                                                         The Resurrection

                                               Ho 13:14                 Part 1 of 3                            3/9/08 a.m.

In this series of messages on the Resurrection we will look at 3 areas;

First – the purpose of the Resurrection

Second - the privilege of the Resurrection

Third – the proof of the Resurrection

First – the purpose of The Resurrection

Ho 13:14  “I will ransom them from the power of the grave;

                 I will redeem them from death.

                 O Death, 2I will be your plagues! (where is your punishment?)

                 O Grave, 4I will be your destruction! (where is your sting?)

                  Pity is hidden from My eyes.”

The purpose of the resurrection is to rescue us from death, hell, and the grave

What the resurrection is;

Resurrection is a rising to life from death for the saved

                        and a rising from death to condemnation for the lost.

Jn 5:28-29  28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

The nature of the resurrection body;

Resurrection is to be distinguished from resuscitation or reanimation of the physical body. It denotes a complete transformation of the human being

a)  It will be spiritual, a body adapted to the use of the soul in its glorified state, and to all the conditions of the heavenly state;

b)  Glorious, incorruptible, and powerful like unto the glorified body of Christ

c)  and immortal

The qualities of the resurrection body will be different from those of the body laid in the grave.

Php 3:20-21  the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body,

 1 Co 15:42-49  1 Cor. 15:51-54

We shall all be changed

 This body of corruptible must put on incorruption,

 And this mortal body must put on immortality

 The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption.

The body is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory

The body is sown in weakness, it is raised in power

The body is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body

The spiritual body is not first, but the natural body

As we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man

Lk 24:36-39    36 Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”

1 Co 15:42-49  42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. 43 It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. 49 And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.

1 Cor. 15:51-54  51 Behold, I tell you a 4mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

But its identity will be preserved though in the image of the heavenly Man- Jesus Christ

Mt 17:1-4   Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

The means of the resurrection;

Christ’s resurrection secures and illustrates the resurrection.

His resurrection is evidence to His redemptive power; and the redemption of our bodies

*Our Lord gave his disciples ample opportunity of testing the fact of his resurrection.

*He conversed with them face to face.

*They touched him (Matt. 28:9; Luke 24:39; John 20:27),

*And he ate bread with them (Luke 24:42, 43; John 21:12, 13).

*Christ’s manifestation of himself to Paul at Damascus, who speaks of it as an appearance of the risen Saviour (Acts 9:3–9, 17; 1 Cor. 15:8; 9:1).

*It is implied in the words of Luke (Acts 1:3) that there may have been other appearances of which we have no record.

*The resurrection is spoken of as the act

(1) of God the Father (Ps. 16:10; Acts 2:24; 3:15; Rom. 8:11; Eph. 1:20;

                                    Col. 2:12; Heb. 13:20);

(2) of Christ himself (John 2:19; 10:18); and

(3) of the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 3:18). [1]

The redemption of our body is possible because of our union with Christ

1 Cor. 15:21, 22   21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.

1 Thess. 4:14 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

The redemption of our body is possible because his Spirit dwells in us making our bodies his members

1 Cor. 6:15   15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?

Rom. 8:11   11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies 4through (Or because of) His Spirit who dwells in you.

The redemption of our body is possible because Christ by covenant is Lord both of the living and the dead

Rom. 14:9    9 For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

We don’t know everything about it as we will someday; we just need to be ready!

1 John 3:2   2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
