Intro: We’re not worthy! and they bow in his presence. This act of worship and adoration comes when we acknowledge someone their worth and seek to exalt them. You know worship is to tell another’s worth and therefore make them worth more and you worth less. You decrease and the other increase. You want more of other and less of you.

Who is worthy?

Revelation 5:1-3
Revelation 5:1–3 NLT
1 Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one who was sitting on the throne. There was writing on the inside and the outside of the scroll, and it was sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a strong angel, who shouted with a loud voice: “Who is worthy to break the seals on this scroll and open it?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll and read it.
The setting of chapter five is the same as chapter 4.
Who is sitting on the throne?
Who are mention to be standing around the throne?
Revelation 4:1 NLT
1 Then as I looked, I saw a door standing open in heaven, and the same voice I had heard before spoke to me like a trumpet blast. The voice said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this.”
Revelation 4:5–6 NLT
5 From the throne came flashes of lightning and the rumble of thunder. And in front of the throne were seven torches with burning flames. This is the sevenfold Spirit of God. 6 In front of the throne was a shiny sea of glass, sparkling like crystal. In the center and around the throne were four living beings, each covered with eyes, front and back.
John’s vision has him in the spirit before God on the throne.
The throne room is full of standing beings
Four beast
24 elders
Wonderful and fearful sight to behold.

Who is worthy to open the scroll?

John is in awe of this wonderful sight but notices the shift of focus.
The angel shouts (), “who is worthy to break the seals on this scroll and open it?”
But the revelator could not see anyone who was worthy ()
Know one was worthy in:
In heaven
On earth
Under earth

When there is no one to help we feel hopeless.

Revelation 5:4 NLT
4 Then I began to weep bitterly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll and read it.
Revelation 5:4
John could not see who was worthy.
Grief seems to overwhelm him immediately.
He is broken feeling hopless

Hope is present!

Revelation 5:5 NLT
5 But one of the twenty-four elders said to me, “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
revelation 5:5
We have hope in Jesus,
Lion of the tribe of Judah
The heir to David’s throne
He has won the victory

Jesus is qualified to open the scroll and its seven seals.

He is worthy because of his identity.
He is the Messiah and heir to David’s throne.
He is also the Son of God how has defeated death and given us the victory over death.

Jesus is worthy!

Only Jesus could redeem us and save us from our sins.
He is the one that fulfills the scriptures and our salvation.
God’s plan for us came to fruition as he worked through history for our eternal salvation.

Jesus imagery and our worship.

Jesus the lamb that was slain. (imagery)

Revelation 5:6-
Revelation 5:6–14 NLT
6 Then I saw a Lamb that looked as if it had been slaughtered, but it was now standing between the throne and the four living beings and among the twenty-four elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which represent the sevenfold Spirit of God that is sent out into every part of the earth. 7 He stepped forward and took the scroll from the right hand of the one sitting on the throne. 8 And when he took the scroll, the four living beings and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song with these words: “You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10 And you have caused them to become a Kingdom of priests for our God. And they will reign on the earth.” 11 Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders. 12 And they sang in a mighty chorus: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered— to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.” 13 And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.” 14 And the four living beings said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped the Lamb.
Isaiah 53:7
Isaiah 53:11 NLT
11 When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.
Isaiah 53:7 NLT
7 He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.
Jesus is the lamb of God!
This lamb is powerful - 7 horns!
The lamb is omniscient and omnipresent - 7 eyes.
The lamb is omniscient and omnipresent - 7 eyes.
This lamb is equivalent with God - 7 spirits.

Jesus work deserves our worship

They sing 3 hymns in worship to the Lamb and the one who sits on the throne.

(first hymn of the Lamb sung by the 24 and Four!)
Worthy to take the scroll
Worthy to break the seal and open it.
You were slaughtered/slaihn
Your blood was ransom for the people of God!
Every tribe,
language,
people, and nation
Your saving power has set them apart to be:
Kingdom of priest for God!
They will reign on the earth!
Revelation 5:8–9 NLT
8 And when he took the scroll, the four living beings and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song with these words: “You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.
Revelation 5:8
The presence of the powerful lamb demanded worship.
The same who were worshipping the one on the throne also worship the lamb.
They fall down before the Lamb.
They sang a new song!
The Lyrics of the Song speak of the work of the Lamb! (Rev. 5:9-10)
You were slaughtered/slain
The Lamb blood ransomed/purchased all people for God.
The Lamb has elevated the saints (all who call on the Lord) to become a Kingdom of priest for God
We Will reign on earth

Worship in his presence will not stop!

Second Hymn is by millions of angels along with the elders and the four living beings!

Revelation 5:11 NLT
11 Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders.
Revelation 5:11

Heaven worships the Lamb!

Revelation 5:12 NLT
12 And they sang in a mighty chorus: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered— to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.”
They are worshipping the Lord in heaven.
They echo the same worship of the 24 elders and four beings.
They worship the Lamb in this hymn:
Who is worthy because he was slaughtered
Who has recieved Power and riches
Who has wisdom and strength (eyes and horns)
Doxology: honor and glory and blessing
The reason for worship is similar from the previous hymn!
The lamb is worthy because what he has done.
He is worthy to be worship because he is God!

Let us worship the Lamb on earth!

The third hymn is by all living beings on earth and under the earth join in with all in heaven!

All will know that Jesus is Lord!
His exaltation was for the glory of God for all to know!
Revelation 5:13–14 NLT
13 And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.” 14 And the four living beings said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped the Lamb.
Let us worship the Lamb of God, our Lord who will reign forever and ever.
They worship the Lamb by saying:
Blessings
Honor
We
Glory
Power
Our Worship on earth should be reflected in heaven.

Conclusion:

We are to worship the Lord our God for who he is.
We are to praise him for what he has done!
