Walk in with cross beam.
live for righteousness
In the very beginning the bible we learn that God created, he created the heavens and the earth.  He created the vegetation, plants and trees.  Trees just like the ones you see here.
Set cross beam down.
Explain , he gives the whole law to Adam.  The whole law consisted of 1 law.  Just 1, not super complex theology.
Genesis 2:16–17 NIV
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
Then God creates Eve. They were there together, they were naked and felt no shame. There was no barriers, no separation.  They were together in paradise. That takes us to Genesis chapter 3.
The serpent temps Eve, who in her defense wasn’t there when the rule was given. So we don’t know did Adam overstate the rule or did she take that upon herself?  Either way they added to the rule of God to make it more restrictive than God intended.
Genesis 3:1–3 NIV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
(,
They both eat it, and see they are naked.  So they do what we do when we are exposed, they hide.  When we are exposed we do the very same thing, we think we need to hide from God. So they hide and try to cover their shame with a fig leaf.  There is a reason we don’t have clothes made of fig leaves, they don’t work.
So we see the first sacrifice in the bible, an innocent animal was slaughtered to make clothes for Adam and Eve.
Play lamb video 1:10
And there starts this theme of atonement that we see time and time again, blood being shed to cover over our shame and sin.
We see this same theme of atonement in ,  God tells his people to take a lamb without defect and sacrifice it, take the blood on the doorpost and the blood will cover over you and the angel of death with pass over that house. Cook it and celebrate for the next day you will be delivered from Slavery. Celebrate because God will set you free.  Jews to this day celebrate passover, because God saved his people. Right where they were, in bondage, in slavery and unable to save themselves.
tells us about this Scapegoat, it took on the sins of the people and was set loose in the wild. The sins of the people had to be atoned for.  the high priest, had to do this to go behind the curtain and into the holy of holy and then only once a year, after the shedding of blood. Year after year, sacrifice after sacrifice.
(, NIV84)
Hebrews 9:22 NIV
22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
The writer of Hebrews goes on to explain that Jesus was the once for all sacrifice for our sins.
The writer of Hebrews goes on to explain that Jesus was the once for all sacrifice for our sins. “Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.” (, NIV84)Jesus came to give up his life and set us free.  Atonement. He lived a perfect life. So that he could be sacrificed for me and for you. He was the perfect Lamb of God. “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (, NIV84)Even Herod found him innocent.  “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.”” (, NIV84)But they demanded he be crucified and he was flogged and then send to be crucified. Being flogged in and of its self was horrible, many died from being flogged. Jesus was so weak he couldn’t carry the cross beam of the cross similar to what I walked in with. It was about the length of 7 football fields, a few hundred feet in elevation, (where would this be from the building) yet he was beaten so badly that he couldn’t carry the cross, they grabbed someone from the crowd to carry it. Then he was crucified. Nails in the cross. Most die from ephixiation   live for righteousness
Hebrews 9:27–28 NIV
27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Jesus came to give up his life and set us free.  Atonement. He lived a perfect life. So that he could be sacrificed for me and for you. He was the perfect Lamb of God.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (, NIV84)
John 1:29 NIV
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
There were 1000’s of people following him. he had performed miracles and raised the dead. Touched the lepers, restored sight to the blind. fed 1000’s. And then everyone turned on him. They all turned their backs. We see in , Pilate knows he should let him go, but he gives into the crowd.
Even Herod found him innocent.  “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.”” (, NIV84)
Luke 23:14–16 NIV
14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.”
But they demanded he be crucified and he was flogged and then send to be crucified. Being flogged in and of its self was horrible, many died from being flogged. Jesus was so weak he couldn’t carry the cross beam of the cross similar to what I walked in with tonight.
It was about the length of 7 football fields, a few hundred feet in elevation, It’s about the same as the distance from the arvada center to here. yet he was beaten so badly that he couldn’t carry the cross, they grabbed someone from the crowd to carry it. Then he was crucified.
t was about the length of 7 football fields, a few hundred feet in elevation, (where would this be from the building) yet he was beaten so badly that he couldn’t carry the cross, they grabbed someone from the crowd to carry it. Then he was crucified.
Nails in the cross.
Isaiah 53:5 NIV
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Jesus came to give us healing. He came to meet us where we are and cover over our sins and make atonement for them.
Remember how we talked about the Israelites in Exodus? They took the lamb, sacrificed it, took the blood and put it on the door frame. And then sat down with the family to celebrate. It was a seal of their obedience to God and his promise to save them.
In the same Jesus gives us a seal of his mercy and love.
Colossians 2:11–15 NIV
11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Jesus triumphed over death, hell and the grave at the cross. And he freely offers you that same freedom, that same power that raised Jesus from the dead!
It doesn’t matter where you have been or what you have done. No matter how broken hearted you are, Jesus says come to me and find mercy, come to me to be rescued. If you have strayed he is calling you as well. Come to the cross to find healing and triumph in Jesus Christ.
As we raise the cross I want you to listen to the words of this song. And hear Jesus calling you to come to him.
Colossians 2:11–12 NIV
11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
Galatians 3:26–28 NIV
26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:26 NIV
26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,
I might use these if there is time.
1 Peter 2:21–25 NIV
21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
1 Peter 2:24–25 NIV
24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV
21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
God made Jesus become “sin” so that we could become “righteous”
Perhaps this is why Jesus cried out, “my God my God, why have you forsaken me” on the cross right before he died. Jesus felt the nearly unbearable pain of separation from his Father in heaven for the first time in all eternity.
That is the price Jesus paid. Why again did he do all this?
Romans 5:6–8 NIV
6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
A demonstration of his love; he would do anything to have a relationship with you!
A statement of the seriousness of sin; your sins necessitated this sacrifice
It is so important to personalize the cross—not just for man or the world, but for you! The grace of God is truly amazing! It is an incredible gift that came at an incredible price.
When baptized, one is actually sharing in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus
Romans 6:1–8 NIV
1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
Baptism is the point a person “puts on Christ.”
One is buried with Christ in baptism and raised through their faith. It is essential that there be faith at that point.
