Video- What’s so good about Good Friday?

Last week
John 19:16 NASB95
So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.
Pilate is a conflicted man.
He has done all that is conceivable in his mind to appease the Jews.
He has offered them Barabbas or Jesus.
They want Jesus dead. Let Barabbas go!
He has beaten Jesus unjustly to the point where Jesus is a pitiful sight to behold.
But even after, the the bloodthirsty Jews in unbridled sin and anger cry for Jesus to be crucified.
Crucify! Crucify!
Pilate feels as if he has no other choice.
But Pilate does have a choice, just as the Jews have a choice.
Pilate, in his ignorance, chooses to fear the Jews rather than the King of Truth.
The Jews, in the knowledge of all that God has done, choose to cry for Jesus to be crucified.
And thats what happened.
John 19:
John 19:16–17 NASB95
So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified. They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.
John 19:18–22 NASB95
There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’ ” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”
Couple things here.
They are in public place where they crucify.
The reason for this was twofold.
Shame. The Romans were artists in public shame. This is what they did. They wanted to humiliate anyone who would dare oppose Caesar.
Horror to other criminals. The crucified in public to provide a spectacle so that other people would look and essentially know, “This is what happens to people who oppose Rome.” Sometimes they would let people hang for days to send a message.
This particular day, they are crucifying three people.
Two men who both had done things worthy of death.
And again we see this happens as God said it would happen through his prophets.
Isaiah in says this:
Isaiah 53:12 NASB95
Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.
He is quite literally counted among the transgressors.
Pilate would even write the supposed sin that Jesus committed when he wrote- Jesus the Nazarene- King of the Jews.
This was common practice. They would put the reason for the death sentence.
Bu the Jews don’t like what Pilate wrote so they protest.
They don’t want Jesus to be their king or even pictured as such.
But Pilate is tired of being manipulated by the Jews, so he leaves it.
I think this serves two purposes.
Pilate’s sinful purposes of humiliating the Jews and Jesus.
To actually proclaim the truth of who Jesus was. Jesus is King and he is dying because he is King.
It is through Jesus’s death that he will be exalted, but he must first be humiliated.
And there are many people watching this.
John gives a reports of a few people.
John 19:23-
Soldiers-
John 19:23–25 NASB95
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
They are dividing the clothing of Jesus.
This was customary.
The executioners got the clothes of th eprisoners they were executing.
But more so than custom it is to fulfill Scripture, because after dividing the clothes as best they can, they gamble over the last piece of clothing because they cant tear it to piece because its one piece.
And this fulfills Scripture, specifically Psalm 22:18
Psalm 22:18 NASB95
They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.
I know this may seem like a minimal point at this point, but all of this was to fulfill prophecy and Scripture.
This matters because God promised it would happen.
It speaks to the validity of the Old Testament. The validity of the New Testament and the validity of prophets and apostles.
Jesus’ death happened ACCORDING to the Scriptures even to the smallest detail.
ACCORDING to the Scriptures.
John simply records what he sees.
and we see a contrast from the acts of the soldiers, who really couldn’t care less who Jesus was, and four ladies.
John 19:25 NASB95
Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
John 19:25–27 NASB95
Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
John 1
And make no mistake these women are heartbroken at the events that are taking place. These women would have writhed in pain and sorrow while the rest of the crowd cried Crucify him.
These women are not there at the cross to mock and ridicule and to humiliate him.
These women are there to mourn, to provide what kind of care they could for Jesus in that moment.
But Jesus cares for them, specifically his own mother.
This is quite remarkable, that as Jesus hangs dying, that he is making provision for His mother.
But not only her. But for us as well. Look what he says.
John 19:26–27 NASB95
When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
Here we see that the cross is about provision.
Jesus is about provision. He is making sure she is taken care of by a believer. (Siblings not believer yet)
This is what his life was about. This is what His death was about.
Look in verse 28-30
John 19:28–30 NASB95
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
John 19:28 NASB95
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.”
Jesus knows whats been prophesied.
He knows whats been done, and everything down to the last detail is line.
Jesus hour has come and it goes precisely as prophesied.
And he knows this.
He says I am thirsty. And even this fulfills Scripture.
is a messianic Psalm that speaks very clearly about things of the cross.
Psalm 22
Psalm 22:15 NASB95
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death.
Even a matter so small as his thirst, is predicted and carried out to the smallest detail. And this is how it had to be.
Jesus doesn’t procure our salvation apart from perfection.
Jesus does exactly what the Father had planned exactly how the Father had planned it.
And he is thirsty.
He ought to be.
He lost an inordinate amount of blood.
the sheer effort it took to breathe on the cross would have exhausted him.
He’s thirsty
So the soldiers give Jesus some sour wine.
John 19:29–30 NASB95
A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
John 19:29 NASB95
A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.
John 19:28–29 NASB95
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.
Jesus takes what he can from the sour wine, and with one last statement he says the most meaningful statement for my life and for your life if you are His.
And then we come to one of the most meaningful statements made in all of history.
John 19:30 NASB95
Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
It is finished. In Greek - Tetelestai.
These words that come out of Jesus’s mouth is the single greatest statement made by any man.
It is finished.
But what is finished?
Jesus has actually paid for the sins of all those who will put their faith in him.
1 Peter 1:17–18 NASB95
If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,
But what is finished?
1 Peter 1:18–19 NASB95
knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
The atonement is finished. (Jesus has paid for the sins of His people)
The perfect life of Jesus is complete. (He has been obedient even to death on the cross).
The plan of God is complete.
This is the moment of victory in seemingly what looks like a moment of defeat.
Jesus has drank the cup of God’s wrath and he hasn’t left a drop for any of us. He has absorbed it all.
Because hear me out church, The atonement is finished, but Jesus is not.
When he cries out “It is finished,” he is not by any means waving the white flag of defeat. When he cries it is finished, he is sounding the trumpet of victory for every believer across the ages.
And more so than any anthem we sing for a country, more so than any chant we say, sing, shout for a team, more so than any song or artists we may follow, more so than any pledge we’ve ever taken. More so than any of that. These three words should be what we truly find joy and victory in.
These words should be our glory
It is finished.
This is the moment of victory in seemingly what looks like a moment of defeat.
Because the fact is, The atonement is finished, but Jesus is not.
HE has paid for MY sin.
Oh, what is that cross on the back of Christ? My sins. Oh, what is that thorny crown on the head of Christ? My sins. Oh, what is the nail in the right hand and that other in the left hand of Christ? My sins. Oh, what is that spear in the side of Christ? My sins. What are those nails and wounds in the feet of Christ? My sins. With a spiritual eye I see no other engine tormenting Christ, no other Pilate, Herod, Annas, Caiaphas, condemning Christ, no other soldiers, officers, Jews or Gentiles doing execution on Christ, but only sin. Oh, my sins, my sins, my sins!
Isaac Ambrose

