Introduction

Tonight we return to the Old Testament prophet, Zechariah. It has been a interesting study so far. So lets return to the book and chapter 5
Lets look at verse 1.
Zechariah 5:1 ESV
1 Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a flying scroll!
Zechariah lifted up his eyes and it was revealed to him, a flying scroll. The scroll is a revelation of God’s word.
Let me share to verses with you.... from the book of Jeremiah
Jeremiah 36:2 ESV
2 “Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today.
and then
Jeremiah 36:28 ESV
28 “Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned.
So inscribed in this or upon this scroll are the words of a curse, by writing something down means that its contents were beyond escape or repeal.
Ezra 2:9 ESV
9 The sons of Zaccai, 760.
And since the scroll is flying, it means the curse was moving swiftly toward those who had committed the transgressions.
And then verse 2
Zechariah 5:2 ESV
2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.”
The interpreting angel then asks Zechariah what he sees… Zechariah says that he sees a flying scroll, and its size is defined here.
20 cubits long and 10 cubits wide.....
That is roughly 30 feet by 15 feet..... It is the size of the temple porch, the porch where the law was read in front of God’s people. Being in this place, it ready that the message on the scroll is divinely authoritative.
It is God’s message to the people, and its size indicates a great number of curses contained...
Verse 3....
Zechariah 5:3 ESV
3 Then he said to me, “This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole land. For everyone who steals shall be cleaned out according to what is on one side, and everyone who swears falsely shall be cleaned out according to what is on the other side.
The interpreting angel tells Zechariah what the meaning of all this means...
So the curse is one that will go over all the land. And those who break the covenant of the Lord will be cleared away or cut off. Those who sin will not be able to escape the wrath of the Lord and his judgment.
What are they judged by? They are judged by the word, most likely the commandments of God that are written on both sides of the scroll.
Verse 4
Zechariah 5:4 ESV
4 I will send it out, declares the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones.”
Zech 5:4
The Lord will send it out. The thief’s are those who have robbed God by failing to , also neglecting to give to the completion of the Lord’s house. Remember one of the darkest days for the children of Israel, is that they did not complete the building of his temple when they returned to the land. It started, but was never completed for over 20 years.
His word will enter the place of sinners and will remain there until the all it has accomplished His will...
Isaiah 55:10–11 ESV
10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
The promise of God will come forth in the future and will be consuming judgement as with Revelation chapters 6-19
Verses 5-6
Zechariah 5:5–6 ESV
5 Then the angel who talked with me came forward and said to me, “Lift your eyes and see what this is that is going out.” 6 And I said, “What is it?” He said, “This is the basket that is going out.” And he said, “This is their iniquity in all the land.”
Now the angel invited Zechariah to come and see… literally lift up your eyes in see that was going out form the Lord.
Zechariah asks the question, what is it?
A basket is seen, and in it is the sin of the people, it is all that their eyes were directed toward, so what ever captured the eyes of man was evil and it was all they looked toward. It is a picture of all the wicked Jews,
Perhaps it is a materialistic picture of sin, it is a collective picture of sin.
A great truth here is the fact that sin never escapes the eye of God, it cannot be hidden from Him. He sees and will judge them.
Verse 7
Zechariah 5:7 ESV
7 And behold, the leaden cover was lifted, and there was a woman sitting in the basket!
So again the basket is seen, and there is a lead cover over the top of it, and when it was lifted a woman was revealed to be there sitting in the basket.
What is the connection?
For some reason a woman is the personification of wickedness, here in this picture. This appears to be a picture of the final wickedness of men..
Revelation 17:3 ESV
3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns.
The cover of lead indicates that the woman cannot escape the basket. And thus there is coming a faithful day when all sin will be gone, nothing will prevail against the Lord.
Verse8
Zechariah 5:8 ESV
8 And he said, “This is Wickedness.” And he thrust her back into the basket, and thrust down the leaden weight on its opening.
The woman who is allowed to be seen, is shoved back into the basket, and the lid closed, there is no escape for it. Sin and wickedness will come upon the land and then captured and forever dealt with...
