Intro: We’re continuing in the ongoing story of David, his battle’s, his failures, his triumphs…and today we see the final obstacle between David and the throne removed, today we’re looking at the death of Saul’s final son Ishbosheth
Theme: Brokenness....today we’re gonna see 3 kinds of brokenness
“It’s been said that there are three kinds of broken people...those who break others, those who others break, and those who break themselves. Whatever the cause we must acknowledge the fact that we live in a broken world that is in desperate need of healing

2 Samuel 4:1 ESV
1 When Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, heard that Abner had died at Hebron, his courage failed, and all Israel was dismayed.
1 Samuel 4:1 ESV
1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek.
2 Samuel 4:1–4 ESV
1 When Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, heard that Abner had died at Hebron, his courage failed, and all Israel was dismayed. 2 Now Saul’s son had two men who were captains of raiding bands; the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, sons of Rimmon a man of Benjamin from Beeroth (for Beeroth also is counted part of Benjamin; 3 the Beerothites fled to Gittaim and have been sojourners there to this day). 4 Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son who was crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled, and as she fled in her haste, he fell and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
So here in these first four verses we are faced with our broken parties....v.1 Is about Saul’s son who we know as Ishbosheth, In v.2 we’re introduced to 2 of Ishbosheth’s captains in his army (Baanah and Recab) and then in v.4 we’re briefly introduced to broken little boy named Mephibosheth
Let’s talk about the first and the third to start...
So here we see at the onset the entire mood of the house of Saul the death of Abner meant the end of Ish-Bosheth’s ability to retain the throne of Israel. because he had become so dependent on Abner that as soon as Abner deserted him it was as if he already knew that the crown was lost
First you have Ishbosheth - He’s the counter-fit king Who had reigned over the house of Saul for 2 and a half years…why do i say counter-fit? well remember, he wasn’t Anointed by God, He was anointed by Abner…He promoted him, Abner had exalted him, Abner was the backbone of Ishbosheth’s reign as king…and Ishbosheth loved it like that, he didn’t have to grow, he didn’t have to pay the price of leadership he could just depend on Abner to do the hard work and He would reap the benefits…But now Abner’s dead…and Ishbosheth’s world is falling apart
First you have Ishbosheth - who had reigned over the house of Saul for 2 and a half years....but he wasn’t Anointed by God, He was anointed by his next in charge Abner, Abner had promoted him, Abner had exalted him, Abner was the backbone of Ishbosheth’s reign as king…and all of Ishbosheth loved it like that, he didn’t have to grow, he didn’t have to pay the price of leadership he could just depend on Abner to do the hard work and He would reap the benefits…But now Abner’s dead…and Ishbosheth’s world is falling apart

