Introduction to the Section

Review

Conversion makes a definite change, it will be evident that a person is different.
You may continue to struggle with these things but as Christian you have had a definite break with them, they don’t define you anymore.
We are then called and enabled to begin to put on our New Man, by new Habit patterns. We learn to apply by faith what God says is true and then walk it out.
We do this not to achieve God’s favor, but because we already have His favor.

Verses 25-5:6

Our section gives practical ways that we are to put off our old man.
6 Things
Lying
Uncontrolled anger
Stealing
Corrupting Speech
Bitterness to love
Unrestrained sexual behavior

The Training Ground For this New Man

The Church is the proving ground for the New Man lifestyle. Lone ranger Christians don’t mature.
The Whole Section is referring to a believers relationship with other believers. It’s the proving ground for a person’s new walk. A person’s New Nature is evidenced in how they treat the Church, their relationship to other believers. It’s a primary application of our Sanctification.
Therefore:
We don’t treat the Church as unimportant or non-essential.
We committ ourselves to love and serve our brothers and by doing so we flesh out what God has put in us.

Liars Change When They Believe the Gospel

They don’t stay the same, they don’t stay habitual liars.

One of the Clearest Examples, Zaccheus

The Bible on Lying

Defined

Pseudos: lie, falsehood, conscious and intentional falsehood. whatever is not what it professes to be: so of perverse, impious, deceitful precepts, (Thayer)
Examples: exaggeration, cheating in school, cheating on your income tax, making foolish promises (I’ll pray for you), betraying another persons confidence, flattering people to control what they thing, making up excuses.

Explained

whatever is not what it professes to be: so of perverse, impious, deceitful precepts, (Thayer)
Lying is one of the 10 commandments because it’s is contrary to God’s nature he’s true and righteous and that’s why it’s akin to idolatry.
God Hates Lying
Proverbs 6:16–19 ESV
16 There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, 19 a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
God will Punish Liars
Psalm 12:2–4 ESV
2 Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. 3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, 4 those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?”
Psalm 12:2-4
Psalm1
No liar will enter into heaven.
Revelation 21:8 ESV
8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
The Devil is a liar and the father of all lies.
John 8:44 ESV
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
He performs lying wonders in order to deceive men.
2 Thessalonians 2:9 ESV
9 The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,
False Teachers Speak with Deceptive Words
Ephesians 4:14 ESV
14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

All Men Are Liars

It’s not a special class of lower men.
It’s not that everything they say is always false, but that they can be characterized as being “not what they profess to be” disconnected from reality.
It defines them!
This Characterizes lost men, liars they are! They may not be bad business men, but when it comes to the one true God, they are lying and deceiving themselves. Refusing to accept the truth that God has put inside of them about the one true God. They are acting like their father the devil.
Romans 3:13 ESV
13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.”
Romans 3:
Romans 1:25 ESV
25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
-The light of Creation and conscience witnesses to men each day about God, and yet they ignore it, they refuse to listen to the truth.
They lie.
They are not in touch with Reality
Psalm 58:3 ESV
3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies.
Psalm 52:3 ESV
3 You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
Psalm 52:

Our Whole Culture is Built on Lies

Ephesians: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary From Lying to Speaking the Truth

Our society today is so dependent on lying that if it suddenly turned to telling the truth our way of life would collapse. If world leaders began speaking only the truth, World War III would certainly ensue. So many lies are piled on other lies, and so many organizations, businesses, economies, social orders, governments, and treaties are built on those lies that the world system would disintegrate if lying suddenly ceased. Resentment and animosity would know no bounds, and the confusion would be unimaginable.

This Changes at Conversion

Coming to Christ is coming to the truth. It’s finally accepting what is right and real and true.
Christianity is based on Truth, i.e., what is right and according to reality, the true God, the true way of worship, and the true nature of men.
We don’t live according to superstitions and inventions but understand we live understanding who the true God is and what he declares to be true.
We are not disconnected from reality, we are actually living according to the way things actually are.

Why I Can’t Lie Anymore

The reason Paul gives for believers not lying.
“Members One Of Another”

It’s Inconsistent with who you are.

You have been brought out of the domain of falsehood and into the domain of truth.

It’s hurtful to the body of Christ, and Christ.

Paul is showing how we can practically live in Unity and Love in Christ’s Body.
Deception hinders, hurts the body of Christ, weakens her witness, stresses her unity.
Ephesians: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary From Lying to Speaking the Truth

Our physical bodies cannot not function properly or safely if each member does not correctly communicate to the others. If our brain were suddenly to start giving false signals to our feet, we would stumble or walk in front of a moving truck instead of stopping on the curb. If it falsely reported hot and cold, we could freeze to death because we felt too warm or be scalded in a hot shower while feeling chilly. If our eyes decided to send false signals to the brain, a dangerous curve in the highway might appear straight and safe, and we would crash. If the nerves in our hands and feet failed to tell our brain that injury was occurring, our foot could be mangled or our fingers burned without our knowing it. That is precisely the great danger of leprosy—injuries, disease, and other afflictions devastate the body because nerves fail to send danger signals of pain.

The church cannot function properly if its members shade the truth with one another or fail to work together honestly and lovingly. We cannot effectively minister to each other or with each other if we do not speak “the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15), especially among our fellow believers.

If you struggle with it

Put it Off!
“having put away”
If you are a believer, you can! It’s not who you are anymore.
Acts 7:58 ESV
58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

Christians Practice Telling the Truth

Put it Off
“Speak truth with his neighbor”
You can, if you are a Christian.
I am called to pursue this as a habit of my life.
-This Doesn’t Mean Telling the all the truth I possibly can. Qualified by what’s edifying.
Don’t make promises unless you are sure you can keep them. (I’ll pray for you) (I’ll play with you, to my kids)
When explaining things, only seek to represent details as they truly are.
3. Seek to be honesty and true in your business dealings. No cheating in school, if you work for someone else don’t cut corners, don’t lie on you income tax forms.
4. Seek to be true in you relationships. Keep confidence with people who confide in you. Don’t flatter people to puff them up. If you can’t say anything nice, just don’t say anything.
5. Don’t make up excuses. If you cannot do what someone asks, just say you can’t do it, and leave it there at the least.
