Introduction (Pray at Beginning)
Introduction (Pray at Beginning)
Finishing up the book of Mark.
it has been almost 4 months,
We have seen miracles like feeding thousands of people, healings, casting out demons, and we have seen a girl raised from the dead.
We have looked at teachings, like deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me.
The book was written by John Mark, who was a source of tension between Paul and Barnabas in the book of Acts, was somebody who Paul later wanted with him, who served with Peter for a time, and whose parents were owners of the “Upper Room” where the last supper was held. And Mark is believed to be the young man who followed the disciples into the garden of Gathsemane only to have his clothes ripped off and run home naked when Jesus was arrested.
Last week we went from the last supper and communion to the cross.
Today - He is Risen!
We went through the crucifixion last week, what is was, how it happened.
This week, we will look at the death and resurrection of Jesus.
33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.,ay 34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”,az 35 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “See, he’s calling for Elijah.” 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink, and said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.” 37 Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”, 40 There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem. 42 When it was already evening, because it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath), 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. 44 Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had already died. 45 When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph. 46 After he bought some linen cloth, Joseph took him down and wrapped him in the linen. Then he laid him in a tomb cut out of the rock and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.

THE BURIAL OF JESUS
16:1-8 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they could go and anoint him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb at sunrise. 3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?” 4 Looking up, they noticed that the stone—which was very large—had been rolled away. 5 When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side; they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they put him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there just as he told you.’ ” 8 They went out and ran from the tomb, because trembling and astonishment overwhelmed them. And they said nothing to anyone, since they were afraid.

Jesus Had to Die
Jesus Had to Die
Jesus’s death paid a debt that we owed.
Illustrate with how I like to pay my way… I get awkward when I receive things.
There is a debt that every person owes.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The wrath of God was poured out on Jesus… Wasn’t just that his back was turned, that there was silence.
It is finished… price has been paid, but the wrath of God was satisfied!
We are not saved from our sins, we are saved from the wrath of God because of our sins.
Jesus died on the cross for the sake of the elect.
The curtain was torn...
37 Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

We have access to the father…
25 Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them.
25 Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them.
Now through Christ… not an earthly man, not an image or idol that was created by human hands,
but by Christ, we can enter into the Holiness of God, into his presence and speak and worship.
Jesus Had to Rise
Jesus Had to Rise
He Had to Rise
The resurrection was physical… not just theoretical
No a myth to learn from or a story to feel good about, lets get more candy!
this is true historically...
this is true right now...
Jesus did not rise from the dead only to die again later.
can you imagine those that were raised from the dead in the Bible only to be sent back here and then have to die again.
What would it say about the power of God, to say that He was able to rise from the grave, only to die again later.
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they could go and anoint him.
Sabbath was over on Saturday at 6PM, would have ran from Friday 6PM - Saturday 6PM. So Saturday, they go and buy the stuff, prepare it that night, so that they can go early the next day put the spices on the body.

The Resurrection shows Jesus is the Son of God
Christian Standard Bible Chapter 1
3 concerning his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David,f according to the flesh 4 and was appointed to be the powerful Son of God according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection of the dead.
This was not just any man who died on the cross
He had to be fully man to fulfill the law, yet, He was fully God to defeat death and the tomb.
7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there just as he told you.’ ”

Paul speaks of this as if everyone should know this.
He references the prophets and the OT.
The messiah, anointed one of the OT was known to be from God. Yet he was from the line of David.
You can read in several places in the OT to learn about this.

If Christ has not been raised, our faith is worthless
17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 18 Those, then, who have fallen asleep in Christ have also perished. 19 If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone.

Our hope is not in a full grave…
I see different memes on the internet that almost mock the different religions out there.
their leaders are dead and you can look into their graves.
but shouldn’t we hurt for them. we know that their destination is Hell. That they are going to have an eternity of torment.
Paul is saying, that is us, if Jesus is not who we believed him to be.
if there is not resurrection, then he is not God, if He is not God, we are all in trouble.
Praise God.... The tomb is empty. We can celebrate the hope we have in the resurrection of Christ!
We Must Respond
We Must Respond
Two responses to the empty tomb
Disbelief - it is a funny thing… we can say that we believe, but we can tell if we believe by the way that we live.
It never happened - ask to look at it again with an open mind
Either simple disbelief
believe the story is simply fable, bible is not to be read literally
Generics… This is more dangerous. You might say that you believe…
Maybe you say you believe in God, but you never really thought about Jesus being him, you just know that there is one out there...
You call yourself a Christian, well because we live in America… this is Kansas, what else would we be?
Maybe you even have felt guilty once and a while and vow to do more…
Live for Jesus
Go to church more
All to never really see their life change
All of this is a disbelief… you do not trust in Jesus for everything, you rely on yourself and you live as if there is no God.
Illustrate with a kid eating 10 tacos…
I do not really care, i may watch if he tries and I am there, do I believe, sure,
even if that kid cannot eat that many, somewhere there is a kid that can.
That is not what the bible calls belief…
Belief
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
speak quickly about the last 12 verses in Mark… may be inspired, may not, not sure enough to preach like it is the word of God, but there is a truth that is in there
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
There is a lot of people, denominations that misunderstand this verse. So you must be baptized to be saved.
This is not saying you must be baptized to be saved...
but that your belief in Christ is one that leads to action.
This you will be able to test,
are you led to repentance, sharing your faith, loving people?
My desire today is not that you respond by trying harder… or by doing better.
My prayer is that you repent, draw nearer to God and submit to him.
Give up and allow him to guide your life!
