I stand before you one redface guy.
We know what to do, to put on Sun screen and I did but I didn’t do enough.
Life is like that - know what to do but don’t do it or you did it but not enough
Gets a lot more serious. We know how we should
treat our bodies
treat someone else
Then there are thinks we don’t really know how to do or why they are a big deal but we should be doing them right?
How we are to treat God.
We might know what God called on us to do, or we might know just little bit
But we didn’t do it.

Regret is like a sunburn.

it doesn’t matter how we feel about it, it will show itself
With much of what we screw up in life, Like a sun burn, we can go along trying to tell ourselves no big deal. ignore it and keep exposing ourselves to danger
But like a sunburn it shows. Shows in how we keep making the same mistakes, keeping beating ourselves up, keeping trying to earn our way back, keep focusing on what was lost. Our regrets show back up

Christ gives new ways to respond to regret.

Christ was and is perfect. That isn’t helpful for regret, just makes us more aware but the ancient text, the Bible also records people just as screwed up as us, or even more screwed up.
First, two weeks ago we talked about Easter. Jesus rose from the dead. But lets talk about before that. The night before Jesus died on the cross, he shared the Last Supper with the disciples. During that meal
Luke 22:20–24 CSB
20 In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 But look, the hand of the one betraying me is at the table with me. 22 For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 So they began to argue among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do it. 24 Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest.
Luke 22:20-24
These disciples whom Jesus taught to love God and love others, whom he taught blessed are the peacemakers, and more were fighting. AFTER THE LORD’s SUPPER

You’re not alone! Even those closest to Jesus had reason to regret!

That same night, Jesus led them to a garden to pray.
Luke 22:39–42 CSB
39 He went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 When he reached the place, he told them, “Pray that you may not fall into temptation.” 41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me—nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
While this happened at night look how close the garden is to Jerusalem and the temple.

Prayer is like sunscreen, it can prevent regret.

So of course the disciples would listen to Jesus and pray, nope
Luke 22:45 CSB
45 When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief.
Luke 22:
Right then a mob came, Judas one of the disciples signaled to the mob who Jesus was with a kiss. The disciples who once again had been told that Jesus was going to die, who had been told blessed are the peacemakers, picked up a sword and started swinging.
Jesus put a stop to it, was arrested and then most of those disciples who said they would never betray or leave Jesus took off!!

Abandoning Jesus to pursue what we fear to lose is common, so is the regret!

joy in life, sexual fulfillment, worth, fame, healing, wealth, love, or even life itself
If the story ended here it would just be a bunch of tragedy and pathetic abandonment.
Maybe for many of you that’s where you feel your story is. A list of your pathetic actions and failures.
Unlike Avengers time travel isn’t real but the resurrection of Jesus Christ certainly was.
I told you that the book of acts tells of what happens after the resurrection, the part 2.
In it we begin to see God’s forgiveness
Understand this that all forgiveness comes through Jesus Christ
Ephesians 1:7 The Message
7 Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we’re a free people—free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free!
Romans 3:26 CSB
26 God presented him to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so that he would be righteous and declare righteous the one who has faith in Jesus.
How does God do with this?
When we call upon the name of the Lord? What does that mean, we believe by our actions that God came as Jesus, He was born, Jesus lived, died paying the punishment for my sin and yours. and then rose again! He is God and we will live for Him.
God forgives all our sins, he does this by doing a miracle

You and I cannot forget sin, God can. It’s called the miracle of forgiveness.

I still remember a lot of the things I did, those that were done not knowing what would happen and those done on purpose. God made us this way so we can learn.
Isaiah 43:25 CSB
25 “I—I sweep away your transgressions for my own sake and remember your sins no more.
Jeremiah 31:34 CSB
34 No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know me, from the least to the greatest of them”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “For I will forgive their iniquity and never again remember their sin.
God chooses to forgive you and He won’t bring up your failures upon judgement. God, the righteous judge sees the cross.
But the resurrection of Jesus, isn’t just about forgiveness it is about a new life! It is restoration.
2 Corinthians 5:17 CSB
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!
New can me receiving opportunities as your new self, to do something very similar to what you failed at before but now as a follower of Christ, you are a completely new person, with the Holy Spirit in you, around you, guiding you.
Look what happened to the disciples after Jesus was resurrected and after he left this earth with a promise that he would return one day. So after he left, look what happened.
First before he left he told them not to leave Jerusalem even though none of them were from Jerusalem.
Acts 1:4 CSB
4 While he was with them, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. “Which,” he said, “you have heard me speak about;
Now to the part right after Jesus said see you later.
Now to the part right after Jesus said see you later.
Acts 1:12 CSB
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem—a Sabbath day’s journey away.
Acts 1:11–15 CSB
11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven.” 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem—a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they arrived, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 14 They all were continually united in prayer, along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. 15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers and sisters—the number of people who were together was about a hundred and twenty—and said:
:
They did the simple thing - stay in Jerusalem, but the tough thing none of them were from Jerusalem. They were foreigners.
It is said they returned from the mt. of olives, guess what is on the slopes of the mt. of olives? That’s right the garden.
Acts 1:13 CSB
13 When they arrived, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
These are the exact same guys that were at the supper minus the betrayer. They could’ve been in the same room or a similar type room in a different part of the city.
Acts 1:14 CSB
14 They all were continually united in prayer, along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
WHAT!! These guys who fought, who battled about who was better, who couldn’t say awake one night, Now gathered and were united in prayer
It doesn’t say it in this verse but this happened for days!!!

Sunscreen is like prayer, its good to have a friend when using.

High School. No one would put sunscreen on me. At the end of the day I had splashes of sunburn on my back.
Wednesday nights have been wonderful. If you are not in a small group your missing out on church.
My daughters were not intimate in their sunscreen
Close friends can pray warnings, keep you up or down, make sure your back has full coverage!

Prayer is individual and it unites us in groups

These men were told to do one thing, stay in Jerusalem and pray.
While there the disciples were asked to do one thing - to pray (they failed)
They said they would stay loyal: When the arrest came, at first they fought- not Jesus way, and then they scattered and hid (they failed)
Resurrection allows for a redo
After Jesus was resurrected he told the disciples not to leave Jerusalem 1:4
They stayed
The next scene is at the 2000 paces on the slopes near the Garden again
Walking together (spending close to 40 days together)
The men were as diverse as could be
Peter, a fisherman, and spontaneous, poor impulse control, adventurous. He literally was the first out of the boat.
John and James, fought so much, Jesus nicknamed the sons of thunder
They did and the whole world changed but they also were completely restored. IN an upper room they were no longer failures but exactly who Jesus had called them to be. They could concentrate in prayer, they could unite, they could remain loyal.
Matthew, a tax collector and Simon, a Zealot
They gathered in the upper room (not that weird, and not that upper room)
They stayed united in prayer (redo)
God has called you to something too. Perhaps it seems too simple
They couldn’t do this before

Faithfulness is doing the simple and leaving the results to God.

This time it was for days
What has God been calling you to do?
We have a calling to go into the world, but specific tasks can be very simple.
Hot Dog - Harry
He tells us to admit we are a sinner
He tell us to follow him in baptism
He tell us to make the phone call, have the awkward conversation, seize the moments - He calls us to be united
He calls us to pray
