We all have areas in our lives where we experience fear, worrym, and anxiety in our lives
If anyone had reason to experience any of these types of anxiety it was the disciples in the upper room in the days following the Crucifixion of Jesus.
John 20:19-23
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
Last week was easter Sunday, where we find our selves in the passage today, it is still Resurrection Sunday
This is still Resurrection Sunday. I was thinking the other day, what’s one way of making sure I preached a good Easter Message Cistern Church’s first Easter??? Then the light came on! I know! I’ll preach two Easter Messages. So if you didn’t think much of last week’s message, here’s a 2nd attempt!!! Just kidding. Just before Palm Sunday we wrapped up our series on Colossians, we looked at The Gospel of John’s account of the event’s on Easter morning and decided, “let’s just finish the Gospel of John. We’re so close to the end of the book. Let’s just continue from where we left off from Easter to the end of this gospel
Where we left off was , so we’re picking up here in verse 19

vs. 19-20 - Setting the Scene
Verse 19 and 20 pretty much tells us the big picture of what happened that night, 21-23 give us more details. But let’s set the scene...
It’s Sunday night.
8 days ago Jesus’ was welcomed in to Jerusalem as the God’s instrument of Salvation,
For 5 days Jesus taught in the temple and performed miracles on the streets of Jerusalem
4 nights ago the disciples were in this very same room enjoying a feast with Jesus as their leader. they talked about the kingdom
3 days ago Jesus died on a cross
Earlier this same day they found out Jesus’ body was no longer in the tomb

Joy & Expectation vs. Fear & Dread
Looking to Jesus vs. Looking out for Authorities
vs. 19 “Peace be with you.”

Jesus’ first word is “Peace”
This is the one thing the disciples do not have.
traditional middle-eastern greeting, but in context means so much more
translation - May God give you every good thing
vs. 20 - the presence of Jesus changes everything
20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
Jesus’ presence changes everything. Jesus’ shows his disciples his hands and his side. The cross wasn’t some nightmare or bad dream. It was real. It happened… and here Jesus was standing in their midst proving that he had overcome, even the cross.
Changes the atmosphere
Changes our emotional state
changes our focus
20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
John 20:
Notice that in once sense, nothing about the disciples situation had really changed. The authorities were probably still upset and looking for Jesus’ followers. Probably even more so now b/c a body was “missing.”
Jesus rising from the dead didn’t change their social, political, or economic status.
It did change their focus. They were no looking at Jesus, rather than looking at their
Jesus’ presence in our lives changed everything!!!
Jesus’ invitation the disciples earlier in john is to abide ()
5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
When we are not abiding in Jesus, we quickly turn our focus outward to the things in our life that cause fear and anxiety.
we operate out of fear rather than identity

Vs. 21-23 - The Commission of Jesus

Re-iterate literal translation: MayGod give you every good thing… for what?

How did the father send Jesus
In the power of the Spirit
In relationship with the Father
What did this look like (What did the disciples witness in the life of Jesus?)
Jesus didn’t just teach the disciples what they “ought” to do. He modeled
They saw his prayer life
Often times Jesus went off alone to pray
They saw him suffer
Unfair accusations and quessions
While Praying in the Garden
Crucifixion
WHY? So that when the disciples faced opposition, accusations and suffering, they would know this is not unexpected or unbecoming of a disciple Jesus
They say the miraculous (as a result of relationship with the father)
We are sent out as disciples in process, leaning on, looking to, and pointing others to Jesus as the savior, redeemer, and source of new life.
vs. 22 “Receive the Holy Spirit”
Jesus breathed on them
- New life given to Adam!
- Dry bones raised to life

This is not a super power Christians has
Jesus says in - I am the way, the truth, and the life...”
The ultimate truth of the universe is this.
Every man and women in this world has sinned and is in need of a savior. Is in need of being saved from the consequences of their sin.
Forgiveness for our sins is only found by believing in Jesus. Believing he is the Son of God (He is God), believing he died in your place, & he rose from the dead.
The disciples, and now we as the church, have the responsibility to tell others this truth (As the father has sent me)
We have the responsibility to tell those we’ve shared this truth with if their response to this message brings about the forgiveness of their sins or if their response to this message leaves them in an unforgiven state.
we have the responsibility to tell each other the truth
when we see our bros & sisters believing lies, withdrawing from the fellowship… to remind each other of the truth
your sins are forgiven
you are a child of God
Jesus has already saved and freed you from your fears worries and anxiety
to remind each other to take our eyes of our problems and set our eyes on Jesus.
