How we can see great things happen at Pine Grove.
Intro:
I. We have to have faith in Jesus. VS 1
I. We have to have faith in Jesus. VS 1
1 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.
1 Jesus went out from there and came into His hometown; and His disciples followed Him.
Own county (Home town)
Jesus had left Capernaum (head quarters) now He is in Nazareth, His hometown, the place where He grew up.
a. He here been back there one other time, right the 40 days in the wilderness (Temptation)
b. He teaching in the Synagogue, () reads and teaches from a passage about the Messiah. He tells them ‘
:
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
Having declared himself as the Messiah they grab Jesus and take Him to throw Him off a cliff.
40 While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them.
30 But passing through their midst, He went His way.
c. Now He is back.
d. There were those who opposed Jesus. The religious leaders, some of the people.
e. Those who followed Jesus. The 12, but many others. Here in the VS “his disciples” are talking about the 12.
f. Even though the first time Jesus came to Nazareth they tried to killed Him, there some who believed.
e. Jesus going back to the place where He was rejected, this shows the patience of God. God is patient with you and me. How often is He calling us to do His will and we either put it off, or just don’t do it at all?
f. He is patient with PGBC. We haven’t been doing as much as we should to reach our community.
g. If we get serious about following Him, He will give us the opportunities to reach people.
h. But we have to be willing.
i. We have to understand what it means to follow Jesus.
j. Just before Jesus ascended into heaven, he gave a command to the 11 (Judas Elab)
Matthew 19
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
KJV “Teach all nations” translates, make disciples.
For us that means to make disciples it takes some training. It means learning about Gods word. (Preaching)
(Sunday School) Wednesday night.
a. Evangelism training.
b. Training to reach people in our community.
VS 20 teaching to observe all that i have commanded you
Word observe: To guard, a military fortress. We are too guard all that Jesus has commanded us to.
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
a. Not talking about the 10 Commandments; it means a word spoken. So for us to truly follow Jesus, we have to do as He says.
Prayer, ask God what can we do to reach our community? It member's being involved.
Praying, asking God to send workers needed.
b. This takes time, this takes effort, this takes patience, wisdom, faith.
II. We have to believe in Jesus. VS 2-3
II. We have to believe in Jesus. VS 2-3
II. We have to believe in Jesus. VS 2-3
II. We have to believe in Jesus. VS 2-3
For us to believe, we show our believe by acting oue on what we believe in FAITH.
2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
Mark
2 When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?
Jesus in His home town, teaching in the synagogue he had attended growing up, and as a young adult.
1. Jesus in His home town, teaching in the synagogue he had attended growing up, and as a young adult.
a. There a lot of people there “many” (the majority of the people that heard Him) they were “astonished” (greatly astonished)
Kenneth Wuest (Flabbergasted)
b. Here this man, that grew in their town, didn’t any extended education. School in that time for the Jews was to learn about the scriptures.
Luke
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
c. He was God, but they didn’t get that. And they were blown away by His teaching. They should have been excited to hear His teaching, it was nothing they had ever heard before.
29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
In Capernaum
d. This word authority is speaking of power.
d. This word authority is speaking of power.
e. Their question. Where did He get this? Where did He get this wisdom?
f. Maybe they taught He was t
f. How is He able to do these mighty works? (Miracles) They had seen, and had heard.
g. They didn’t see Him as being any different them themselves.
3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
3 “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him.
1. They didn’t see Jesus for who He really was, they saw Him as the carpenter, Marys son, and a brother. (No mention of Joseph)
And they were offended at Him.
His teaching had great power, because of this power He did mighty works (miracles) but because of who He was, Carpenter, son of Mary (Mary and Joseph, in the eyes of some of them, had a bad reputation) a brother.
a. So they disapproved of Him. The term “were offended at him” speaks of a stumbling block. Their lack of faith caused a stumbling block. They could not explain Him.
b. People today, don’t really believe in Jesus. They may believe something about Jesus, but haven’t put their faith in Him.
2. Do we really want to see PGBC grow? Do we really want to reach our community? Do we really believe that it can be done?
a. We have to believe, have to have faith, we have to put all that into action.
Mark Minch: knowledge; conviction; anguish (be extremely distressed about something.)
b. It takes people who believe who are willing to put it into action.
III. We have to honor Jesus VS 4
III. We have to honor Jesus VS 4
4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.”
When we were in and Jesus own family came to bring Him home.
21 When His own people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, “He has lost His senses.”
Jesus’ own family, own town people would not believe in Him.
a. Here is the problem, their were “small minded”. The local boy had made a great impact everywhere He went, but still would not accept the fact that Jesus was the Messiah.
b. To them He was just a good ole boy from Nazareth.
2. If we want to see PGBC grow/reach our community, we have to follow, believe and honor.
a. Jesus has to be real to us. We know of His saving power, His saving power is a changing power. He will change the lives of the ones take put their faith in Him.
b. This means through salvation.
c. This means the Christian that wants to do more, who wants to do what Jesus has called us to do. So do we honor Him? Great by to honor Him is by worshipping Him.
Worship here at church by Singing, prayer, giving.
Worship Him by obeying Him. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments”
Worship Him doing whatever He leads us to do.
d. If we don’t do these things, we will just fade away.
e. We have to believe that we can do all things through Jesus, we can’t be small minded.
IV. The results of not believing. VS 5-6
IV. The results of not believing. VS 5-6
5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.
5 And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
This unbelief, this lack of faith, it was more then a lack of faith, it was no faith at all. This hindered Jesus’ work.
a. Jesus only healed a few people. People that believed.
2. If we do not faith faith, if we do not believe, if we do not put our faith into action, He will not do mighty works.
a. It doesn’t mean He will do nothing. Jesus will always work with a few.
b. What do we do?
1st Prayer:
Plan
Work the plan
Bro Gene “Plan your work, work your plan”
c. For the people pf Nazareth, it He can’t because who He is.
d. For PGBC, it can’t be. we can’t because of who we are. It has to be, we can because of who He is.
6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.
6 And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.
He was amazed at their unbelief, their lack of faith.
a. Jesus was
a. If we don’t step out on faith and start doing ministry to reach our community, Jesus will look at us the same way. I don’t want that.
a. Giving the NCFBA is one step, but we need to do more stepping out on faith.
b. For the town of Nazareth, Jesus left there and went on to other places.
c. We know that God can be all places that the same time, and He will never leave us or forsake us. But He will not do mighty works if we do not believe and if we do not put our beliefs into action.
