Christians are Pilgrims because they are God’s Elect
Christians are Pilgrims because they are God’s Elect
2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
Elect - grk. eklektos, chosen
Foreknowledge - grk. prognosis, planning and plotting in advance of acting
They are God’s elect according to foreknowledge
of His children is by knowing who they are and planning for them in advance, before any action has taken place.
God’s way of choosing is not based on our future action
God’s election of His people is by knowing who they are, and planning for their lives in advance, or before any action has taken place.
They are God’s elect to be sanctified by the Spirit
Sanctify - grk. hagios, to be set apart, to be devoted
13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
You are pilgrims here because your lives have been set apart for God, and the Holy Spirit in you ensures that it will be so!
When a Christian begins to practice living a life “sanctified by the Holy Spirit”, sooner or later the world will want to let go of him.
They are God’s elect to become obedient children
All parents-to-be want their children to be obedient.
Disobedience - is a mark of this world
- disobedient to parents
- Israel was a disobedient and contrary people
- in the last men will be… disobedient to parents
- they profess to know God… [but] disobedient
- the unbelievers stumble…being disobedient
- the disobedient in the days of Noah
All good parents desire obedient children
14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;
Obedience is a mark of God’s people
Abraham obeyed -
obedient to masters in the flesh -
obedient to husbands -
obedient to the teaching -
obedient to leaders -
Sarah obeyed Abraham -
obedient to husbands -
obedient even when no one sees -
You are pilgrims in this world because you do not belong to this “disobedient generation” - you belong to God’s obedient family!
Christ obedient -
Ministry calls for obedience -
They were God’s elect to be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ
Sprinkling of blood symbolized -
purification -
with the blood of Jesus, we are not just ceremonially clean, but we are completely and thoroughly cleansed from the guilt of sin!
covenant -
with the blood of Jesus we are under covenant with God - the New Covenant!
protection -
with the blood of Jesus, we are protected from the evil schemes of the enemy!
pardon -
The blood of Abel cried for “justice” -
the blood of Jesus cried “Just!”
You are pilgrims in this world today because you are a purified people!
You are pilgrims in this world today because you are under covenant with God!
As pilgrims on this earth, you are under the protection of heaven!
As pilgrims

NOTE: In Gethsemane, Jesus prayed for the future pilgrims of the earth!
In Gethsemane, Jesus prayed for the future pilgrims of the earth!
9 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.
Christ’s concern is not the welfare of the world, but your welfare!
14 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.
16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.
Jesus foresaw what happens to the people that the world hates
They are not of the world - PILGRIMS and STRANGERS!
Sanctify them - set them apart
I have sent them - they have a mission to accomplish
I sanctify myself - Jesus set the example!
20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;
Jesus prayed for the rest of the believers who will become PILGRIMS
YES, WE ARE PILGRIMS OF THE EARTH. BUT ONLY BECAUSE GOD HAS CHOSEN US IN HIM BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD!
