Theme - Plants and Nature
because Tom is a farmer
He loved plants.
Tom was farmer
and a gardener.
As a farmer, Tom enjoyed watching plants grow. He could be found out in the cornfield seeing if it was crusted or walking entire rows to see if the irrigation water was going through. He would spend hours out there. Then when he was no longer able to farm, he turned to gardening, and loved watching tomatoes and peppers grow. Most years, starting his own plants from seed, and nurturing them along. He loved poring over the seed catalogs in the spring.
see if it crusted
checking irrigation water
Make that the theme.
When he could not longer farm. He started got garden. He could not stop his calling toward plants.
He loved planting seed
The Bible is replete
watching it grow.
with illustrations
from plants.
God created us
to be farmers!
Genesis 2:15 ESV
The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
It is in our DNA!
put hands in soil
sow the seed
watch it grow.
We were made for this!!!
Jesus speaks of farming.
One parable:
Mark 4:26–29 HCSB
“The kingdom of God is like this,” He said. “A man scatters seed on the ground; he sleeps and rises —night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows—he doesn’t know how. The soil produces a crop by itself—first the blade, then the head, and then the ripe grain on the head. But as soon as the crop is ready, he sends for the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
Who put in sickle?
Jesus.
(verse about Jesus coming on the clouds with a sickle)
What is this verse talking about?
yes,
the 2nd coming
Some are surprised
by the phrase:
“He knows not how”
We understand
the work
the decisions
Tilling

yes, no

Before his disability, he was a very hard worker, out in the field for long hours, as most farmers do. It was very hard for him when he could no longer work.
Tom was a good businessman, always negotiating good deals. He was always very thoughtful with his purchases. He would do a lot of research and comparing, always finding the best prices.
Farming is tireless effort,
nobody knows better
than the farmer
what it takes
to nurture plants.
On the other hand:
“He knows not how”
It is easy to be a believer when you are a farmer/rancher
There are so many misterious things
We know God is involved.
For example,
Germination of the seed.
With all of our scientific knowlege we cannot create it.
We can genetically modify it.
We can enhance certain characteristics within the plant.
But we cannot make a seed.
And we cannot fully understand the miracle of germination.
Yet, as amazing as the seed is in itself.
To reach its full potential, it needs a farmer.
Farmers today,
preparing
enriching
soil.
Seed must be planted in good soil and at the right depth.
Farming is an amazing cooperation between the human work and the miracles of God.
Without the sunlight, given by God, no photosynthesis could occur.
Photosynthesis is a miracle of its own.
We can scientifically explain how chlorophyll works.
Step 1 - CO2 and H2O enter the leaf

Want to learn this set quickly?

Step 2 - Light hits the pigment in the membrane of a thylakoid, splitting the H2O into O2
FLASHCARDSLEARNMATCH
Step 3 - The electrons move down to enzymes
Step 4 - Sunlight hits the second pigment molecule allowing the enzymes to convert ADP to ATP and NADP+ gets converted to NADPH
Step 5 - The ATP and NADPH is used by the calvin cycle as a power source for converting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into simple sugar glucose.
Step 6 - The calvin cycle converts 3CO2 molecules from the atmosphere to glucose. The second of two major stages in photosynthesis (following the light reactions), involving atmospheric CO2 fixation and reduction of the fixed carbon into carbohydrate.
We can kinda explain it.
But we can’t create it.
Even if we could make a machine
that would do similar
chemical processes.
That machine
could not
create a tiny seed
that could
reproduce itself.
No, no,
those things are left
to the Infinite One.
How true are the words.
“A man scatters seed on the ground; he sleeps and rises —night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows—he doesn’t know how. The soil produces a crop by itself...”
The things God has made
are truly amazing.
Tom always appreciated nature and loved pretty scenery. When he went on a trip. It was for the scenery not the tourist attractions.
Christ’s Object Lessons Chapter 3—“First the Blade, Then the Ear”

Every seed grows, every plant develops, by the power of God.

Jesus teaches
it is a miracles
through God
that plants grow.
All this is a parable
to teach what?
The soil is our heart
The is is the gospel of Jesus
It is a miracle.
Sower - other people who share this gospel.
In this life:
Genesis 8:22 ESV
While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”
Life keeps going.
sometimes harvest is good
or bad.
Seasons keep coming
Calving can be daunting.
or downright depressing.
So it is
with the spiritual.
Isaiah 55:11 ESV
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Christ’s Object Lessons Chapter 3—“First the Blade, Then the Ear”

The germination of the seed represents the beginning of spiritual life

Christ’s Object Lessons Chapter 3—“First the Blade, Then the Ear”

and the development of the plant is a beautiful figure of Christian growth. As in nature, so in grace; there can be no life without growth. The plant must either grow or die.

Christ’s Object Lessons Chapter 3—“First the Blade, Then the Ear”

As the plant takes root in the soil, so we are to take deep root in Christ.

Christ’s Object Lessons Chapter 3—“First the Blade, Then the Ear”

As the plant receives the sunshine, the dew, and the rain, we are to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit.

Malachi 4:2 ESV
But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.
The Bible is the farmers book.
Speaking of calves:
Tom enjoyed animals. He enjoyed keeping records during calving season, writing everything down in a new book and lining up all the eartags, all carefully written, on the kitchen table, much to Sandy’s dismay.
He loved animals.
Those in the house:
He had three house cats. One would jump up on the bed and lay on his chest. He also liked Kelly’s little pug dog. When Tom was in the recliner, Frankie would squeeze in beside him.
Hosea 6:3 ESV
Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.”
How do we grow?
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
This is the being ripe.
The harvest comes.
Let’s identify
Who put in sickle?
Jesus.
Revelation 14:14–16 ESV
Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and seated on the cloud one like a son of man, with a golden crown on his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand. And another angel came out of the temple, calling with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud, “Put in your sickle, and reap, for the hour to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.” So he who sat on the cloud swung his sickle across the earth, and the earth was reaped.
What is this verse talking about?
yes,
the 2nd coming
No good farmer
would go to all
that work
and not harvest!
It is the reason
for all the effort.
You can be sure,
the Divine farmer
is coming back.
The only question is,
where is my heart.
Tom has not died,
his case is decided.
What about yours?

1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 NKJV
But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.
Praise the Lord,
We have hope.
In something more
after this.
At this point,
it’s hard to see
through the
portals of the tomb.
In this life,
death is Satan’s
greatest victory.
In the next life,
death with be
Satan’s greatest
failure and defeat.
