THE THREE PARTS OF CALVARY
THE THREE PARTS OF CALVARY
The Top Three Church Services That Has Increased Church Attendance Are:
1. Easter
2. Mother’s Day
3. Christmas
It is a known fact that church attendance will increase for those particular services then any other. From a pastor perspective it might be the only chance to share the gospel to the lost.
I’ve been pastoring this church for nearly three years, this church has had it’s ups and downs, good times and bad times, happy days and sad days, but I can promise you, We have never strayed from preaching the gospel, or change our doctrine, or changed our stance to get people to visit our church.
We preach the true and only gospel: The Death, The Burial, and The Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This Easter Service is extra special to me, because today I will be Baptizing my youngest daughter, my baby girl. Three weeks ago my little girl accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior.
Baptizing her on the day Jesus raised from the dead has a new meaning for me. Because of our Lord Jesus Christ selfless sacrifice of His Precious Blood on the Cross of Calvary, I get to spend eternity with my baby girl.
This is what Easter is all about. Not Easter bunnies, colored eggs, chocolate candy. It’s about the Blood Sacrifice of the Lamb of God.
This morning I would like to share with Three Parts of Calvary.
The Promise of Calvary.
The Prophecy of Calvary.
The Fulfillment of Calvary.
I. The Promise of Calvary.
I. The Promise of Calvary.
We can find the promise of Calvary in the book of Genesis.
This is where it all began.
It starts off when God created man.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
: 26-
God gives man a commandment.
15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Genesis 2:
Let’s look at a few things in these two verses.
We see God’s commandment not to eat of the Tree of Good and Evil.
Genesis 3
We see the result of disobeying God.
Death.
There are two types of death that is being addressed.
Spiritual Death - The separation from God, because of sin.
Physical Death - is when our flesh dies and our conscious soul separates from the body, also a result of sin.
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Roman 12:
Because of sin we have an appointment with death
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Hebrews
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Sin entered the world through men.
Genesis 3:6-
We can see the results of sin.
Genesis 3:8-
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
We see three things about sin in these seven verses
Shame - When you sin
If you have any kind of a conscience,
You will feel a since of shame.
The Blame Game -
Not taking responsibly for your own actions.
When you sin, most blame other for their sins.
Separation from God - Because of sin,
The blame game.
We lost our relationship with God.
Now we see God’s Promise of Calvary.
Genesis 3:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
I want to break this verse down for you.
is known as the First Messianic Promise.
Which means the Promise of a Messiah.
A Saviour.
This verse is also known as the Protoevangelium.
Taken from the Greek word (Proto) meaning First.
(Evangeliun) meaning Good News or the Gospel.
Put it together you get (The first announcement of the Good News or the Gospel.
Before the fall of man, God walked and talked to man.
After the fall of man, we were separated from a personal relationship with God.
Lets break down
We needed, a bridge to get back to that personal relationship we lost with God before the fall.
Lets break down The Protoevangelium, (the Promise of Calvary)
Verse 15 tells us that Satan is our enemy.
He will do anything he can to get us to follow evil.
Satan hates God!
The Phrase “Thou (Satan) shalt bruise his (Jesus) heel”
Refers to Satan’s repeated attempts to defeat Jesus Christ during His life on the earth.
Before Jesus started His ministry, Satan tempted Jesus three time.
The Phrase “It (Jesus) shall bruise thy (Satan) head”
It foreshadows Satans defeat when Jesus Christ rose from the dead in VICTORY OVER SIN.
A bruise to the heel is not deadly, but a strike to the head is.
We can see God revealing His plan of Calvary in verse 15.
To defeat Satan.
Offer Salvation to the world, the Protoevangelium, the Good News, the Gospel
Through His Son, Jesus Christ, the Messianic Promise, the promise of a Messiah, a Saviour.
II. The Prophecy of Calvary.
II. The Prophecy of Calvary.
1 Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, And as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; And when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men; A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: And we hid as it were our faces from him; He was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned every one to his own way; And the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, Yet he opened not his mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, So he openeth not his mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: And who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living: For the transgression of my people was he stricken.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked, And with the rich in his death; Because he had done no violence, Neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, He shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; For he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, And he shall divide the spoil with the strong; Because he hath poured out his soul unto death: And he was numbered with the transgressors; And he bare the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah 53:1-12
This chapter of the Bible sums up what happens in the Four Gospels.
Genesis give us the Promise of Calvary.
Isaiah give us the Prophecy of Calvary.
And now we’re going to see the Fulfillment of Calvary.
III. The Fulfillment of Calvary.
III. The Fulfillment of Calvary.
Let’s look at the Fulfillment of Calvary.
As we look at this section of this message.
I want you to picture theses events in your mind.
I want you to listen to the words, then I will continue on with the message.

A. Last Sunday started what I call the Countdown to the Fulfillment of Calvary!
A. Last Sunday started what I call the Countdown to the Fulfillment of Calvary!
It started when Jesus entering Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, and within that Eight Day’s.
Jesus will be Arrested, Tried, Beaten, Sentence to Death, Died on the Cross, Buried, and Resurrected.
This morning I want us to visualize what took place within those Last Eight Day’s.
It’s important to know what Jesus did for us on that Cross of Calvary.
B. Let’s take a brief look in the chronological order of the Fulfillment of Calvary.
B. Let’s take a brief look in the chronological order of the Fulfillment of Calvary.
Jesus enters Jerusalem riding a donkey.
As he enters the people receive Him as royalty.
The people throw out palm leaves to the ground
The people shout out “Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.”
12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
John 12:
Jesus cleansed the temple of the money changers
12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
Matthew
Jesus having the Last Supper with His disciples and the beginning of His betrayal by His disciple Judas.
18 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.
19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
20 And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.
21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
26 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
Mark 14:18-
Jesus goes to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane, and is arrested by the chief priest and the elders.
36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
Matthew
Imagine the stress and pressure on Jesus’s faced as He prayed to His Father in the Garden.
39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
Matthew 26:
Jesus was in agony as He prayed in the garden.
Luke 22:
44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
When Jesus finish praying He was betrayed by a kiss and arrested.
47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.
49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
: 47-
He was taken and tried 4 different times.
The High Priest
PontiusPilate
King Herod
Pontius Pilate
During those trials Jesus suffered greatly, as no other man has ever suffered.
He was beaten
His beard was plucked out
A crown of thorns was shoved down on His head
He was flogged with a whip
This whip had bone, and metal embedded in it.
Every strike ripped and tore His flesh open
Blood pouring out of Him
He was so, badly beaten you could not recognize Him as a man.
Jesus was sentence to die on the cross.
14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
John 19:14-
While hanging on the cross Jesus still showed His love for us.
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
Luke 23
Jesus took on all the sins of the world on Hisself as He hung on that cross.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Matthew 27:
God can’t look upon sin.
Jesus took His last breath and dies on the cross for your sins, and mine, He was the perfect blood sacrifice, the Lamb of God.
28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
John 19:
Jesus was buried in a tomb.
38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
Now we see the Fulfillment of Calvary.
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Luke 24:2-
We see that Jesus accends back to Heaven fulfilling all that was promise of God in
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
Acts 1:9-
C. There one last Prophecy to be fulfilled and that’s the Jesus’s Return.
C. There one last Prophecy to be fulfilled and that’s the Jesus’s Return.
We don’t know when Jesus will return, but we do know That God keeps His promises!
Matthew 24:
36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
God is going to say to His Son, “Son, go and get my Children.”
Are you ready.
Are you prepared.
