This is the account of God pronouncing judgement on the Serprent, Eve, and Adam
I. The fist punishment (V. 14-15)
Genesis 3:14–15 ESV
14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Gen
A. you are cursed
A few things worth noting in verse 14. We do not know exactly when satin and his angels fell from heaven but we know that it had not yet happened at the compleation of creation because of what we see in
Genesis 1:31 ESV
31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
If the Devil and his angels had fallen how could everything have been verry good? The fact is it couldn’t so therfore some amount of time had passed between creation an this event .
We know that the serprent was a land animal because of Genisis 3:1
Genesis 3:1 ESV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
So due to what the serprent did God cursed it by making it to crawl on it’s belly and eat duest.
B. Forshodowing of Christ (V.15)
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
What we see here is that there will be emnity between Eve and the serprent not only that the offspring of both would also take part in this. and the serprent shall bruse the heal of man but the head of the serpent would be brused which would be a fatel blow.
a. offspring
-seed of the serprent-This is not refering to physical offspring of satin, as there is no indication that he ever had any physical offspring, but rather it is his spiritual decendents
— The seed of the woman here is Jecues christ who would come sometime in the future
It is not the virgin Marry. The Latin Vulgate version of the Old testemnt has a verry problumatic translation of this passage where it changes the masculane pronoun to a feminine one. this has given wrongful claims attributing this to the virgin Merry this interpertation has absolutly no basis in scripture
b. bruse head
The seed of the woman will crush the serpent's head indicating Satan's ultimate defeat. This has different aspects.
1.At The Cross The first stage of the Devil's defeat was at the cross. It was there where Satan was initially defeated. Jesus said:
2. The secound comming
When Christ eventually returns to the earth, He will bind Satan and place him in the pit ().
3. The Lake of fire Eventually Satan will be cast into the lake of fire along with those who followed him (). Scripture looks forward to the day when the serpent's head will be crushed.
Romans 16:20
c. bruse heal
The seed of the serpent would bruise the heel of the seed of the woman. On the cross Satan bruised the heel of Christ, causing His death. Bruising suggests something that was not ultimate or final. Christ died on our behalf being made sin for us (). He bore our judgment upon Calvary's cross and, in doing so, bruised His heel. Though wounded, the damage done to Jesus was not final, for He came back from the dead three days later.
II. The secound punishment (v.16)
Genesis 3:16 ESV
16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.”
To eve an increased pain in childbaring was her punishment
notice what it says “increase in pain” pain existed in childbaring before the fall, but due to the full the pain increased
Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.”
III. the third punishment (V. 17-19)
Genesis 3:17–19 ESV
17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Adams sin
1. He listened to eve
2. He ate of the tree
Adam’s consequence
1. the ground was cursed
2. he would have to work the ground instead of just eating anything he wanted with no work
3. death would occur and he would return to dust
IV. THe Final Punishment (V 20-24)
Genesis 3:20–24 ESV
20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. 22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
notice the statement like one of us again proof for the trinity
-The punishment for all was that they were removed from the garden of eden and now had to work the ground.
we never think sin will have consequenses, well it does.
