In the Gospel, Cleopas and another disciple are leaving Jerusalem fearful and disappointed.
The difference between the two mind sets is that one has seen the risen Lord, the others have not.
Now in the Gospel Jesus comes along the disappointed fearful disciples on the way and disguises himself consoles them and give s them hope from scripture, and then Vanishes from their sight at the breaking of bread when they recognized it is Jesus with him? Now these two are emboldened totally elated return to Jerusalem that same night after a day’s journey to tell others they had seen Jesus alive.
Now why would Jesus disguise himself then Vanish from their sight in the breaking of bread?
I think Jesus is pointing to the many mysteries of what is really seen or unseen all around us. That in seeing him and not recognizing, his vanishing in the breaking of bread, starts coming to light and clarity, that he was still fully present there with them. He vanished from their sight in the breaking of the bread, for us to see through their eyes, and through our eyes of faith, the risen Lord who with us always in the Eucharist. For us to rejoice and be glad be consoled and filled hope, to take courage, not be afraid, emboldened in faith, to proclaim the Gospel, doing works of mercy, yes even miracles in Jesus name, to proclaim to the world, Jesus Christ is risen from the dead Alleluia, Alleluia.
