisness.
Well, what about God?
You cannot love him and love what we just listed.
You cannot have him be your buisness and treat all of those other things as though they are Lord running about to whatever they demand whenever.
Do you spend more time praying than doing?
No? Then you should not think yourself a steady person of Christ.
Do you spend more time seeking others than Christ?
Yes? Then you should not think yourself a steady person of Christ.
Do you spend more time learning the patterns, success, wisdom and myths of man and the world than the Holy Scriptures?
Yes…Then guess what - steady you are not.
But…if you are diligent in these things…Listen friends, I am setting you up here for something greater by reading to you this Word of God…something far greater....I’m talking Christ arose from the dead greater…Yes, if you are diligent in these things which we have discussed...
2 Peter 1:11
In this way (the way of diligence)
the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.
an entrance shall be ministered to you.
The deeper that we grow in the knowledge of our Lord…
the more diligent that we are in knowing our Savior,
The more that we make our faith our business we add the virtue (right thinking of God), knowledge (understanding of God), self control (the walking by the new man, the feeding of the Spirit of God rather than the quenching of it), perseverance, piety, brotherly kindness, and love...
the more that we are diligent in such, then the more that we know the mighty entrance that he has supplied unto you.
You cannot earn yourself a mighty entrance, but in Christ you have one.
Do you know it?