App: Just so you know, if your would
Insight: Anytime you build your world around someone other then Jesus…your setting yourself up for a fall…because without fail…People always fail
Insight: Ishbosheth’s courage failed because He put all of his trust in a man
The death of Abner meant the end of Ish-Bosheth’s ability to retain the throne of Israel.
Then we have Mephibosheth - He was the son of David’s most beloved friend Johnathan, and also the victim of a great tragedy, when the news of Saul’s defeat made it back to the remaining royal family, the nurse who was watching over Mephibosheth begin to panic, and in her fear of the Philistines coming and wiping them out, she began to flee, and while fleeing she drops him, and it seems like some nerve damage was done to this young boy, and from that point on…He was lame…unable to walk again
Then we have Baanah and Rechab - Who were captain’s in Saul’s army and part of Saul’s own tribe (Remember Saul was a benjaminite) now these men are about to do something that will show you that they are completely over the house of Saul...
look...
2 Samuel 4:5-8
1 Samuel 4:5–7 NKJV
5 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth shook. 6 Now when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the sound of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” Then they understood that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp. 7 So the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp!” And they said, “Woe to us! For such a thing has never happened before.
2 Samuel 4:5–8 NKJV
5 Then the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, set out and came at about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth, who was lying on his bed at noon. 6 And they came there, all the way into the house, as though to get wheat, and they stabbed him in the stomach. Then Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. 7 For when they came into the house, he was lying on his bed in his bedroom; then they struck him and killed him, beheaded him and took his head, and were all night escaping through the plain. 8 And they brought the head of Ishbosheth to David at Hebron, and said to the king, “Here is the head of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul your enemy, who sought your life; and the Lord has avenged my lord the king this day of Saul and his descendants.”
2 Samuel 4:5–7 ESV
5 Now the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, set out, and about the heat of the day they came to the house of Ish-bosheth as he was taking his noonday rest. 6 And they came into the midst of the house as if to get wheat, and they stabbed him in the stomach. Then Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. 7 When they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and put him to death and beheaded him. They took his head and went by the way of the Arabah all night,
2 sam 4
So once again we’re seeing the Benjaminites attacking their own family member…they came under false pretenses to gather some wheat
So here are these crafty and wicked raiders of Saul’s army who see whats happening in the battle between the the house of David and Saul, they realize what Abner realized…yet instead of falling upon the mercy of king David, they decide to devise a plan…they went into the house of Ishbosheth house in the heat of the day (which is obviously poorly guarded) and with deceit in their hearts they go into to the bedroom of the sleeping king, stab him in cold blood and for cut off his head. the reason they did this was to then take the Ishbosheth’s head to king david so that the might be rewarded for their work
A couple of things to think about...
These guys were from the tribe of Benjamin…that means that they were Ishbosheth’s relatives
We’re told that they find Ishbosheth unguarded and unconscious sleeping - There’s a saying “when going gets tough the tough get going” Ishbosheth didn’t know this saying, he should have been training and learning, but instead he was sleeping…I think this just shows once again how weak he is...
This makes me think of something important to remember…There’s a time to rest and theres a time to be on guard and we should always know what time it is - when your kingdom is falling down, when the enemy is at the gates, thats not the time for business as usual…thats the time to train and stand watch, and pray
There’s a time to rest…and theres a time to work…and good leaders always know what time it is..
App: I think about this in regards to our Spiritual Lives…In this day and age there are far too many christians sleeping when they should be training...Because even-though our kingdom is not crumbling, the enemy is at the gates he will use deception and any means necessary to destroy us…nows not the time to spend all your time escaping into your Netflix, and being lulled to sleep by social media…now is the time to be training and ready for the work that God wants to do in your life
“Now’s the time to do what others arn’t willing to do so that we can have the power that others don’t have”
Ishbosheth got picked off because he was sleeping when he should have been preparing…you will as well if you don’t take heed
Because the enemy is at the gates
So they take the dead kings head to David…and look what happens
So
Insight: Just because someone is a family member, doesn’t mean there out for your best…thats why family should never simply get a free pass of influence in your life…God’s word should always be the guiding light...
So they take the dead kings head to David…and look what happens
2 Samuel 4:8–12 ESV
8 and brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron. And they said to the king, “Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life. The Lord has avenged my lord the king this day on Saul and on his offspring.” 9 But David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, “As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life out of every adversity, 10 when one told me, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and killed him at Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. 11 How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood at your hand and destroy you from the earth?” 12 And David commanded his young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet and hanged them beside the pool at Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it in the tomb of Abner at Hebron.
2 Samuel 4:7–12 ESV
7 When they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and put him to death and beheaded him. They took his head and went by the way of the Arabah all night, 8 and brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron. 2 Samuel 4:8 ESV
8 and brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron. And they said to the king, “Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life. The Lord has avenged my lord the king this day on Saul and on his offspring.”
2 Samuel 4:8–9 ESV

2 Samuel 4:7–9 ESV
7 When they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and put him to death and beheaded him. 2 Samuel 4:7–8 ESV
7 When they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and put him to death and beheaded him. They took his head and went by the way of the Arabah all night, 8 and brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron. 2 sam 4:
So here comes these men
So here comes these men with the head of this foolish yet (at least in this case innocent) king and they come before David and say “We have a gift for you, that we know you’ll love” we have the head of the son of Saul your enemy”
They acted upon a false understanding of the king
They thought they king would delight in the killing of his enemy
So here comes these men with the head of this foolish yet (at least in this case innocent) king and they come before David and say “We have a gift for you that we know you’ll love” we have the head of the son of Saul your enemy” and they even acted as representatives of the Lord...
Great travesties have been commited in the name of the Lord
Why would they do this? because it whenever a kingdom was
So these guys are obveously schemers, and they had a plan, to get in good with the king by offering him the head of his enemy…so surly this will end well for them right?
so surly this will end well for them right?
2 Samuel 4:9–12 ESV
9 But David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, “As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life out of every adversity, 10 when one told me, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and killed him at Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. 11 How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood at your hand and destroy you from the earth?” 12 And David commanded his young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet and hanged them beside the pool at Hebron. 2 Samuel 4:9–11 ESV
11 How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood at your hand and destroy you from the earth?”
Uh oh…You wanna know what their big mistake was? they thought they knew the king…but they really had no idea who he was...They underestimated David’s loyalty to God and the house of Saul....These men were guilty of many thingS, but the thing that would eventually cost them their lives was that they presumed to know what the king wanted even though they really didn’t…
They underestimated David’s loyalty to God and the house of Saul....These men were guilty of many thing, but the thing that would eventually cost them their lives was that they presumed to know what the king wanted even though they really didn’t…they thought the king would be like all the other kings from all the other nations who when they would take over they would wipe out the whole family of the fallen king so that they would be challenged
David was a different kind of king
but they underestimated David’s loyalty to God and the house of Saul....These men were guilty of many thing, but the thing that would eventually cost them their lives was that they presumed to know what the king wanted even though they really didn’t…they thought the king would be like all the other kings from all the other nations who when they would take over they would wipe out the whole family of the fallen king so that they would be challenged