Listen to , verses 6-8
2 Thessalonians 2:6–8 ESV
6 And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.
Verse 9
Zechariah 5:9 ESV
9 Then I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, two women coming forward! The wind was in their wings. They had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and heaven.
Zechariah again sees a vision of the Lord, and this time he saw two women coming toward the basket...
Storks are considered unclean animals,
Leviticus 11:19 ESV
19 the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.
Leviticus 11:19 ESV
19 the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.
Lev
Deuteronomy 14:18 ESV
18 the stork, the heron of any kind; the hoopoe and the bat.
These must be the agents of evil and the demonic, and here the women are portrayed as evil who will carry the large basket upward, in between heaven and earth...
;
God will allow the devil, his harlot and others to establish a wicked presence on the earth, but He will destroy it when the Lord returns and established his kingdom.
Zechariah 10 ESV
1 Ask rain from the Lord in the season of the spring rain, from the Lord who makes the storm clouds, and he will give them showers of rain, to everyone the vegetation in the field. 2 For the household gods utter nonsense, and the diviners see lies; they tell false dreams and give empty consolation. Therefore the people wander like sheep; they are afflicted for lack of a shepherd. 3 “My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the Lord of hosts cares for his flock, the house of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle. 4 From him shall come the cornerstone, from him the tent peg, from him the battle bow, from him every ruler—all of them together. 5 They shall be like mighty men in battle, trampling the foe in the mud of the streets; they shall fight because the Lord is with them, and they shall put to shame the riders on horses. 6 “I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph. I will bring them back because I have compassion on them, and they shall be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the Lord their God and I will answer them. 7 Then Ephraim shall become like a mighty warrior, and their hearts shall be glad as with wine. Their children shall see it and be glad; their hearts shall rejoice in the Lord. 8 “I will whistle for them and gather them in, for I have redeemed them, and they shall be as many as they were before. 9 Though I scattered them among the nations, yet in far countries they shall remember me, and with their children they shall live and return. 10 I will bring them home from the land of Egypt, and gather them from Assyria, and I will bring them to the land of Gilead and to Lebanon, till there is no room for them. 11 He shall pass through the sea of troubles and strike down the waves of the sea, and all the depths of the Nile shall be dried up. The pride of Assyria shall be laid low, and the scepter of Egypt shall depart. 12 I will make them strong in the Lord, and they shall walk in his name,” declares the Lord.
Verses 10-11
Zechariah 5:10–11 ESV
10 Then I said to the angel who talked with me, “Where are they taking the basket?” 11 He said to me, “To the land of Shinar, to build a house for it. And when this is prepared, they will set the basket down there on its base.”
Zechariah asks the question, what are they doing, where are they taking the basket..
Zechariah 5:10 ESV
10 Then I said to the angel who talked with me, “Where are they taking the basket?”
Zechariah asks the question, what are they doing, where are they taking the basket..
To the land of Shinar… the women who are carrying the basket are taking it to one particular destination, a place called Shinar.
Shinar is the old word for Babylon. There Babylon will house the basket . what is interesting here is that the word Shinar while speaking of Babylon, it also has a picture of a older place which is in the same area, the place where the tower of Babel was located, this place is one that symbolizes opposition to God.
Listen to Genesis 10:10
Genesis 10:10 ESV
10 The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

the capital of the God-opposed world kingdoms, and so representing in general the seat of irreligion. As the “building of houses” in Babylon (Je 29:5, 28) by the Jews themselves expressed their long exile there, so the building of an house for “wickedness” there implies its permanent stay.

A house will be built to house it...

wickedness will be cast out of Judah and will forever dwell with the apostates, those who have abandoned God and the things of God, of who the antichrist dwells..
All of which these will on that great day will reap what they have sown....
God will settle all accounts
