He is Risen!.... wait for it. (Explain if you have to…)
He is Risen.... He is Risen… challenge the kids to respond every time they here “He is risen”
Turn in your bibles to John chapter 20. were going to be looking at the first 18 verse of this chapter. The gospel of John, or the gospel according to John, was written john, of the 12 disciples. John was part of Jesus’ inner circle. Yes he traveled with an assortment of people, but he had 12 men he poured into that were being groomed and trained to do what Jesus was doing. This was normal in the life of a Rabbi. You would pour into disciples who would hopefully, continue with their own teaching ministry after being trained by a reputable rabbi. Of the 12 disciples, Jesus had 3 in particular that he spent even more time with than the other 12: Peter, James, and John. John was the author of this book. He also didn’t write this account until he was very old. He was in his late 60’s or even 70’s when he got around to writing this account. And he hits the highlights. He even says at the close of this gospel in chapter 21, if I were to write about every amazing thing and miraculous thing Jesus did, there wouldn’t be enough books in the world to contain all the stories. John writes about the memorable moments. There was probably nothing more memorable than what john write about here in John chapter 20
Memorable Moments
Memorable moments have a way of searing themselves into our memories. All of us have memories that when we think of them, we can’t help but be overwhelmed with the imagery, the sights, and even smells come rushing back to us when we thing of memories of loved ones or specific & significant moments in our lives. Just for fun, Here are a few of mine:
Rocket’s Championship(s)
Mighty Ducks Win the Jr. Goodwill Games
Children being born - I remember every hospital room
Children being born
Astros World Series Win - What it felt like - Harvey
For John - The Resurrection and everything he wrote about are memories like this. Memories that shaped who he was as a person and ones that he would not forget. This is what he writes about that Sunday morning...
John 20:1-18
1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”
3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb.
4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there,
7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.
8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;
9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.
12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.
13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
An Unlikely Witness
This is the story of the resurrection...
In the first 10 verses we get a unique insight into the relationship between John and Peter
In the first 10 verses we get a unique insight into the relationship between John and Peter
This is how we know it was a memory that is seared into John’s mind
Even after his good friend Peter died, he’s still telling the story abuout how he out ran Peter to the tomb
Vs. 4, vs. 8
They were so dissappointed, regardless of what John writes in vs. 8-9, they just go back home.
...it is also the story of Mary Magdalene.
Who is Mary Magdalene?
Her name suggests she is from Magdala (in Galilee)
Jesus met her in Galilee and cast 7 demons out of her () the she joined Jesus’ band of disciples, traveling everywhere with them
possibly even the sinful women of ; who washed Jesus’ feet with her hair
Here in this passage she is credited as the 1st witness of Jesus’ resurrection
Why is she an unlikely witness
She’s a social and political Outsider
She’s a woman
She’s Jewish
women in the ancient world were not allowed to serve as witnesses in court
Her word / her witness doesn’t cary much weight
She’s got a questionable past
She’s not anyone’s first choice to represent them
Jesus Called her by name
Mary & the disciples just don’t understand what is happening.
John 20:
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.
12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.
13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
If something looks like a duck, and walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck… based on everything you know and experienced… It’s probably a duck
Based on Mary’s experience, she’d never seen someone raise themselves from the dead
Even Lazarus, when he was raised from the dead, He didn’t raise himself
Lazarus was called by Jesus to come forth… Jesus rose in his own power
Lazarus came out of the tomb bound and covered… Jesus’ grave clothes were left in the grave
Lazarus stunk… Jesus’ body was whole
Based on her experience, Mary assumes somebody stole Jesus’ body.
John 20:14-
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
John
Theres a familiarity, a recognition when someone you know and love calls your name. I don’t know if it’s the timbre of their voice, the way the emphasize or deemphasize certain syllables. there’s just something about how a loved ones voice sounds when they say your name
Many people call me Sam. A lot of my family does, but there’s just something different and immediately recognizable when my wife calls me sam.
When Mary hears Jesus say her name, she’s shocked, thrilled, amazed. Her sadness is gone. She realizes… He is risen...
Jesus gives her a purpose
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
Real quick -
Do not cling to me. Jesus is telling her. Don’t get used to seeing me around. He’s not trying to tell her, “don’t touch me because you’ll defile me somehow.” He’s telling her. Don’t get used to having me around. Yes “He is risen”… but its not the plan for him to stick around.
Go to my brothers - Jesus refers to his disciples and followers as brothers.
they/we’re not his servants/slaves to be commanded and
He forgives them for abandoning him
My father and your father -He welcomes them into the family of God.
What Jesus’ death and resurrection has given us a new identity based on a new standing and relationship with God. Where before Jesus would talk about His heveanly father, he know refers to our father, we are his brothers, we are adopted and welcomed into the family of God because of his death and ressurection!!!!!
Who is the bearer of this great news?!?!?! Who is the first witness of this message?!?!?!?!
Marry Magdalene
Our Story isn’t so different than Mary’s
Jesus give sMary a task
“go to my prothers and say to them...”
Jesus makes her a witness
Where is he ascending… “to my father and your father… to my God and your God”
Go tell about what you’ve seen and experienced.
Where is he ascending… “to my father and your father… to my God and your God”
In Jesus’ death and ressurection, we’re adopted into the family of God
Gospel presentation here.
Our Story isn’t so different than Mary’s
“go to my prothers and say to them
We are unlikely witnesses
We are Social/Political Outsiders
this is becoming more apparent everyday
we shouldn’t fear this. we should be encouraged and embolded b/c this is where the church has been throughout history
We are people of a questionable past
We’re nobody’s first choice
We have been called by name
We have been given the task of telling about what we’ve seen and experienced.
“I have seen the Lord”
