Encountering Jesus

Do you remember the first time that you encountered Jesus?
What was your feelings? Your thoughts?
What was your reaction?
What about today, is your reaction still the same when you encounter Him?
When Jesus started His ministry, where does He find many of the disciples? On their boat fishing.
was the event that Jesus boarded the boat of Peter’s and had them cast out their nets and when they did, they caught so much it was hard to get it all in.
When Jesus had finished He called them to go with Him. Their response was:
Luke 5:11 ESV
11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
3 1/2 years later, Jesus had just arose from the dead and had revealed Himself to the disciples in the upper room.
Jesus commissions them and the Holy Spirit comes upon them, and Jesus leaves.
What happens next? Peter and some of the other disciples “goes fishing”!!

Prayer
Luke 21:1–14 ESV
1 Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” 5 And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, 6 “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” 7 And they asked him, “Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” 8 And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. 9 And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.” 10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. 13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer,
John 21:1–14 ESV
1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. 9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
John 21:1–3 ESV
1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
What else were they to do?
They had just experienced something they were not expecting.
Jesus had just left and they had no clue what to do or were to start. So they go back to what they know and is comfortable for them.
Many times we are the same way.
I had an encounter with Christ many years ago. I come to receive the salvation He freely gave.
But what was next? What was I to do now?
Just like the disciples, we tend to go back to what we know.
I went back to work and did what I knew best.
But what I didn’t know is what was to come.
The disciples went fishing, stayed out all night and caught nothing.
What disappointment. I’m sure they had great fellowship, but their attitude was probably poor because they wasted their time.
But something was fixing to happen!! They were going to have another encounter with Jesus!!
John 21:4–6 ESV
4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.
John 21:4-
“Just as day was breaking.”- Great things happen as we start our new day.
What I love is Jesus is standing on the shore each morning waiting on us to speak to.
We have the opportunity to encounter Jesus every morning. We have the Word of God before us. We have access to it in many different forms. (Paper, electronic) We can open an app from our phone, tablet, computer. Find the paper version laying on our table in a variety of different versions and translations.
When we open the Word, we have the ability to encounter Jesus and guide us in what we are called to do, how to live, act, treat others, proclaim the gospel. More important is learning more and more on who God is. (His name, greatness, abilities, goodness, mercy, and salvation)
But with all this we have a chose, just as we see with the disciples. The disciples could have said we tried all night. We are tired, we are experts. Who are you to tell me how to fish?
They listened and a great catch took place. When we take time in the Word, we catch something great!!
When they caught all they did, their eyes were opened to see who it was that was speaking.
Luke 24:32 ESV
They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
luke 24:32
John states it with excitement!!
John 21:7 ESV
7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.
IT IS THE LORD!!
When you encounter the Lord, do you proclaim it with excitement?
Or do you get excited as Peter?
John 21:8 ESV
8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
John 21:7–8 ESV
7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
John 21:
Peter jumped in the sea and swam just to get to Jesus.
Are you willing to be like Peter? Whatever it takes to encounter Him?
Because the end result is
The end result of encountering Jesus is rest, communion, and fellowship with Him.
John 21:9–14 ESV
Church, if we are willing to take the time in the Word and prayer, we will encounter the Lord like never before.
He will guide you on a journey like you have never experienced before.
You will find rest.
Matthew 11:28–30 ESV
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