And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

Pay attention to the wording here.
HE gave up HIS Spirit. Jesus is the one in control here. And this matters because this is what he has said.
John 10:17–18 NASB95
“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
John 10:18 NASB95
“No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
This is what Jesus said in .
John 10:17–18 NASB95
“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
This is why Jesus came.
The giver of Life gives up His life so that he may give life to us.
No one took it from him. He gave up His Spirit. He died. It is finished. But again, the atonement is finished Jesus is not.
Read with me the ending of
John 19:31–42 NASB95
Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.” And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.” After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
And of course, like many times before and like many times after, the body is left to stay.
But remember what Jesus said.
Mark 8:31 NASB95
And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Luke 9:22 NASB95
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”
Matthew 17:22 NASB95
And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men;
It is finished, but Jesus isn’t.
They lay him there, but he won’t be there long.
Today we can celebrate the reality of the death of Christ because of the reality of the resurrection of Christ.
Because of the resurrection, the cross matters for our lives.
Application
Those of you who are believers this morning, My encouragement to you this morning is to look to the cross and be assured that it is only by Christ’s obedience and His finished work that you are acceptable in the sight of the Father. Cherish Jesus Christ and what He has done in His crucifixion and resurrection. Cling to Christ with all you have, because make no mistake, he is all you have. Trust in him.
Application:
Repent- We cannot look upon the truth of the cross and come away rightly doing any thing else but hating our sin.
Faith- He finished the work. Not you. Not me. Forsake the confidence you have in yourselves and listen to to the Son of God when he says it is finished.
Prayer- The cross opens up our access to the throne of God, but it also should motivate us to go there often.
Holiness- Let us look to the cross as the motivation for our daily living inside of Christ.
Comfort- Every pain and evil, and sickness and death, hardship and persecution has been dealt with by the cross and resurrection of Jesus. Take comfort today knowing that he has shouldered all of it that we may live comforted through our difficulties. Through His cross, He has guaranteed a painless, tearless, deathless, future. Take comfort and find victory in the cross today.