But David just wasn’t that kind of king...
He was a king who trusted in God’s timing when it came to the throne - He knew that if the had called him to be king over all of Israel it would happen in the Lord’s timing - It didn’t have to strive and kill and make it happen himself…the Lord said it…the Lord will bring it to past
He was a king who kept his promises - David was loyal to his pledge to honor and preserve Saul’s family and descendants…Chapter 24 gives us one of the last times Saul would interact with David…and Saul has a moment of clarity knows David’s gonna be king…so he makes a request
David was loyal to his pledge to honor and preserve Saul’s family and descendants…lot at this...
Rechab and Baanah thought David would be pleased to see the severed head of Ishbosheth. They underestimated David’s loyalty to God and the house of Saul. David was loyal to his pledge to honor and preserve Saul’s family and descendants ().
1 Samuel 24:21–22 ESV
21 Swear to me therefore by the Lord that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father’s house.” 22 And David swore this to Saul. Then Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
App: And in that same way…there are many people who say they love Jesus and even try to serve Jesus…but they really know who Jesus is
The sad fact is there will be a lot of people who will die in their sins because they made assumptions about God that just weren’t true…both inside the church and out
But David just wasn’t that kind of king...
The way you come to know who King Jesus is is though his Word...
John 5:39 ESV
39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,
You wanna know the king…read the bible
He was a king who trusted in God’s timing - He knew that if the had called him to be king over all of Israel it would happen in the Lord’s timing - It didn’t have to strive and kill and make it happen himself…the Lord said it…the Lord will bring it to past
Back to these men and king David...Look what happens next...
He was
2 Samuel 4:12 ESV
12 And David commanded his young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet and hanged them beside the pool at Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it in the tomb of Abner at Hebron.
Thats pretty gruesome why did David cut off their hands and feet…well have you heard that saying “you only get one chance to make a first impression” this was his way of saying that His kingdom would be different Saul’s house…and he’s essentally saying hand’s off the house of Saul
“By this act of justice, David showed to all Israel that he was a decided enemy to the destruction of Saul’s family; and that none could lift up their hands against any of them without meeting with condign punishment.” (Clarke)
And then to honor the dead king they took Ishbosheth’s head, and buried it in the tomb of Abner...
Thats the story...Now in this chapter we see sets of parties representing 3 different types of brokenness…think about it
Now in this chapter we see 3 types of brokenness…
Ishbosheth - Broken by his own actions
W
He was broken by his own choices, he chose to be king even-though God had not anointed him for the task and he chose to put all of his trust in Abner…and it cost him
App: Maybe you or someone you know is like this - there are many broken people who are angry at the world because this person did this and this person did that and they blame others for all of the brokenness in their life...but the truth of the matter is that real culprit is the one staring back at you in the mirror
I think about the words of James
James 1:13–15 ESV
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
James 1
Maybe this is you…before healing can come…you have to own the issue
Now we also see...
Mephibosheth - Broken by the actions of another
Mephibosheth
He didn’t ask to be dropped, he didn’t ask to be lame, this brokenness just happened to him…and thats same truth for some people...that the brokenness the’ve experienced is because of something that was out of their control
Some have had it passed down culturally or chemically
Some have had it passed down culturally or chemically from their families
Some have been broken by the wicked acts of others - Sexual, Emotional, Abandonment
Some have something happen to them thats out of their control
App: This is why we as christians must lead with...love patience and empathy because some people are dealing with brokenness that they never asked for
Juris
The women with Blood
Blind Bart
The Father with the demon possessed son
Be carful when dealing with Broken people!!!
Baanah and Rechab - Those who break others
One of the truths about broken people “is that often break things” be it hearts, laws, trust, families, or much worse...and In this case they took the life of an unsuspecting (at least in a sense) innocent man who was their own relative while he slept and brutally kill him in cold blood…though they had a reason, to everyone else this would seem sensless

