Luke 24:1–11 NIV84
1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

The Tomb is Empty

The women that had stayed while Jesus was crucified were the women that saw where Jesus was buried . He was buried in the borrowed tomb of Joseph of Arimethea. Nicodemus who had come to visit Jesus at night helped bury Jesus.

The women returned to the tomb where they personally witnessed Jesus being buried.

They knew a large stone had sealed the tomb, and on the way they wondered how they would get in the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus with spices per the customs.

When the women arrived they saw the stone rolled away.

They entered the tomb but the body was not there. Two angels came and stood beside them. The women fell to the ground, and the angels said: “Why do you look for the living amongst the dead? He is not here. He is risen!”
The angels said. Don’t you remember he said he must be delivered into the hands of sinful men to be crucified, and on the third day be raised again.

THEN THEY REMEMBERED HIS WORDS

The women went to tell the 11, but they did not believe the women.... They thought they were speaking nonsense.

Peter Runs To The Tomb

Luke 24:12 NIV84
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
Upon hearing the news that the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty, Peter and John ran to the tomb. John’s gospel tells us, he arrived first but stayed at the entrance of the tomb. Peter, however goes and discovers the linen cloths Jesus had been wrapped in. He leaves the tomb, wondering to himself what had happened.

Road To Emmaus

Luke 24:13–35 NIV84
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?” “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

Jesus calls these two men: slow of heart to believe.

Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us?

He opened the scripture to us.... we understood the Story of Scripture

They recognized Jesus when he broke the bread and gave it to them. I think it was because they saw the scars.

Jesus appears to His disciples

Luke 24:36–49 NIV84
36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence. 44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

Jesus shows up and they are frightened because they think they are seeing a ghost.

Touching me he said, a ghost does not have flesh and bones. Jesus rose again in flesh and blood, resurrected flesh and blood.

He later ask them, Do you have anything to eat?

Was Jesus hungry? Maybe not, but it was important for them to see him eat in their presence. That is how they knew He was risen.

He opened the minds of the disciples, and showed them repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached to all nations.

The disciples preached the reality of the resurrection.

Acts 3:14–16 NIV84
You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.
Look at Peter preaching

the reality of the resurrection life is that a man who was lame from birth was healed

and they could plainly see this
Look what Peter says in front of the leaders who put he and John in Jail
(NIV84)
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
Acts 2:32 NIV84
God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.
Did you see this? This is the message.... God has raised Jesus to life and made him both Lord and Christ.
Romans 8:11 NIV84
And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

I want you to think about the reality of the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead living in you.

The women that witnessed the resurrection were witnesses to the very end of Jesus life. They were there seeing Him flogged, whipped to the point of death. They saw him nailed to the cross and heard him cry out with His last breath: “It is Finished.” They saw the roman soldier thrust the spear in his side and the gushing of water and blood from the wound. They were there present when Nicodemus and Joseph laid his tortured, lifeless body in the tomb.
But, on the third day, the Holy Spirit breathed and the Resurrected Life overcame death, hell and the grace. The stone was rolled away and Jesus is Alive.
Now what if that same Spirit comes alive in you? You would live the resurrected life.

Look closely at this verse… Paul says the Spirit will give life to your mortal body.

The promise of the Gospel offers more than the chance to escape hell and go to heaven some day. Heaven is awesome and hell is horrible. No person should doubt the reality of heaven and hell. But I want you to know God’s goodness is not limited to heaven. The Spirit of God that dwells in you is ready to quicken your mortal body today.

The resurrected life is to be lived in the here and now and in the days to come.

Today is the day of salvation.

Living The Resurrected Life

Acts 4:8–10 NIV84
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
