One of the great minds of the twentieth century belonged to Lord Bertrand Russell, a philosopher. He wrote,
Man is the product of causes which had no prevision [foresight] of the end they were achieving. . . . His origin, his growth, his hopes and fears, his loves and his beliefs, are but the outcome of accidental collocations (the act or result of placing or arranging together) of atoms. . . . No fire, no heroism, no intensity of thought and feeling, can preserve an individual life beyond the grave. . . . All these things, if not quite beyond dispute, are yet so nearly certain that no philosophy that rejects them can hope to stand.”19
Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”
John 12:31-
The connection of the events
While the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ are separate events they were all needed. Each one is connected to the other and needed the other
While the death, resurrection, ascension, and return of Christ (yet to take place) are separate events they are all connected and needed. All these events will bring us to the final event which is the new heaven and new earth and new city ()
The reason for Peter’s message was explaining the ability given to followers of Jesus Christ to share the wonderful works of God in the languages of the crowds gathered at Jerusalem
And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?
Acts 2:5-
So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”
Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”
Acts 2:
He begins by taking them to book of Joel which foretells the coming of the Holy Spirit
The passage tells us this will happen in the last days
‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
The passage tells us the main purpose for the the Holy Spirit’s coming is so that people might be saved
And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.’
He continues his message by revealing the reason the Holy Spirit has been sent at this particular time
Peter would have been drawing upon the teachings of Jesus Christ about the sending of the Holy Spirit
Jesus taught about the Holy Spirit during His last Passover in the upper room
But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.
“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
“But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Jesus continued to teach about the Holy Spirit after His resurrection
“A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father.”
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:
John 16:4
Peter was proclaiming the first gospel message
This message was being preached from someone who was filled with the Holy Spirit
Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
Paul’s summarized the gospel in
Acts 4:1-2
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.
Acts 4:13
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinth
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
The gospel is the central message of the church
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
The focal point of history
The focal point of history
History prior to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ was preparing for this day
The promise in the garden of Eden
The call of Abraham and the covenant God made with Abraham
Now the Lord had said to Abram:
“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”
John 8:
The history of the nations was determined by this day
The Chosen nation’s history, Israel
The Chosen nation’s history, Israel

John 4:22
You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.
You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.
John 4:22
The great nations’ history
“I was watching in the night visions,
And behold, One like the Son of Man,
Coming with the clouds of heaven!
He came to the Ancient of Days,
And they brought Him near before Him.
Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.
Daniel 7:
Daniel’s 70 weeks
History since the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ has been impacted by this day
The history of the future has been determined by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ ()
The history of the future has been determined by this day ()
The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
“Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!”

Revelation 4:
And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.”
Revelation 5:
God was in total control and directing all events throughout history to bring about this greatest event
God used the free will of man to accomplish His plan
The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
“Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!”
It was a real time in history when the work of Trinity fulfilled the salvation foretold in the Old Testament
Revelation 4:
His death was certain
And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.”
However, death could not hold Him
God was in total control in directing all events throughout history to bring about this greatest event. It was the ‘accidental collocations’ of events
God used the free will of man to accomplish His purposes
They had witnessed His life
They had consented to His death
More importantly God’s sovereignty was involved in atoning work of His Son ,
God was the One who sent His Son
His birth
But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Galatians
God was involved in His life and ministry
And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”
John 12
God was the One who sacrificed His Son for sin
God was the One who raised His Son up
God used the free will of man to accomplish His purpose
They had witnessed His life
John 10:17-
Hebrews 2
“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
They had consented to His death

Peter continues using the scriptures to explain the resurrection of Jesus Christ
Peter is attempting to confirm that Jesus of Nazareth is the Lord’s Messiah because of His resurrection
He quotes passage he attributes to David
David was used by God to write many of the Psalms
Some of these Psalms contained messianic passages. Passages that not only referred to something in David’s personal life but went beyond his life to the life of the Messiah
It was through David the Messiah was to come
“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
2 Samuel 7:12-
David was used by God to write many of the Psalms
Some of these Psalms contained messianic passages. Passages that not only referred to something in David’s personal life but went beyond his life to the life of the Messiah
Peter’s purpose for using this passage was to confirm Jesus of Nazareth as the Lord’s Messiah
He states it was written by David
He states it was written by David
Peter is using this passage along with the fact of Jesus’ resurrection to confirm Jesus messiahship
In explaining this passage Peter begins by stating the obvious. David had died, was buried and his body has decayed. The proof of this was they all knew where David’s gravesite was
Peter is using this passage along with the fact of Jesus’ resurrection to confirm Jesus messiahship
He begins by affirming what they all knew that David had died, was buried, and his tomb could still be visited today. His body had decayed and went back to dust
Peter’s logic is that since this passage could not refer to David it had to be speaking of David’s future seed, the Messiah
He calls David a prophet and that David knew the promise of God concerning his own descendent which would be the Lord’s Messiah
“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
2 Samuel 7:
David understood this promise would mean the resurrection of Jesus Christ as stated in 2:27
Peter states this Jesus (the same Jesus he has been talking about) was the fulfillment of David’s prophecy by being raised from the dead by God. Peter declares it to be true because and he and the 119 there with him saw Jesus alive

Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
And they remembered His words. Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them. But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also,
This event confirmed the identity of Jesus
This event confirmed the identity of Jesus
He credits David with being a prophet and for knowing the promise God swore to him
God swore to him that the Messiah would come from his loins and sit on David’s throne. David’s faith in God assured him God would keep this promise
David therefore spoke as a prophet knowing that the promise of God guaranteed the Messiah would sit upon his throne forever thus making necessary the resurrection of the Messiah. he therefore wrote of the resurrection in the passage Peter shared
Peter concludes this thought by applying the truth of the passage to ‘This Jesus’
Jesus’ resurrection was made possible by the power of God

Jesus’ resurrection had many eyewitnesses

No we’re not under the influence of alcohol but under the influence of Holy Spirit. What you see and hear is the Holy Spirit being poured out
Poured out = cause to flow out or cause to fully experience
John 7:37-
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
The reason the Holy Spirit is here, the Messiah Jesus has taken His seat at the right hand of His Father a place of authority. He has sent the promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me;

In the context he was speaking to the Jew first
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
In the growth of the church it would come to include the Gentile too
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
Acts 10:44
If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?”
When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.”

who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Revelation 21:22
And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.