App: And it makes me think about all the seemingly senseless acts that go on in our world...
Columbine
Sandy Hook
9/11
I think about the bombing in Sri Lanka this past easter - 257 people died
There are some who would say “this is why I don’t believe in God, because theres so much pain in the world” but to me i see it in favor of God’s existence…because it shows us that the deep down brokenness of our sinful state…and the fact that we collectively mourn of these types of atrocities shows us that this is not the way it ought to be
I think the bible gives the most comprehensive explanation - We’re made in God’s image…Sin tweaked us…God in his love sent Jesus to restore us to who we were created to be
So in conclusion this leads us to the last issue
What do we do with all this brokenness?
So theirs no denying that their is brokenness in this world…and theirs no easy solutions
Here’s pieces of wisdom before we close
Here’s pieces of wisdom before we close
If you’re broken, don’t hide it, confess it.
Many Christians feel like it’s “unchristian” to admit that you struggle, and we hide our struggles with denial or projecting it upon others
how do we hide our brokenness?
To hide your brokenness is to not truly believe in the gospel...You don’t believe that he loves you…You don’t believe in his grace
Often times we must be willing to ask others and be open to
Maybe you should ask someone close to you?
Romans 8:31–37 ESV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Rom
App: This is what the bible says is our in Jesus…do you believe it or not…if you don’t secrecy will be your way…If you do then you know you can be free to speak about your struggles...
-39
We just play dumb and say it doesn’t exist
To hide your brokenness is to not truly believe in the gospel
Romans 9:31 ESV
31 but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law.
You don’t believe that he loves you…You don’t believe in his grace
You don’t believe in his grace
Understand your ultimate healing and restoration comes from Jesus.
We spoke a little about this last week, many times we start coming to church because we have problems…and our hope is that if we come to church Jesus will fix our current issue…but often times that external issues are connected to deeper issues…a heart issue…and no one can treat that issue like Jesus…I’m not saying that you punt practical solutions…but Jesus is the only one who can change you at your deepest level...
“C. S. Lewis put this so poetically in his book The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. There’s a boy named Eustace, and everybody hates him and he hates everybody. He’s selfish, he’s mean, and nobody can get along with him. But he finds himself magically on a boat, the Dawn Treader, taking a great voyage.
Soon he realizes there’s no way out. He can’t go on the boat, he’s going to be left on the island alone, he’s going to be horrible all of his life. He falls
At one point this boat pulls in to an island, and Eustace wanders off and finds a cave. The cave proves to be filled with diamonds and rubies and gold. He thinks, “I’m rich!” And immediately, because he is who he is, he thinks that now he’ll be able to pay everybody back. Anyone who has laughed at him, stepped on him, slighted him, will now get whats coming to him. Eustace then falls asleep on the pile of treasure—which he doesn’t yet know is the hoard of a dragon. And because he falls asleep with greedy dragonish thoughts in his heart, when he wakes up, he’s become a dragon
Soon he realizes there’s no way out. He can’t go on the boat, he’s going to be left on the island alone, he’s going to be horrible all of his life. He falls into despair.
One day the great lion Aslan shows up, leads him to a clear pool of water, and tells him to undress and jump in. And suddenly Eustace realizes that “undress” means “take off the dragon skin.”

One day the great lion Aslan shows up, leads him to a clear pool of water, and tells him to undress and jump in. And suddenly Eustace realizes that “undress” means “take off the dragon skin.” He begins to gnaw and claw off the scales, and he realizes that he can shed his skin. Working at it, he finally peels off this skin—but to his dismay, he finds that underneath he’s got another dragon skin. He tries a second time and a third time, to no avail; the same thing still happens each time. In the end the lion says, You’re going to have to let me go deeper. And here’s how Eustace tells the story later:”

“I was afraid of his claws, I can tell you, but I was pretty nearly desperate now. . . . The very first tear he made was so deep that I thought it had gone right into my heart. And when he began pulling the skin off, it hurt worse than anything I’ve ever felt. . . . Well, he peeled the beastly stuff right off—just as I thought I’d done it myself the other three times, only they hadn’t hurt—and there it was lying on the grass: only ever so much thicker, and darker, and more knobbly-looking than the others had been. . . . Then he caught hold of me . . . and threw me into the water. It smarted like anything but only for a moment. . . . Then I saw . . . I’d turned into a boy again.”

App: Some of you, are broken and you know it…but you’re like Eustace Clawing away trying to remove your own scales…Jesus is the only one who can go deep enough
Here’s the last thing i want to say to those of you see the wickedness of senseless violence in the world and your saying “Some people are getting away with murder”…just remember this
Jesus is the king that judges injustice
Think about the our story today these 2 raiders though they had gotten away with murder…until they met the king
App: David is simply a picture of Jesus
Peter calls Jesus the Judge of the living and the dead…he will judge fairly and no one can hide from It
So is there brokenness in this world…Absolutely…is their hope for us? Absolutely…Jesus is his name
Recognize God will always judge injustice
