NOT A SETBACK, BUT A SETUP
Read
So Jesus shows up on the scene and a crowd is there waiting for him.
Among these crowd members is
Jairus
the text highlights that he is desperately pleading with jesus to come to his home for his daughter is sick to the point of death.
tells us also an important point about Jairus-that he is ruler of the synagogue
The synagogue was a place for Jewish people to come worship, pray, read scripture, and have scripture explained.aka
church
the ruler of the synagogue was an official of the church who was responsible for making sure the physical needs of the synagogue were met.
The reason this is note worthy is that it adds significance to the fact that Jairus was there with jesus at all
it shows his desperation
he was very well established in his church YET when his need about his daughter came up for what ever reason, suddenly all he knew was not enough.
Why didn't he go to the synagogue and pray for her? why didn't he have one of the other synagogue leaders or priests pray for her?
based on his title he should have gone to the synagogue for his need.
it would be like pastor bates getting sick and not coming to church to pray about it but looking elsewhere.
He basically with his action was acknowledging that what I have practiced and what i know is not enough for this need
and this need is too great for me to stay with what isn't meeting it.
I need someone who is known to heal.
Whether he was fully doubting his synagogue or just in this moment looking outside of it, his actions were still saying alot.
The community would have known his position in the church.
they would have noticed this impact of his action.
that his actions were saying-there is something about this man jesus
this thought/action could very likely of cost him his position within the church.
but his need became > than what his title was, what he had access to , and to what he had believed.
So this is where we find Jairus…desperately pleading for jesus to come heal is daughter risking everything in the process.
jesus responds.read
so Jairus risked it all -all he knew, his position, his authority, his reputation, for his only daughter
and so Jesus said yes
they are going to go get to her soon.he
wont loose her after all.
she is going to be healed.
im sure at this point a flood of emotions were washing over Jairus: the risk is starting to give way to confidence, anxiety somewhat reducing because step one is done.
we are moving closer to her. to frustration as this crowd throngs/surrounds jesus.
“ dont they see i talked to him first?
He as a job to do.
come on move it.
get out of our way.
time is of the essence!” “ could he do a part the red sea moment” “lets go” “was this all for nothing” “will we even make it in time”
but all of the sudden something happens
mark 5:25-
mark 5:29-
mark 5:31-
mark 5:34
jairus had risked everything! he found jesus, he got him to say yes, he got them to press through the crowd and now his hope was INTERRUPTED
could you imagine his frustration?
“come on I called dibs”
“Jesus what are you doing?” “who cares who touched you!
EVERYBODY touched you! we are surrounded by this annoying crowd!”
“hey hey hey, remember my daughter is dying?
this is important.
lets go!”
but Jesus stops. he notices the touch.it
wasn't a BUMP it was a TOUCH.
an INTENTIONAL TOUCH
not only did he notice the touch but he noticed healing power flowing from him to this person who touched him
and so he stopped
now imagine your this woman
you don't know Jairus.
You didn't see him talking to Jesus.
You spotted Jesus walking in the crowd.
All you knew was this was your last shot.
it has been 12 years.
12 years of constant bleeding that no one can fix
but you have heard about a man named jesus who does what others cant.he is your last hope.so
this is your moment.you
have to take it
it has cost you everything so you aren't going to waste you chance
and literally it cost her everything
someone who bleed was considered unclean which was a huge negative title in this day.
if you were unclean that means you had to by levitical law be placed in isolation because if anyone touched you or anything you touched they were considered unclean.
so this is 12 years of not getting to go to the synagogue, not getting to live with others who weren't bearing this label.
12 years of everyone knowing the worst thing about you.12 years of people being disgusted by you.
12 years of trying everything to become clean.
12 years of drs visits.12
years of procedures to stop the bleeding but it didn't help but actually made it worse.
12 years of paying for these unsuccessful Dr visits.
so her showing up this day was not by chance.it
was sought out. it was everything!
she was desperate-out of $, out of time, out of emotions.
she put herself in a position where she was not supposed to be and did what she was not supposed to do out of hope filled desperation.
her need became > then what the levitical law said or what man could do for or to her
but this time her need was met
mark 5:29 says immediately her bleeding stopped and she KNEW she was healed.
and then Jesus RESPONDED to her touch.
this is when reality of what was risked sets in.
“O no!
I broke the law!
I touched him
verse 32 says she said with fear and trembling the WHOLE TRUTH
but Jesus response was love. he said “daughter you faith has made you whole.”
this woman was PHYSICALLY sick, ALONE physically, EMOTIONALLY isolated, RELIGIOUSLY isolated, FINANCIALLY spent, full of DISAPPOINTMENT from failed attempts
BUT one touch from JESUS and
she gained healing, hope resotred, no longer required to be isolated, and a new title-DAUGHTER=acceptance
jairus had done his part! he had found jesus. he had found the answer
and this LADY cut in line!
and now.....its too late.
she’s dead
could you imagine the feelings that washed over him in hearing this news and even before this news.
“alright Jesus we are almost there.”
